Would you mind if bounty hunting involved more than farming NPCs at a RES?

2. FDev already put in smarter combat AI once and people freaked out because it was too hard.

Sorry but it never really happened that way if I remember correctly.

First, that was during 2.1 and FDEV introduced a bug that made some NPCs invincible using multicannon plasma accelerators. It was the famous Skynet AI bug. Some people didn't experience the bug and couldn't understand why others are complaining about the harder AI. That happened after 2.1 went live.

Second, during 2.1 beta several attampts to fine tune the AI have been made and the only real thing that changed drastically was their escape routine. At one point NPCs ran away as soon as their shields dropped and people complained that it's too hard to kill them in slow ships.

1. You could do your hunting in supercruise rather than sitting in a RES. Wanted NPCs spawn there too.

1. Well aware of it. Interdict => Kill. However the payouts are paltry compared to RES and the the NPC still are patsies.
At the moment the only enjoyable BH (for me) is wing assassination missions. Decent payouts + mats + fun + difficulty

2. Yeah :/ That was a sad day indeed. (Non-bugged) modded NPC's made RES spiky. However the plasma chaingun incident tossed it to the bin.

When looking at bounty hunting in RES I just want it gone. That's not bounty hunting but simply waiting for NPC spawns and farming..

I agree with the basic premise, but you can't just take away this gameplay without replacing it with something. These days I go to a HAZRES for two things - to test out new weapon configurations & tactics and to "farm" materials.

So yes, I definitely want to get rid of "farming materials" in this game. It works in a game like ESO, because it's logical to farm plants and animals for materials to make clothing and armor, and if you want to make your own weapons, you can mine iron and other metals. Not only is it logical, it's fun IMO. "Farming" in ED makes no sense at all - need some electronic parts? Blow up spaceships. Uh hu. What is this, Mad Max? Digikey and Mouser are out of business in 3304? And what about common metals - blow up more spaceships! Oops, no, spaceship metal is crap, we need to get our iron and zinc from rocks on the ground. And unlike ESO, where good weapons and armor can be obtained without ever visiting a crafting station, ED requires "crafting" if you want quality weapons and modules!

I bet you didn't plan to open this can of hybrid capacitors, but I'm glad you did :p

They have to be removed because they are silly, unrealistic and because they stand for everything I don't like in this game. I understand that this is purely subjective though.

I disagree.
If the gameplay you describe is added, then you have a choice.
Those who like to do a bit of RES hunting can do so.
Even though I agree that it is a bit silly and unrealistic I do enjoy it myself, especially the HazRes. And this is a game after all. Silly things can still be fun.
You can then simply stay away from it.
But having to really hunt for specific targets, like you described, would be a superior experience of course.

For those who want to keep the current RES mechanics it seems they mostly want some quick pew pew action, which is understandable. Wouldn't it make more sense to add a different system that allows this kind of stuff? Like a tournament arena / The Running Man kind of thing? You could have various scenarios, fight against CMDRs or NPCs, get trophy money, become famous via galnet as best performer, have all sorts of interesting locations, etc. That would still give you some quick pew pew action but at least it makes sense lore wise.

Why change and ruin whats already there and working (bar the combat bit) ??

Why not just add your new stuff elsewhere?

My problem is not with your ideas. My problem is with FDev implementing it... They break everything they touch!

Well I think it's absolutely fine to disagree with me, it's a 100% subjective opinion and I don't think I am right and you are wrong. I'd just prefer if the game would be something different and in the end it's definetely my probem that it isn't. If people like to keep mindless NPC farming that's great, sucks for me though.. ;)
Being optional doesn't do the trick for me since this kind of stuff defines the scope of the game and the player type it attracts. But as said above, that's my problem, not yours.

BTW, you all can blame babelfisch for this thread ;)

NPCs are always going to be mindless. I get that you have Star Citizen dreams of some sort of intelligent simulation (inside of a simulation), but I don't think the reality of such a game is going to be as great as you imagine it will be. You will be disappointed. A little bit of suspension of disbelief and going with the flow goes a long way. If you go hunting in a system and pop in and out of RES, SC and USS, it feels like a lot fuller of an experience hunting pirates even though it is technically possible to just sit in a RES and fight the spawns as they come in.

Elite is a game where you are extremely in control of your subjective experience. That's a big part of what I like about it. There is often an easy way to do it, but that's okay, because every aspect of a game doesn't need a simulation chock full of verisimilitude. Maybe sometime I want to invite my buds in for some multicrew and just want to set us up a HazRES shooting gallery without needing to use three different types of scanners to track pirates for twenty minutes while they sit on their thumbs and spin about.

"Hey, log in, we're ready to go."

Sorry but I don't have Star Citizen dreams. Mount & Blade Warband is 8 years old and it manages perfectly well to simulate all kinds of different persistent or semi persitent characters and parties roaming the world map. This stuff isn't new, it's just something Frontier didn't bother with to implement. Obviously you can't have one big NPC simulation of the entire 400 billion stars galaxy, but limiting it to your current system shouldn't be impossible.

I don't know how that played out in practice because I didn't play it, but I do know that the scale of each game is so different that making the comparison seems ridiculous to me.

You have several hundred parties roaming a big Open world map with a dozen different factions. Trade, economy, conflicts and wars get simulated and happen in real time. All of this can be easily compared to a single star system in Elite.

Where would that simulation happen when you logged out?

I'm not sure that makes more sense to me than the current system.

It certainly feels more detached though. How would it even work, sanctioned deathsport? Or all "virtual" negating rebuy/etc?

I'd love tailored missions that take a while to complete.
I wouldn't even ask for credits, i'd settle for QTY 10 of every single thing related to engineering, (data & mats).
