New players venting

I see so many new players getting frustrated with ED and venting on the forum. Sometimes it is about the difficulty and other times it is about the cost. I as well as many others have answered many of their questions but it drains us per the focus of working out the issues in Beta.

Let FD respond while we do all we can to break the current Beta version. Replying to players who are frustrated with the game dynamics is a good thing but our priority at the moment is to push the limits and work out all the bugs. Dealing with players who vent is a waste of our time at the moment.

Once the game is distributed in the 4th quarter of 2014 (well I have doubts about that) there will be plenty of time to reply to forum messages. So let's focus on what we need to do now and forget all the complaints on the forum.

Push the limits. I did a thread using a Lakon 9 as a combat platform. With so many talented users there are other scenarios I never considered. Go for them!

does frontier have a long history of missing deadlines or something?

Not in the time I ve known them, no. But if you look at the list of things that are theoretically missing from the game for release you ll see it is staggering:

http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?p=443428#post443428

So one of 3 main possibilities:

- FDEV have already progressed most of those without showing it and will deliver fully as per plan or
- FDEV will take some compromises (cut some content out of release) and deliver on time or
- FDEV will deliver all features discussed so far but with a delay.

In decades past the answer is Yes. There were a lot of legal issues when everyone wanted a piece of the pie. Most of the delay in Elite 4 was Braben getting the rights to publish.

As I understand it Ian Bell sold his interest in the Elite games when the market was good for him to several investors, but still keeping a patent on his inputs to the design of the universe. Braben took years to find and acquire all the rights to the game. I may not be correct in my analysis as back then when I was doing personal emails to Braben working on a PDA version of Elite he was in a legal mess at the time. We nailed Elite on a PDA and even got some great reviews but with the legal issues in the
U.K. our team could never publish.

2014 I think FD finally got their act together. So much info is available on You Tube including live podcasts with the designers online where you can ask questions in real time.

The world has changed so dramatically with the Internet in the last 30 years.

That is so true. GameTek who distributed Frontier: First Encounters in April of 1995 didn't let Braben work out all the bugs in the game. They were looking for a quick profit. They lost and filed chapter 11 a year later.

I'm glad that we are now dealing with FD directly who with Kickstarter can bypass all the distribution crap from years ago.

I beg to differ. Sure, there are players venting their anger, but reading between the lines usually exposes their short-fusedness. Which again is perfectly fine. No game is build for everyone. But in general, I read an awefull lot of enthusiastic threads about people in awe, or blown away (not blown up...) about his game. Imho, this game does not have a structural problem, so enjoy the occasional handbag fight. In silence of course ;), our focus should be giving advice, what you already stated.

I am totally OK with venting, as long as poster abides to forum rules. I guess FD also don't mind.

What I have problematic that people haven't look around for information before coming and complaining here.

i quite enjoy some of those threads, worth getting the popcorn out for as the op tries to justify their anger while everyone points out how misguided they are.

People come to these forums looking for help with their difficulties with the game. That that often comes in the form of frustrated 'venting' posts is quite understandable, because it is not easy to find the information they need, and there is not yet much in the way of official manuals to get people started.

I personally have recieved a huge amount of help, advice and tips from other forums members since I got the premium beta, and try to return the care that has been extended to me, by extending it to newer players who are looking for help.

I would encourage everyone to help where they can.

Amongst other things doing that promotes the good atmosphere on the forums, which is to everyones advantage.

To some extent, our style of response to the DIFFICULT threads (or posts) will have a direct influence on the tone of the forum as a whole.

If we collectively maintain level heads, point people at the helpful resources we know are available, and avoid becoming jaded and short with people, we'll stand a better chance at keeping a good level of civility and maturity here.

The computer game industry has a long history of missing deadlines :D

For what it's worth FD has been treating their deadlines seriously. Their only mistake so far is been promise to deliver ED in this year's spring - and it was done during KS when lot of things were influx. They got start of alpha right though.

So unless there are unpredictable circumstances, I believe FD really plans to deliver gamma (and possibly retail version) at the end of this year.

It wouldn't be a proper development project if there were no delays which prevented it from reaching its deadline... it would upset the balance of the universe if it came to pass :D

Straight face?

Maturity? Capt Kremmen would this involve landing an anaconda at high speed, backwards at a docking station?:D I thought for a moment you were going to add..setting a good example:D

I agree if new players took a bit of time and looked through all the forum threads most questions have been raised and theres loads of good replies, videos explanations etc. we're all passionate about the game so lets keep the humour there as well:D

Testing isnt a full time job :)

If you havent got time to test and respond to help and venting threads youre probably testing a bit too much :)

I'm happy to help anyone, I always try to respond to a 1st time poster especially if his thread went off the radar.

The ridiculous complaining ones like the 'omg bugs in a beta'. 'I want my money back cos betas should be fully featured' threads are the ones I need to try to learn to avoid. :)
