News Chapter Four - Exploration Reveal

"The system scan now returns an aggregated display of how energetic the electromagnetic emissions are in the system. Signals are sorted on a low to high scale by their apparent energy. For example, emissions from rocky clusters will appear at the lower end of the scale, hot gas giants at the upper range. This information requires some interpretation as signals can overlap."

Im sold.......bringing engaging science/trial and error into it? Come on Q4

Hi Will!

To help us understand what these changes will mean to planning and participating in expeditions, could you and Ed demonstrate a short exploration run of about 20 systems?
So we can see how long this new system takes to scan, assess, survey and move on.

I'm worried that even a short expedition will take almost forever to complete!

This reads as if the scanner modules will stay in optional internals and not be moved over to utility slots?

Probably. But my hope is they will at least allow the discovery and detailed scanner to be doubled up in the same slot (class 2 or 3) or add an optional Class 2 size scanner that does both. Something to improve the current space limiting situation.

Also, what do you mean by "reduce flying time" are we getting a higher Supercruise acceleration rate, or is this just a colourful way of saying "reduced time because you're not going somewhere you don't want to go"?

Of course. And that's the point of exploration: outside the bubble you'll ave to rely on the new gameplay loops and your skills using them.

Which will be ooo so fun in a system with 100+ bodies. It sounds like "Exploration already takes forever...Let's make it take longer."

3 questions :
- What will be the engineer change for surface scanner
- Will we need discoveries scanner for USS ? If yes, what about thargoid hunter ? (one rack less could be dangerous)
- new holo-me content ?

Hi Whitmann, we don't have our synthesis recipe nailed down at the moment. We are currently working with a ship's holding around a couple of hundred probes. It's important to note that scanning a planet varies based on size of the body and aiming skills of the pilot.

If you run out of probes, and can't synthesis more, will you still be able to perform a planetary scan? I'm assuming you'll just need to get close like today, and probably orbit to get the far side.

USS will continue to spawn at set intervals, each one has a timer as well which denotes when it will expire.

We are considering upgrading all discovery scanners into a single discovery scanner and removing the lesser versions from the game. Those players who have already purchased scanners above the basic level would receive compensation.

Adam i think this makes sense, as the current levels of scanner are a potential hindrance to core gameplay for new players, until they have made a few million and can afford the advanced scanners. Granted its far easier to earn this money when the game launched. I remember it being somewhat memorable to afford the Advanced discovery scanner.

I see what you did there. Nice one Penny. :D

Will

Thanks for the news. Sounds exciting.

Question: Will Cmdrs be credited with first discoveries of Sites (Thargoid, Guardian...) as well as Geological (Volcanics, Brain Trees, Bark Mounds ...)?

It is way more than I expected to be honest. And I expected a lot.

Also there's not even CODEX yet.

Holy cow.

I am impressed.

As for changes - some will be painful for people who are used to honk in these years, but I applaud for FD having balls going all in. I was slightly worried how it will all mesh but it seems you have complete redesign of whole system. It will be a bit cold turkey for some of players, but good. It will be good for long term of the game.

This sounds like a thought out overhaul for exploration, I like it. Though does the ADS directly opens the new UI once the system scan is complete? For those of us that just travel to MAIA and aim to get a quick-scan of every system on the way for the L2 scans, the UI would probably annoy us tremendously. Hopefully there will be a method to keep the new UI closed during travel times compared to actual exploring trips.
