PvP Sportsmanship and ego

I want to start out by saying I like pvp and welcome it. I fly with crimes off and don't mind being attacked. Even when I lose, I send out a salute and well played. Money is no concern, I have thousands of rebuys. Usually players I fight are cool guys and good sports. Recently though I got attacked by a full wing of players while flying alone and clean. I gladly fought to the bitter end rebought my ship without any anger. Its beaten to death here why people gank and what not. People call eachother names and heated arguments spin off on tangents over the WHY. I get why. Same reason gangs do what they do. I'm not here to debate or rant. What I'm asking for is that those who thrive on gang killing ask themselves whether succumbing to mob mentality is actually more rewarding than playing as a sportsman to the end. If the answer is yes, so be it but just think it over.

Well before I discovered E|D I put PvP behind me for this very reason. I found that enough of the players interested in grouping around PvP content, were poor sports, and mean spirited. There were/are enough players like this that each group I find/found myself associated with drives me away for the fear of becoming just like them. Again. I am gamer embarrassed about the times I have succumbed to the very mob mentality you mention.

I'm glad that a PvP approved Commander brought this up. Were pilot with a different reputation to bring this up, you would be shouted down without question. Let's hope your sentiment gains some traction.

Hey Trolly, I actually go with the gang killing and so does my group. We fear them and when go to a CG or high traffic areas we plan it out like a military exercise and wing up ourselves. When someone comes after us we scream like girls (some of us are girls IRL) and then we high wake the hell out of there.
We have a great time.
I think of it like some sort of LARP when they play the baddies for our gaming pleasure.
I say keep elite DANGEROUS!

That is a valid perspective and I enjoy the danger too. I can see how the Dynamics become interesting when you yourself have back up. I'm not suggesting changes to the game or an end to PVP. Personally, I will never stop flying in open and will stand and fight regardless of the situation. The hunter doesn't live for the kill, the hunter lives for the hunt. So long as bullets are still coming out of my ship, I will be there facing down the odds. I'm just expressing some disappointment in my fellow warriors who maybe forgot why they put so much effort into building their ships and practicing. Do they know the difference between a hollow victory and an earned one? I suspect some don't know the difference. That's all I'm getting at.

I totally get where you are coming from. My gaming group comes straight from GTA where we are used to being totally out classed by crews who have tanks etc compared to our sports cars and almost twice the health because they are such a high level.
I imagine they also have hollow victories as they murder us in large numbers then move onto the next victims.
We ended up in GTA and now in high traffic areas in elite, making running away to live another day an art form and part of our game play.
Rep inbound.

i don't care for gang mentality in life or in games. the toxicity of male ego and the desire to kill and conquer everything just for the lols. it preys on the innocent and can dominate a society with only a few bad apples.

with that said i can't see a game as open as elite without a criminal element. and the players who, be it role play or a genuine malfunction of social decency, play the criminal are a part of that open world.

criminals are going to criminal. as long as i have a means to fight or escape its just another obstacle to overcome and a skill to perfect.

when the gameplay results in negative behavior being so dominant there is no counter that to me is when there is a problem.

the example i also think back to is the cancer patient who was given a cg to create a base before he died being attacked by what i would call a criminal element in game. it was a disgusting act. but it was followed up by one of the most human and heart felt gestures of the community and they overcame the attack. as long as that dynamic holds then to each their own.

Repped OP, I fully support sportsmanship and enjoy a good set of fair fights, but being pestered by tools who fly just to irritate others (As far as I can tell), is just boring, often it is the same folks who hide in solo play until they have numbers, or do anything they can to avoid 1v1's, running, high waking, logging out to name a few methods.

It's cowardly and slimy imo.

Role playing a crim is one thing, but going round in groups of 6 to 8 and then sending abuse when their target leaves or out-interdicts them is ust pathetic.

PvP in ED isn't just honorable 1v1 dueling though... If the aim of the action is to kill the target (many reasons as to why this might be the case), then ganking is the most efficient way to do it.

If you try and kill a half decent player on your own, they will wake out 9/10 times before you can kill them.

I agree and as this games "prey" I feel that I can say that ganking may not be honorable but it is tactical.

From Sun Tzu:
If you outnumber the enemy ten to one, surround them.
If you outnumber them five to one, attack them.
If you outnumber them two to one, divide them.
If you are equal, then find an advantageous battle.
If you are fewer, defend against them.
If you are much weaker, evade them.
Small forces are not powerful. However, large forces cannot catch them.

Well said. It may only be a game but, like other games and social events, there is usually a negative element just like criminality in real life I suppose.

this is why the p2p thing is such a shame. no counter possible. the mechanic doesn't counter, frontier doesn't counter and the players can't counter either. cl cust both ways. if people could be actively chased and confronted, if whole areas could be policed, we would have a different situation. as is stands, the game is just not pvp worthy except in prearranged encounters. it's no wonder that jerks go wild.

disagree. there is no practical goal, i don't think sun tzu would consider the mere pleasure of executing the weak of any value. this isn't even a war, so sun tzu would urinate on these jerks.

Cool, what about if attached to the BSG so there is a war? Like in and around Eravate? Lots of baby seal clubbing going on there but groups are in there fighting for and against the safety of this area?

Apparently Sigmund Freud, was somthing of a talented, amateur pole vaulter in his youth. ;)

that could be. do you think it does work? genuinely asking. i guess it's a matter of perspective, and players looking for that fight may even have fun. same as polite roleplaying pirates when they casually meet a polite roleplaying victim.

and what would sun zu say about hordes of warriors conquering territory unmolested in a parallel universe? whole new chapter in the 'book' for sure! :D

A common one I've seen from some people is bothering a group or faction in their battleship, then when someone actually brings their own PVP ship out to face them, they duck into a port and switch to a cheap/clean ship so if the people they're trolling open fire on them they got a bounty/notoriety. Then usually proceed to taunt them in chat.

Hey dude. It cool, as I am being genuine too. I like to think of them as bandit warlords burning and looting the country side and Sun Tzu tactics kicking in once armed battle takes place.
At that stage who is "good" and who is "bad" disappears and we are left with how to win. And in this I believe we can both agree that Sun Tzu rocks.

Game play and roleplay wise I have no control over the opposition so as a roleplayer myself I give them, in my head, fully fleshed out "reasons"
This way my group have a great time even though we might be against gankers.

way to go, smart way to play. but you're just adapting to the circumstances so that you can enjoy your experience. while this is good, it's kind of limited.

you could also want to ask for support from your faction, to try an clear the area or secure a passage. or you could want to enlist yourself in the task force. you might want to strike their now undefended home base when they don't expect it (sun tzu would probably nod with an enigmatic smile :)), to create a diversion or teach them a lesson. there are a lot of possibilities which are all reasonable and to be expected and ... just don't happen, or very seldom and in a very limited way. at least that i know of, and imo that's because the game makes them extremely difficult for players to implement, if at all possible. and in extreme cases ... well, see the post above yours.

while your gameplay is brilliant ... this is still senseless gankers paradise, and players can't really do anything to address that.

All true my dude, but elite is so much better than our time in GTA!

hehe. well, not been much in gta. i guess you mean there was a lot of predation going on there too? fair enough. however i'd like to think that elite has a significant mature audience that could create precedent, set example and establish a fair pvp culture to make it possible. and both cutthroat and fun! maybe i'm wrong, but i guess we'll never know!
