Has anyone tried the Vive Pro with Elite Dangerous?

I dusted off my Vive and spent a a couple hours on it and it’s fun and flying upside down over a planet surface and trying to land with flight assist off kinda messed with my stomach. Combat is definitely easier with the VR though, because it’s easier to keep my eyes on the enemy and line up my shots. Reading text is difficult though and I found text barely readable. Does anyone have any experience with the Vive Pro? Does the improved clarity add a lot to the experience?

Personally, I'd forget about the Vive Pro - ridiculously overpriced for what it is.

I'm going for the Pimax 5K+ when it's available.

I have and its great. Im waiting to see how ch 4 shapes up before buying it as its the only VR game I play but if ch 4 looks like something I want to play I'll upgrade my vive to a vive pro.

I wouldn't exactly call it an upgrade other than in price.
grab one of the new Pimaxies instead!

* that moment when someone who doesn't have VR tries to give someone who does advice based on stuff they read other peiple say in the internet.

its hard to grab vaporware. I think vive pro would be worth the upgrade if I continue playing this game.

Maybe I can play Star Citizen the actual completed game on that Pimax.

I've got the Vive Pro and play Elite with it. It's a FANTASTIC visual update. I mean seriously, it's enough. I don't think I need more (not that I'd refuse it). Really feels like you can see all the detail the game intends you to see, any more and you'd see the polys etc.

Very clear, stars are stunning, planet detail is breathtaking. Such an improvement over CV1. Lots of hope now that VR's potential is incredible

I'm pretty much right there, too. Not exactly thrilled with the mainstream companies' continued insistence that technology should cost an arm and leg for the actual value being given, especially when they've definitely competition in the market. Only recently did Oculus (Facebook) lower prices in recognition, and it seems HTC still has some catching up to do with Reality. (and not just virtually...)

Still undecided on the 5K+/8K but I'll simply wait for more reviews to unfold before I make the decision. I'm in no rush, considering I've already got a Lenovo Explorer and can still play in VR until then. ;)

Anyhoo... what's up with these developers and the lack of AAA VR games available? WMR has proven that it can be affordable, and it's not exactly "bleeding edge" technology anymore...

Pretty sure they make a loss on the hardware. Palmer Luckey said as much at the time. They want to make on the software. The hardware costs a bomb. I do feel the Vive Pro was a bit of a money grab though.

The thing with HTC is they are struggling for a cash flow.

They simply cannot invest much anymore so they need to make a profit on anything they sell.

They've already had to lay off half their workforce, sold the physical side of their mobile business and merged it with the Vive. Ok take these claims with a pinch if salt, but yeah Htc has been bleeding since Samsung launched the S2.

Problem is, HTC doesn't actually own key parts of the hmd.

The tracking sensor, and emitters.
Developed by Valve, and specs made available to anyone who wants them. Ok they need to file an application and have business plan to bring an end to market, but this is what pimax is doing.
The panels.
Bought from Samsung.

What's left, the software drivers and lenses?
The lenses are the worst part of the vive and primary reason I never bothered to get a pro.
(A lot has gone to the point of buying a gear, and swapping the vive pro lenses for the gear lenses, even though it messes up the distortion profile)

I honestly would be surprised if HTC comes out with a V.2 vive. One guess for seeing the vive brand surviving is if Amazon buys HTC. By then again, why would they, they don't really have much IP worth buying.

Pimax is about to release their sets to backers inside a few months.
The first few backers have already been given their final survey.
And if Pimax reaches market around christmas time with a package that comes in cheaper than the insane pro bundle HTC will be scrambling.

It’s a sad commentary that a company as seemingly amateurish as Pimax is about to embarrass the wider VR industry. This is coming from Vive Pro owner. I’ve never paid so much for a product and I use regularly, yet constantly resent the company I bought it from so much.

I’m eagerly awaiting my Pimax 5k+

During the funding and pre kickstarter tour, I got the feeling their amateurishness was mostly concerning a language barrier and lack of PR skills.

Sure might be handy when selling an HMD, but not so much for making one :p

I hope :)

The vive, to me though always felt super rushed, more like a devkit, pushed out the door to beat the Pre-order release of the rift.
Think I saw an interview that the Valve developers of the Lab only had access to a pair of wand controllers three weeks before they delivered the HMD to pre-orders.

A friend of mine did the Gear VR lens mod to his Vive and it really improves the visual quality. You'll need to buy and cannibalise a Gear VR and get some lens adaptors 3D printed for you if you don't have the means yourself, but it'll still be a lot cheaper than a Pro. I had a look at it myself and it's a big improvement over how his standard Vive image looked.

I'm waiting for prima 8k x, which will use native 4k rather than upscaling from 1440p

Hope they bring out soon.

I'm interested in prima 5k over normal prima 8k, reason being.. the reviews suggest 5k picture better due to not upscaling

Bu, ED needs virtual keyboard and buttons in game I think. VR gloves would be nice. How do people type systems names in galaxy map when using VR without

It's pretty much why Pimax sells the 5K+ too. No upscaling- native resolution.

I haven't yet "decided" on either, still waiting for those who've ordered them to do some proper unpaid non-shill reviews so I know what's really worth what, instead of jumping the gun. ;)

gotta love all the people who don't own a VR rig giving advice.

I own regular Vive and I tried Elite on Vive Pro at Lavecon. It is quite a big upgrade, visually. Comfort wise - a little bit better if you use Audio Strap and massive upgrade if you user the regular strap.

Not sure if I would recommend it for the price though.

Pretty much agree with drkai. I'm a vive pro early adopter and am very happy with the visual/comfort upgrade. Pimax might be better and cheaper or it might not. I decided not to wait it out for pimax based on their previous product. I'm just not sure that my pc could cope with the promised resolution and fov just yet. More than happy to stick with the pro for another couple of years until gpu's catch up.

I own the Oculus, and Vive with the new pro headstrap....

Looking at the Vive Pro reviews it definitely sounds like it would be a great upgrade from Oculus or Vive.

If you have the $$ and dont mind the FOV of the Vive Pro then I'd grab and enjoy it. It doesn't appear like there is a huge leap of resolution from the Vive Pro to the Pimax 5K HOWEVER the FOV of the Pimax is impressive! I personally am willing to wait a couple months to get a few more reviews of Pimax and until the 2080TI drops a little in price then grab both the new card and the Pimax and have me a hell of a vr rig for ED!!

I use a Vive Pro. Textures look much, much better and you can identify distant objects easier. The blacks are insanely good imo also. Text is much easier to read as well.

The resolution upgrade however does absolutely nothing to address my biggest pet hate with Elite - The god awful antialiasing. Station interiors and exteriors have that horrid 'fizz' effect still, which is ashame as I'd hoped to see a big improvement in that area. Only Fallout 4 VR manages to compete with Elite on that front, they both look incredibly poor when it comes to jaggies.

All in all, the higher res of the Pro meant lowering my GFX settings a fair bit, surprisingly the game looks much better than it did with higher settings and as much super sampling as I could get away with on my previous HMD. I'd mostly put that down to the over all clarity of the picture and how much better textures look with the device. Textures really pop with the Vive Pro and having never played Elite outside of VR I really had no idea just how much detail I'd been missing.

The Rift is still king when it comes to comfort imo, the Vive Pro weighs a tonne.

Can't say that SteamVR is that refined either coming from Oculus Home. I have to manually weak my Audio every time I turn the Pro on. The Rift was way more accessible when it came to ease of use but I guess if you own the original Vive you are acustomed to SteamVRs little "qwerks".

Not Elite related but damn, SkyrimVR with Dyndolod on the Vive Pro looks immense, it honestly blows my mind every time I fire that game up. The views are incredible, breath taking even. The clarity of distant objects really helps bring that game to life.

Personally I thought the pro was a significant upgrade - image quality is significantly better and text is very readable even when not in the sweet spot.

Considering I spend a lot of time in VR, I thought it was worth it. If you don't then hang on.
