Lenovo Explorer on GTX 1050 4GB, will it work?

Hi everyone,

I'm quite new to this ED Forum thingy (10 minutes old) :D and although I've searched a lot, I could not find anything here or on the internet about ED's performance with a Lenovo Explorer WMR on a GTX 1050 4GB.

I know that it handles WMR and that people are playing games smoothly, for a 1050, but our dear Elite Dangerous is graphic intensive and I don't want to risk getting the explorer before knowing that it actually works, because ED is the only game I play these days. I would really appreciate it if you shed some light on this matter.

By the way, my system handles ED on Ultra settings on a 1920x1080 screen like a charm, 60 to 40 FPS around stations. Full specs below:

CPU: 7t Gen Intel Core i5 7300HQ 2.5Ghz
RAM: 16GB at 2400MHz
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 4GB of Dedicated RAM (can share up to 8)
SSD: 120 GB

Cheers!

P.S. I'm not interested in knowing how much better Vive or Rift are or suggestions on changing my system.

I think you'll be ok, maybe need vr low settings though.

I'm running a 970 and an explorer with tweaked medium VR settings and it's good. ASW is permanently on, and although I have the odd dizzy inducing stutter in rings and on planets I'm very, very happy with it.
Edit : I had tried a rift cv1 on the 970 before and the text on the explorer is far more readable

Thanks for the information ;) Your 970 is far more superior to my humble 1050.
I’ve never tried VR. So my question is the following: is it worth it to get to VR in mid-low end when I’m playing ultra on my monitor? Won’t that downgrade my ED experience?

The 1050ti is barely comparable and a few steps behind a 960 which is a significant step behind a 970.

No.
I cannot recommend any VR option on that level of performance.

Elite's recommendation of a 980ti should still stand.
And spacewarp is why it's barely playable on anything less, honestly also on the 980ti in demanding situations.

Just because some wmr experiences can get away with a lower set of hardware requirements does not change that the major titles need far more.

I ran the GTX 970 for quite a while, I really don't think you'd like the VR experience on LOW settings. Unless you're looking to upgrade the GPU in the near future to at least GTX 1060 6gb or plan on using it in other, less demanding games, I wouldn't bother.

Thanks for talking me out of spending 200 bucks on an experience which would have left no impression CMDR’s.
Watch your six out there!

It is a sad reality.

I love the VR and wish anyone could use it.
But I'm afraid if you attempt VR on hardware not able to at least maintain steady 45 fps and reprojection.
It will make you physically ill.
Not just disappoint.

B&H Photo has it on sale for $99 for the headset only https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1364658-REG/lenovo_g0a20001ww_explorer_mixed_reality_headset.html
Which is all you need for Elite. You could then apply the extra hundred toward a GTX 1060 6 gb https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...0446076&PID=6163686&SID=jn0u7xooxw011rh100053 or https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...0446076&PID=6163686&SID=jn0u9n7gem011rh100053 for $249... That would give you a decent VR setup for less than the cost of a Rift... The CPU still may be a little low though.

Nevermind, I didn't realize you running a laptop.

I appreciate it that you tried to help me find better prices anyway!

But as you said, I'm running a laptop. And I say that with a smile on my face, because before the current generation of powerful yet affordable laptops I had stopped playing games for more than 6 years due to constant travelling, which would prevent me from investing on a powerful desktop. But the next time I change job/country, I'll just pack the laptop and its charger and I'm good too go.

By the way, how did you realize I was on a laptop?

Your processor is a laptop specific model... I travel a lot as well, but I have to cart a boat anchor of a laptop with an AutoCAD NVidia processor in it. It will play some games but the main2 I play are Elite, which I play in VR, and Battlefield, which doesn't play nice with crappy hotel WiFi. So I play only at home.

I have a Lenovo Explorer and it runs Elite great on a 1050ti and i5, can't comment on the 1050

The 1050ti

No.

I cannot recommend any VR option on that level of performance.

There must be a problem with your PC - my 1050ti runs Elite and all VR games without issue using the Lenovo Explorer and sixth gen i5

Ha!! That's some interesting information CMDR. The 1050ti version is some 15% more powerful that the 1050, give or take, which means you have a more similar rig to mine. What settings are you running for VR? Mid-Low?

At what settings? Post a screenie of your setting in ED profiler if you can.

I'm using a Windows Mixed Reality headset with an i7-770HQ CPU @ 2.80Hzand the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050.

Elite is the only game I play. I have no problems running with VR low or VR medium settings. I haven't bothered trying High or Ultra.

The game is beautiful, runs smoothly, and the experience is still amazing after countless hours of play.

Just ordered one of these, should get it next week.

Running a GTX 1060, i5 4690k, ssd and 8gb of old ram. (Might finally have a reason to overclock the processor). If anyone could post their settings that would be great cheers.
