News Chapter Four - Exploration Reveal

Since most of the ships were designed before the fsd booster, maybe these chances are an opportunity to fuse both scanners into one, so we can free one slot - great on smaller ships mostly!

I agree, discovery scanner on top of the surface scanner seems pretty redundant now.

Which will presumably take for ever.

I love the idea but, given that every new mechanic produces added grind, was also trying to figure out where such added grind was in this new mechanic.

Unfortunately, now I know.

We'll probably need more racks for hardware as well. Right now, the ASPx is pushed to its limits in terms of module space. Any chance of a few more slots?

We asked for more engaging exploration so of course it was going to add more steps to the 2 step process we have now. I believe Adam said it will be more rewarding for the time, could be interpreting wrong.

"Because explorers ply their trade far from civilized space, we’ve decided to not add new module requirements" No new module requirements.

Maybe a few hints could be thrown in, such as approximate size and maybe a representation of the star's CHZ (I know you can work that out from the data, but I want to play a game not do an astrophysics PhD).

Oy, I resemble that remark! :D

Part of why I picked up the game in the first place, I realized I could go visit a nebula I wrote about in my dissertation. Been exploring ever since.

And will the current three different varieties (I think there are three) of Discovery Scanner still exist, or will they all do exactly the same? At the moment they have different ranges.

Afaik Adam said - look in his previous answers in elitedevtracker.com - that they thinking about merging it into one device and refunding those who have bought multiple ones.

If we are lucky, FDEV may add slots to our ships. As in Exploration slots. They did mention this when combined module racks were being thought about, but it would still be a good idea. ....I think.

Flimley

Yeah, Adam though confirmed they haven't done combined racks yet, but let's hope they come at some point in future, because it is getting extremely crowded now in drone space :)

Question on the naming.

The computer provides automatic names to the planets right? How does the computer know that this is the THIRD planet in the system if it's the only one discovered? How the computer knows that there are other 2 if these are undiscovered? This is potentially immersion breaking

I'm picking up this picture as an example because I guess this will happen everywhere.

I guess it was only a matter of time... [zZzZz]

And Ouberos says, I hope the planetary sounds are still useable, they're great.
Will they be incorporated in the new scanner mechanics?

And another question, how will scanning the asteroid clusters work? (If it's the same as planetary bodies that could get very tedious given their number.)

travel visually in the galaxy?

Will it be possible to travel visually in the galaxy?
that is, choose the star by pointing it without looking for it in the list.

in short, like Kirk: Second star on the right and then straight, until the morning!

Adam said they're balancing the range and removing the lower 2 scanners.

Does that mean without the Nav Becon, you won't be able to use the ADS to actually find Proxima Centauri then? Currently the ADS has infinite range, while the BDS and IDS have a much reduced range. If they're giving the ADS a limited range, what are they limiting it to? Some systems can be quite big.

I can assure you it works in VR. Question remains - how good it will work. But it will work.

As much as I enjoy your posts, and your emphatic optimism, you don't actually 'know' this. You know no more than any of the rest of us here, so unfortunately your assurance comes across as a little hollow.

Sorry dude, don't want that to sound as harsh as it does, and I hope you're correct.

So keep up the optimistic postings, they are refreshing, most of the time.

:)

Well, that isn't a new problem, and until now we all just ignored it and pretended it didn't happen. You also don't notice when using the ADS, but the DS and IDS have limited range so you might end up finding planet 3 first, showns as planet 3...

I like that discovery scanner now doesn't automatically show all system bodies. Yes, scanning will be much more time consuming, but i think its good that some thing need more work. Makes galaxy more mystery.

Makes discovering things more difficult, but that means discoveries are more rewarding (and i don't mean credits).

I suspect that very few will agree with the above. I would ask FD to ensure that the discovery mechanism does not take for ever.

Imagine having to do this in 200 systems for * sake.
