Now I know it has iconic status in the game and some might think that what I'm about to say is heresy, but I don't love the Cobra anymore.
Back in Alpha it was the only upgrade from the trusty Sidewinder and I loved it. In Premium Beta it was the pick of the bunch as the Lakon and Anaconda felt too unwieldy and all of the smaller ships were flawed in some way. The Hauler was almost defenceless and the Eagle was a glass cannon. I still loved the Cobra. It's speed was unsurpassed and it seemed a good compromise on cargo capacity , firepower and agility.
Then Standard Beta happened. Two ships made me re-evaluate my feelings. The scales fell from my eyes and I could see that the Cobra was flawed Those idiosyncrasies that had initially seemed cute now grated. I no longer loved the Cobra.
It started with the Viper. Sure she was a good looking ship in a way that the Cobra couldn't really compete, but looks aren't everything. It was only meant to be a brief Beta fling, try the Viper, see how she flew and then move on. I wasn't expecting much. As soon as I took off, something clicked. It just felt so right. The Viper felt balance and poised in a way that the Cobra didn't and then there was the extra speed. The Cobra is like the stereotypical American 'muscle car', good straight line speed but lousy handling, the Viper is more like an Aston Martin or Jaguar, faster and more nimble. I was hooked. The Viper stole my heart, fun to fly and so capable, the only thing the Cobra had going for it was cargo space...
Then I tried the Lakon Type 6. I feared the worst, having flown her big sister, but was pleasantly surprised. The handling was ok, much like the hauler, but the real surprise was how small she felt for a ship carrying 100 tonnes. Docking was a breeze compared to the Cobra. However the thing that blew my away was the jump range.
Suddenly it became clear what the problem was. The multi-role nature of the Cobra was the issue. It's a jack of all trades and master of none. Whatever role you're using it for you'll find that compromises have been made. There is always a better choice. The other thing is that the Cobra is so damn wide, only the Type 9 and the Anaconda are wider.
