Hardware & Technical 8gb DDR2 upgrade in an old desktop

I'm laughing at video card prices trying to justify spending the money to put a good one in a $67 desktop. But.... I checked the specs of this motherboard and it can be upgraded to an i7 core processor and it can handle 32gb of memory so I might have stumbled upon a deal here. Been searching out reasonably priced video cards and I think this one is about my max budget: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072J422CZ/?tag=xtremegaminer-20

I have to admit to an aversion to that family of GPU cards, I have been an avid NVIDIA follower for years now so I can't comment on that specific card.

I just wanted to point out yes you might baulk at the idea of spending more money on a better card in a cheaper system, however the card wouldn't take up much space when you emigrate. ;)

Amazing the unrelated things you find while searching for stuff. I had no idea what cryptocurrency mining was and how that was causing video card prices to be high. Also Chinese video cards are on the rise. I watched a video where a computer builder reviewed the Yeston brand of video cards after reviewing some of the "fake" Chinese video cards and had high marks for the Yeston. He said they actually use the same or better quality parts than the card they are cloning. They also have a good reputation on a ton of other things like drones with a complete website for their products. Returns might be an issue. Soooo. there is this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Yeston-NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-1050Ti-4G-D5-7008MHz-128bit-Graphics-Card-/183408114532?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10&&var=690717754793&varId=690717754793 edit: Of course that was just the power adapter and the actual card price is way out of my budget but still considerably cheaper than the name brands

Hotas is on the way. Still looking locally for a video card but the trail is cold. Probably gonna have to have one delivered.

The problem with living in a small town in rural USA. Not much computer support unless you travel for miles to a large city. I either order it online or check the used stuff "craigslist" to see if anything is available. Repairs? nope, I gotta figure it out myself by trial and error or consulting the various forums on technical stuff. Fortunately I'm somewhat computer savvy having been working on/with them since 1976 and back in the dark ages (80286/80386) I had a side business building custom PC's. I was trying to take advantage of the pet rock trend back then and my company name was Pet_pc.

Hot diggity dumplins... my new to me computer and video card arrived today. Now to check the thing out and figure out a power supply upgrade. The hotas shipped yesterday. I picked up a used Thrustmaster T Flight X off of ebay and promptly located some information for it. Found a joystick/throttle modification program where you can tweak the accuracy of your controls so that's cool.. maybe. http://www.xedocproject.com/joystickcurves.html. Found another review of it that shows how to remove that half way detent/stop thing so you can have smooth full reverse to full forward motion on the throttle. And, while the fella had it open I did notice a white rectangular plug and I think that is the wire between the stick and throttle so maybe an extension is in order. I'm sure I can fab one up down in the shop. Watched a video where a fella cut the cord and extended it by soldering some wires between the cut. It worked but wasn't pretty so I know this is a doable thing. I can put together a makeshift control chair out of one of my office chairs and route the wire around the back of it. Been looking for something to help me with keyboard macros and I think that Autohotkey program might do the trick. I don't have a gaming keyboard yet. A simple landing gear up and down and a turn the mouse widget target dot on and off will help greatly I'm sure. Fun stuff for sure.

I now have a nice 600 watt power supply to install. HP being semi-proprietary on some things, the motherboard connections being the big one, I had to order a fancy adapter to make this thing work. Hotas isn't here yet and the ps adapter won't be here till next week as well so we sit... and read... and watch videos. I did switch everything over from the old pc to this new to me pc last night and geeze louise is this thing ever fast.

I'm glad you are enjoying this. Of course the final result of having new better machine is the main goal, but journey is half of the fun. The excitement of when the boxes arrive, the smell of new parts :)

My hotas showed up today and after about 15 minutes of cleaning it looks like brand new. I'm tempted to connect it and run it thru that accuracy program. All that's left is that adapter for the power supply and we're in business. So, as we sit right now my career as a space hero is being stymied by a $14 wire assembly. Gotta love it....

See if you can manage to not use anything other than the game controller calibration for your HOTAS. I have a T-Flight X on my secondary PC and it does not need the TARGET software or any drivers, it runs perfectly well just plug-and-play then run game controller calibration. (I don't like unnecessary stuff running on the computer.)

The new to me pc is officially upgraded. That adapter wiring harness worked like a champ to connect the power supply and the graphics card installed without a hitch. I tried to install ED last night but... silly me, I bought Horizons and it wouldn't install no matter what I tried. So I sent a ticket off to the powers that be and I got my answer this morning, yep, its morning right now over here. I have to purchase the base game first and install that before Horizons can be installed. It was never spelled out anywhere other than a help page I found after searching for answers. I'll go ahead and get the base game this evening when I return home and give that a go and hopefully all goes well and I can install the Horizons expansion without any more problems. If anyone is having issues installing an upgraded power supply in an older HP tower system this is what I had to purchase to make the connections work: https://www.amazon.com/24-Pin-6-Pin-Power-Adapter-Compaq/dp/B01NAHMULC The white connector was the problem and it seems as though new power supply units do not come with this for an HP motherboard. I connected the 24 pin to the harness, the white connector to the board, the 6 pin connector to the board and used the 4 pin connector from the ps and that went to the board as well. Works like a charm now. I did read somewhere that folks were getting some kind of error message about the fan not registering but I didn't have that problem. Fan is working as it should and it seems to be moving more air than the original.

Well apart from the Horizons product page on the store:

I suppose they could have made it flashing colours to make it even more obvious. ;)

Still. well done for not throwing a wobbly about it...

Enjoy...

:)

Yeah, I thought Horizons was Elite Dangerous but I found out it was just the expansion. They were quick enough with the ticket response to address my gap in knowledge for sure and that was a good thing. I'll get it all installed tonight and with any luck I'll be leaving bits and pieces of sidewinders all over the place. Now to figure out these button bindings on the HOTAS.... This is becoming an old dog/new tricks kinda thing.

Rx 550 GPU 50 watts
GtX 1050 GPU 75 watts

The 1050ti is around 70% faster at that extra power premium mind. That means the vanilla 1050 is around 50-60% more powerful too.

Efficiency has to include what said card does with the power it uses and those two cards are by no means directly comparable in that regard. A GTX 1030 on the other hand (GDDR5 model) would be a much better comparison.
