I played Elite Dangerous on Xbox for the first time in twenty days...

...It's put me off consoles.

Everything feels cheap and nasty, the colours are horrible, LoD is crap, texture quality truly disgusting...

And don't get me started on the frame rate.

Coming back to PC gaming has really opened my eyes.

The Xbox platform is terribly limited, borderline draconic in saying what you can or cannot do. Everything is forced onto a gamepad alone, which whilst is fine for a lot of games, is terrible for the other half of gaming. We on PC get choice in how we play, with the options being so huge that I could write an essay on this topic alone.

Consoles can shut up about exclusives. For one most new Xbox exclusives are actually for all Windows platforms, and the PS4 titles? Eh'. I got ARMA 3.

Oh, and on PC we don't need "support" for old games. When we want to play a game from 2002 on our 2018-built system, we don't beg Microsoft to allow us the chance, (which we then have to pay for again), no us PC gamers can go to the old disk, stick it in the drive and boom, it's 2002 again.

We don't have to pay for multiplayer in most cases, and the games we do have to subscribe for are genuinely huge. WoW for example. Voice chat is totally free. Yes, you have to pay for VC on Xbox.

There's a reason most eSports are held on PC. It's just a better platform. It's more engaging.

Ironically, this post has been written on my Xbox. As soon as I've had dinner I'm back on PC, with a real mouse and keyboard, plus a great quality joystick, headset and yes, an Xbox controller because I have the choice.

Bring on my next graphics card, and forget consoles. PC for life.

I want to state that I do think consoles have a place.

One thing is undeniable: In raw financial terms, consoles are just cheaper no matter how you spin it. This is a good thing.

But I think that if you consider games a real hobby, on the same level as drone pilots or car enthusiasts, then you absolutely should be on PC.

Xbox is terrible
That's why it doesn't sell. They had one good run with the 360, because the competition f'ed up. The Japanese platforms have their merits, especially for single player games sold on physical media (which are not economically viable on PC). But Xbox doesn't feature any of these advantages, and offer an even worse experience for those outside of the US market. It's a me too product by a business software company so DirectX doesn't become completely irrelevant. Needless to say that they also invented the gift of multiplayer subscriptions (which they also tried on PC for a short time), which now the whole industry happily picked up. Thank you, Bill Gates!

Basically.

I had been thinking if I'll ever buy another console.

After today though I think I can safely say it's PC only for me in the future.

You should see PUBG on Xbox. They just do not care about quality anymore. (There was quality on the 360, at least. Forza was a work of art on that system)

But yeah. No more consoles for me. When my Xbox One dies, I'm done with consoles for life.

I hate Xbox

...Oh how you are right about everything, and word it so eloquently, now I am convinced to throw my XBox out of the window and join the PC Master Race. Maybe all consoles should burn in hell!

Yes, yes, stupid stupid machines that have no place in gaming whatsoever.... yuk.... how dare you have a machine that is accessible to the masses, with a 'plug and play' style where you don't need to worry about GPU compatibility or having to have upgraded hardware every few years. let's go on a crusade and burn them all!

... Or how about you calm the frick down and think about your position rather than having an (what I consider) uncontrolled rant about how crappy consoles are compared to PC master race. Consoles have a place.... just like cheaper less able phones have a place alongside more advanced phones.... or how a small car has a place alongside a big car.

Yes consoles do have certain limitations and sometimes the textures can get a bit buggy, pixellated and low res until they pop. Maybe a somewhat limited gamepad for controls but there are many, MANY people quite happy to play this game on their inferior consoles. They are accessible, easy to use and convenient. Live with it.

I dropped console systems a few years back once I realized that the money I was spending on a new top-of-the-line console every few years could've been invested in new hardware(s) for my PC. $300-600 for a new console every 3-5 years is around the price of a new decent GPU, or more/better memory, and/or mobo & CPU, etc. Once I made the upgrades to my PC I found that I was on par or better than a console of that time.

Besides that, consoles are pretty much mod-locked. Meaning, you can't modify the console/firmware without voiding the manufacturer warranty and offer very little in accessories that aren't manufacturer specific. With a PC your skills, imagination and sometimes tech (unless you design your own) are your only limitations. Over the years I've changed out fans, lights, sensors, you name it! I've been able to make my PC with my own mods.

I had 10 years on the Xbox...mostly all of those years wishing I had invested in a new PC as I realised the games I used to play heavily on PC like ARMA and IL2 would never appear on a console.

I enjoyed my time on there, made a lot of friends through the whole social media thing of Xbox live in various games but realised just how fleeting that was when I eagerly jumped on the chance to play E-D on first GPP release for the Xbox which I had been following the development of for some time...but it never had any appeal to the majority of the folks on my Xbox live friends list so the experience left me having to repopulate my friends list with new names.

Once I had sampled E-D on the Xbox and realised the platforms limitations due to Microsoft's lack of vision and seeming intent to have a captive audience due to Xbox live subs, my time remaining on Xbox was limited.

I switched back to PC just over 2 years ago, dragged a few of my new Xbox E-D friends list over with me and got back into ARMA and IL2, saved £40 per year on subs.... there's simply no going back for me now :)

I have nothing against consoles; they fill a market. The only problem I have is when they make games for that low bar and write interfaces for controllers instead of using all the flexibility a PC can have. ED is one of the few games that do it right, though their UI still has console hangover written all over it in places (glares at station services).

I'm entitled to my opinion. It does not have to agree with yours.

Calm the frick down.

After an unconvincing PS4 launch, I decided to buy a PC as I wanted to have a desktop for other stuff as well, and was not disappointed.

I was never a DIY kind of person and 10+ years ago working/installing on PC was a nightmare. Now Win10 is plug&play and we have Steam. PC can still have annoying issues (like stuttering) that isn't hardware driven, but otherwise it is a breeze to use.

However, the mining craze and nVidia's monopoly took a toll on bang for buck - the performance per dollar ratio is stuck since years, and if that won't change, next gen consoles could look better than ever vs. PC - especially if those will feature proper VR functionality.

I am not saying I'll switch back (I recon 7700k/1080ti combo will serve me well for years), but it's something I will leave open.

I'm all in with Xbox - I sit at my PC for at least 9 hours a day, I don't want to spend my free time doing the same. I do agree with 95% of what you said - it's objectively true that PCs are better than consoles - its obvious, so doesn't need to be repeated. Similarly, I don't let the fact that that BMW M3 can out-accelerate my in my wife's DS3, bother me - what else was going to happen!!

I've just never been one to get that bothered with graphics quality - I've been gaming since the late 70s, so every generation is better than the last. But regardless, Elite on the Xbox One X, on my 43" 4K telly is glorious - especially when enjoyed whilst lounging on the sofa... Alternatively, I just don't wear my glasses, then everything looks like it's been rendered with 4x AA !! :)

Did pc gaming fer 20 years before switching to console only...just upgraded the 1s to the 1x over the weekend and an now getting better gaming performance than my last pc could manage.

And fer half the price...obviously it’s never gonna compete with a gaming pc but in terms of cost, console wins with ease. Even a self build pc costs more and I know this fer fact because I always built my own pc in the past...that was one the deciding factors fer changing. As an unemployed and disabled lone parent, I simply don’t have that amount of disposable income...had to save fer past 7 months just to get the oneX and got a new 4K tv cheap from...a source, needs must and all that jazz but however.

The cost of a top end pc could buy me a cheap car or replace my cooker or get my roof professionally repaired instead of doing it meself.

Each to their own end of the day...me I’m a console only gamer nowadays and have zero complaints...I’ve been on the other side of the fence and had numerous issues with pc.

Doesn’t really get any more complicated than that ^

Yup - texture detail is utterly immaterial when you're sitting 10ft away from your display - this is the problem PC users have, in general - they need ultra-high-quality texture rendering because at 2ft with a 23" monitor, the flaws are plain as day.

Actually I was quite calm when posting that reply thank you :) I considered my points before committing them to text, rather than poo-pooing all over the idea of consoles in general. Enjoy your day :)

And HailVectron - I like you because you have the Welsh dragon as your avatar :) and you make good points too!

When its a 4k 55inch screen, texture details look flawless from the other side of the room whilst running at a steady 60fps. Sitting at a desk staring at a tiny 20 something inch oversized tablet just isnt that appealing truth be told. I want a big screen along with the thousand watt sound system I have hooked into it...homemade from cannibalized car sound systems but works like a charm the neighbours can confirm.

Basically Im as happy as a pig in the brown stuff but I did get a giggle on this thread when I read the op then saw the op tell someone else to calm down...ye pot meets kettle haha...

Personally I got nothing against any gamers regardless what platform they choose to play on...or are forced to play on due to not being able to afford a pc. In one single page its clear this ethos does not apply to all...must be a master race thing...meh let them rant and hate lifes too short fer all that immature nonsense ^

Naturally you bypass the bit where I reference a console's merits.

As for me being biased? Well yeah, of course I am. This thread is me voicing my personal journey, going forward in gaming.

Yes, that does mean I will criticise some platforms. If you can't handle opinion that doesn't blindly agree with yours, then I would revise upon the nature of the Internet.

I have made a case against consoles that focuses on hardware/software, and made no personal attacks against anyone.

I even pointed out a merit in favour of consoles.

I can't see what I should do differently, especially when my opinion is backed by technical fact.

Sorry, just how I see it.

'.

That mildly irks me (and I don't irk easily), given my gaming history - using your analogy, it's saying that you can't be a car enthusiast, if your car isn't a Ferrari/Classic/Performance (delete as appropriate) - that's subjective - I can be a very enthusiastic car enthusiast, just because I'm pottering around with an Austin Allegro in my garage. Gaming is about what you get out of it, not what you do it on. That's my take on it anyway.
