Astronomy / Space Russian Space Agency to NASA: Investigation Into Space Station Leak Is Under Way

The report on this last week had the Russians (Roscosmos space agency) saying:

'Dmitry Rogozin said the hole detected last Thursday in a Russian Soyuz module docked at the ISS was caused by a drill and could have been done deliberately, either back on Earth or by someone in orbit.

“There were several attempts at drilling,” Rogozin said late on Monday in televised comments, adding that the drill appeared to have been held by a “wavering hand”.

“What is this: a production defect or some premeditated actions?” he asked. “We are checking the Earth version. But there is another version that we do not rule out: deliberate interference in space.”

Made me chuckle at the time, wondering if the Thargoids had invented time travel and were after Jameson's ancestor. ;)

By the way - here is the hole:

There is definitely a 'cold war' vibe to a lot of actions from Russia recently, and this would be the first (i think) that aimed to get in the way of international space co-operation :(

The ISS is Babylon 4!

A little more 'news' on this subject:

'After more speculation about cause of ISS leak, NASA issues another statement':

https://arstechnica.com/science/201...n-iss-leak-investigation-cites-no-mal-intent/

A thorough Russian investigation of a leak that occurred in August in the orbital module of a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, which is attached to the International Space Station, will not be completed until November. But this week, the head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos reignited controversy about the leak with some comments during a television appearance.

A preliminary investigation, according to Russia's chief spaceflight official, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, "concluded that a manufacturing defect had been ruled out which is important to establish the truth." So if it wasn't a manufacturing defect, then what was it? As Rogozin did not say, this re-fueled speculation in some media reports that the hole was intentionally drilled by NASA astronauts in space. This theory is nonsensical, but it appears to play well to Russian audiences.

the plot thickens?

Looks like a bullet hole so possibly micro-meteorite; however those burr marks look like it was s drill.

I don't think it could be a micrometeorite. First - it's an exit hole (it's curved outwards) so there would have to be an entry hole.
And second - most MMs don't go all the way through but vaporize on impact so there wouldn't be an exit hole at all.

It's a really interesting mystery. I wonder if the astronauts looking at each other with suspicion. It's a "locked room murder" mystery, Christie-style. :D

How do they know the hole is there to let the air out? Maybe it was done to let the air back in again?

Dun... dun... .dunnnnnnnnn.

One of the astronauts wanted to make the whole crew "one with the universe"?
That would be some scary Event Horizon stuff.
