CQC Initial Impressions of CQC

Sooooo, I was part of the Gnosis debacle, got caught in the bait and switch and now sit there wondering if I can be bothered to play the game or not. While I am figuring that out, and not playing Project Cars 2, and while I am waiting to see if the Gnosis gets to jump anywhere interesting any time soon, I thought I would revisit CQC.

I say revisit because last time I tried this area of Elite Dangerous there was no one playing and so, without any NPC option, I couldn't actually try it out. However, today (Sunday) I thought I would give it a go and lo' there were two people waiting for a game. Two! Out of everyone that could be playing at a weekend. Anyway, that aside, in I dived.

The two players in my first session were both level 30 players, to my level 1. I thought it was a bit strange that the game hookup system would match me with players 30 levels higher than me, but I think the server might not have an actual option, in that, we were the only ones playing, so it was a case of suck it up...

Initial impressions are of a rapid-fire play environment, built for speed junkies and thrill seekers. When in a combat situation, either taking fire or dishing it out, battles that spin and weave between the beautifully crafted structures are awe-inspiring. At least they were for my fresh eyes. And, disclaimer, I play in VR, which tends to make even the craziest game look cool.

But anyway, battle was fought, and after a while, we dropped to just two of us, which considering the level difference, was not a lot of fun for me, constantly getting blown up by a higher level player. I stuck with it to get the XP Points (you see FD, you can do experience related stuff!), and had a bit of a laugh playing hide and seek with the other guy. For a while.

Logged eventually, when I got bored of being blown up a lot, and when the maps had rotated through all that there were (four I think). I did come back to it later, but again, only two other players, and one of those soon went, leaving me, now a lofty level 2, up against yet another level 30 player. Maybe that's the level peak?

Again, it was fun, for a while, and I can see that if there are four or five players in a free for all deathmatch, it would be enormous fun. Team deathmatch sounds loads of fun, but not really do-able with only two people on the CQC server.

So, overall, a bit of a laugh, something different in Elite Dangerous, but so woefully underused that it's basically just going to entertain those that have already got level 30 and like blowing up curious level 1 players venturing into this area for the first time.

Without NPC ships, or the option of including them to fill the empty spaces, CQC is really looking a little like an FD developers vanity project. A pity, as it does seem as though it has a lot of potential.

I will give it a few more goes, while I wait to see if the Gnosis actually goes anywhere, or if the new patch brings anything of interest to do, but if I am going to constantly find only one or two players, I cannot see this having any long-term attraction for me.

The maximum rank is 50, and that can be repeated 8 times (various yellow rank icons) for a theoretical maximum of 450. (And that gets you about 2/3 of the way to CQC Elite). The majority of players are rank 30 or less, though.

The matchmaker does have skill [1] separation, but as you've guessed, it only works if there are a lot more players on. It prioritises "there's a match at all" over "there's an even match"

They recently (3.1) dropped the minimum player requirement for Deathmatch from 4 to 2 (and for Team from 6 to 4) - this makes it much easier to get a match at all, but yes, does mean that if it's running with the minimum and not attracting more players, it can be extremely uneven. It's not so bad being a level 1 in a match with six level 30s - you'll still die a lot, but you also have a good chance to steal a bunch of kills. TDM in that situation ... on the one hand, you're probably the easiest target ... on the other hand, at least your teammates can rescue you.

We have an community server at https://discord.me/elitedangerouscqc - contains almost all the regular PC players, and has some PS4 and XBox players as well. People often use that to organise TDM groups.

[1] Rank has very little to do with skill, other than "you'll probably get better if you practice". An experienced main-game PvPer can come in and be beating almost everyone up at rank 1 ... I've seen the occasional rank 50+ players who still fly like beginners.

It can be very hit or miss (especially at first) in terms of number and "quality" of players, but you should be able to easily spot daily patterns with just a bit of perseverance - as in slow and busy hours.

As far as getting blown up a lot goes, it just comes down to your playstyle, you can learn to avoid it or just embrace it. Many experienced players are adept at engaging with minimum risk to themselves and making their escape when things get uncomfortable, like clever soldiers should. You can learn a lot from being their victim. Or you can be like me, fly like the village idiot and enjoy free-of-charge permadeath :) Whatever, just play for a while, it will get easier, and you'll know you're doing it right if you're having fun.

The maximum rank is 50. . .

I haven't been around for a while, but I'm totally down to check out that Discord group. Thanks for the post, Ian Doncaster. And to Wordsmith, I completely agree with what Doncaster has said, ranks do not equal skill like most experience based ranking systems go. Just like Call of Duty games, if you're familiar with the franchise, a higher rank just means more toys to play with. It looks like there are much more people interested in CQC now than when I first started playing, or maybe now they're just more organized and visible since I've come out from underneath my rock xD

I am far from the first to say this, but if we could queue for matches from within the main game, and they added some substantial main game rewards for investing in the arena, it could see new life breathed into it.

Been a dead feature to me for some time. Must be my play time because when I que up I almost never get a match.

I had been wondering if anyone was playing in the arena. I am on Xbox and have tried it a couple of times and had no luck getting a match. Once though (pre-update) I was in queue for TDM and saw one other pop in. Seems like if could be fun .... if I ever get a chance to play

I realise that this is not what people are after in this thread, and I know that I am being wildly optimistic here, but I don't suppose there's any way to remove reference to CQC from the main game window, is there? I don't know what CQC is, have no interest in adding another bit of gameplay to Elite, don't do any multiplayer bits (yes, other than being online when running the game), but my kids keep asking questions to the effect of 'why are you rubbish at CQC?' as they see my ranks progressing at other bits of Elite but CQC remaining rooted at 'rubbish' as I have never fired it up.
