Will expansions on elite be mandatory?

Since this is an online game how will these be handle? will you be sent to a server without the expansions? which I think will turn into you been almost alone in the server, or will you be on the same server just with the expansion instances locked (like WoW)?

Well If you think it through.

Its not different parts of the world being created, its walking around inside a station and your ship.

So may be some special activities and locations you can get to, with the update..

But you can still trade in your ship and fly about.

I'd see it more that way, same for planetary landings.. I would expect the game not to offer you missions requiring you to go to a planet's surface..

But with the sheer awesomeness of these updates, I can't imagine anyone not buying in.

As far as I understand it, these expansions will be "planetary landing" and "outside your ship" (first person shooter/whatever?). Furthermore I think the main part of Elite is and will always be space (trading, pirating, bounty hunting, exploring), so I don't think you will end up in empty instances if you're not jumping the expansions train.

But hey... I surely want to experience everything that Elite has to offer, so me personally, I will go for the expansions anyways :)

Edit(h) says: damn, one minute too slow ;)

Well yes they do sound awesome but I got late to the lifetime pass and well we don't always have spare money for games :p

Well, I'm one person that deliberately decided not to go for the lifetime expansion pass because I want to see what they're like first and if they truly fit into the Elite experience before I part with any money, so I like the idea that these expansions are optional. It means that every player can customise their own game with the expansions they like, whilst excluding others.

In my opinion, that's a game feature that should be trumpeted more by FD

True, there'll be the purist "vanilla" Elite players who won't go for any of the expansions, no matter how good they might be. They'll prefer the classic Elite gameplay. That's fair enough, but it's good that FD wont penalise them, or push them out for not wanting the expansions.

The interesting aspect to think about is how FD handle those who dont have the expansions. eg. Ship boarding. If I have the expansion and you don't, I cannot board your ship. Therefore you cannot be in the same instance as me or ED have to stop the option of me boarding you.

It can be solved in so many different ways, no need for separate instances.

They could make it so that people without the expansion can defend against boarding attempts but can't launch boarding attempts themselves. Chances are that some of the content related to EVA activity will be delivered via patches prior to the formal launch of the expansion, such as updates to the character models to pretty them up for walking around. They could make it so that some basic features of the expansion like defending against boarders and getting out of your chair are available to everyone, but only people with the expansion will be able to actually engage in Extra-vehicular activity, everyone else will be limited to IVA.

This will be an opportunity for Frontier to display a message of advertising, indicating that you may not realize an operation without the expansion

That wouldn't seem right, and could appear as FD coercing a player into getting an expansion they don't want. More likely, there'd be a simple game mechanic for it. Probably an AI controlled one.

what if you board a ship of a owner who has the expansions but you do not??

will you get thrown in to pace?
when he lands.

guess planetary landings and walking around are the same extension.
or he can leave the ship and you cannot.
very curious how they solve this.

However, you noticed that Frontier does not hesitate to use advertising in an insistent manner in the newsletters for example. Frontier also has a catchy enough business sense. You have also remarked

you wont be forced to buy expansions to continue playing, but if you don't we will come round your house and look at you funny until you do ;)

That is tempting me to NOT go for any expansions. I just need to check if we got enough beer in the fridge ;) :D

There will be an expansion for them too, wire-frame graphics

yeah but don't punish other people who want to spend money on quality games. lol

it makes sence to buy these games at high price because they are offering much more than gta because this will be the first space gta
i spent 120$ on Watchdogs and gta. if they can provide a a beautifully made, living city that can compare to gta but have it futuristic and put two of them in the game why would'nt you?
because you can literally spend hours and choose not fly if you so want.
that's a wetdream of videogaming
