Hi. Last few months I've been... Very aware of my faith. Not going to go into detail as this question is not about religion and I don't want to break any rules. I'm simply explaining why I'm looking at getting a small tattoo.

Anyway, my question is about pain. I know it will hurt. I'm perfectly acceptant of this and I've been working on my breathing anyway, to deal with pain.

I was just wondering if the region of my body that I'm looking to ink is particularly painful compared to lther regions.

The region I'd like to get it done is anywhere between my wrist and my elbow joints, on the top of my forearm.

Is this an area that's more painful than others?

It's only a small image that I want, all black. It's about the symbolism for me, and I want other people to see it, hence the body region I'm asking about.

I have a tattoo on the inside of my elbow, just below the joint. I guess that's the closest to the area you're thinking about. Honestly it didn't hurt any worse than my others. Getting a tattoo is uncomfortable yeah, but it's most akin to fast cat scratches. I've been in the tattooist's chair for several hours at a time and it was unpleasant, yeah, but not excruciating.

Tattooing is like having a cat scratch you. It burns for a little but after about five minutes it's more like someone just giving you a continuous annoying pinch for an hour or so.

My tattoos are decades old and, given the fact that everyone has them these days, I wouldn't bother getting one.

When I got both my tattoos it wasn't "trendy"........ now I see them on everyone and some have great artwork that has been put on the wrong body part for the shapes and some have artwork that just sucks. Occasionally I see a tattoo that is extremely good.

Think it over carefully. I know they can be removed but that is a weak excuse for getting one, they should always be considered as something you are doing to your body that will last the rest of your life (but the line work may bleed or blur over time, not on mine though).

I have no regrets about either of mine but it isn't a decision that should be rushed into.

Find good artwork and make sure it's placed on the right body part for the shape of the part and the art.

Agreed on the 'make sure about it' bit. :D

I should say that while it *is* possible to remove tattoos now via laser, it's A)expensive, B)even more painful than getting one and C)Not 100% effective.

I only have one tattoo - and that was after an impromptu gig covering bass for a band I'd never heard of in Canada on a random trip :D

It doesn't hurt really. I'm not even sure I'd describe it as more than a bit of pressure.

Roadrash now, that hurt's ;)

Don't forget the tattoo you had on our drunken night out.

I've got 13 tattoo's at the moment and had many when I was a stupid teenager :) and they're pretty bad.

Take your time and think very carefully before going into the shop.

While the others have spoken about the moral side of getting a tat I will just say that the area you are wanting to ink should be a piece of cake. It is not a particularly sensitive part of the body and has plenty of meat above the bone to absorb the shock.

I have about 35 hours of time in the chair and my most painful spot was in my underarm area just next to the hairline there. That was interesting. Other fun spots were right on the elbow bone (that vibrated all the way to my collarbone) and funny bone spot (for obvious reasons).

Tender spots like inside of wrist, inside crease of the elbow, under the arm, near the nipple.....those are more likely to cause grief than meaty spots like top of forearm, upper arm, etc.

If you are still unsure, ask your artist do a quick dry run, just a zzzztt, with no ink to give you an idea of what you are in for. Another tip is to not drink for a day or two beforehand as alcohol will make you bleed more. Aspirin will also make you bleed more as it thins the blood. And use Neosporin (or other triple-antibiotic ointment) during the healing process. Some artist use A&D ointment because it's cheaper, but it's less effective.

I have a tattoo at the region you describe. I don't remember it hurting at all, but was done years ago, by a great tattoo artist.

Just think it over and take your time before deciding. Tattoos are pretty much a permanent thing, so do them for a reason. I wouldn't even bother today really, they are too much of a fashion thing.

I've got one, looked great 20 years ago not so much now they blur over time. I'd advise getting one somewhere it doesn't show as it can put people off, above the elbow and below the neck so even on a hot day its not visible unless you want it to be. Don't get anything fashionable as that's a five year thing at best (celtic bands stars and suchlike).

With the benefit of hindsight I wouldn't bother at all.

Whatever you do don't get a text tattoo of something you feel is clever or pithy as your opinions on that will change over time, same goes for significant others names.

Don't tell Jenner that......look back up thread. :D

One thing nobody has mentioned and maybe it's different for everybody but it would be a good idea to eat something decent about an hour before you go. I have 9 tattoos and for a couple i didn't eat and I got light headed within a few minutes of starting. If you get light headed don't try to power through it. Just tell the artist and they'll give you a minute to recover. They've seen it before and it only lasts for a short while. Then you should be good for the rest of the way.

I have them spread everywhere...wrists, shoulders, calves ECT....but the one that wasn't too great is the one going down the side of my ribs. It's a full body Alice from American Mcgee's Alice...yes giant game nerd here. It's a little big (11in x 11in) with a bit of shading done. Because it's near the ribs there were some sensitive spots but I had trouble with him rubbing over finished areas. After a few hours it felt like it was being rubbed raw.

Got 22 tats and currently halfway through a full arm piece...thats wrist to shoulder. Thing to remember is that it only hurts bad when its on soft skin like the inside of yer forearm or when its close to the bone. On the bone like yer spine, ankles, ribs etc will make ye cry and sob like a baby so its ok to take breaks.

Where yer thinking of is one the easiest places so ye should be ok...unless yer the sort who just cant stand any pain at all. If ye are then dont bother...nothing as bad as a half finished ink cos ye cant stick the pain...not as uncommon as ye might think even on guys who are supposedly hard as nails. Everyone has different tolerance levels and not all artists will permit alcohol or weed...thankfully I dont have that issue and I use the same guy all the time because of it.

Tis like a dentist...some have no bother at all while others need the twilight sleep fer fillings and have to be forced through the door.

Also, remember yer aftercare...I would recommend bepanthen or possibly E45 cream fer the first few days and dont pick the scabs...and they will itch like hell...dont scratch or ye will ruin it. Dont use specialist nappy rash cream like sudocream as there are chemicals in it that will fade the ink...most artists will have their own recommendations as to what ye should use. Cocoa butter is great fer bringing colours out when its healed up...its like T cut wax fer skin ^

Appreciate the concern guys. :)

I've been thinking about this for years now, so much so that I'm now all-but-certain I want to do this.

It's a mark of faith for me, and that part of my life is about the only constant in my time on Earth. It's going to stay with me until the day I die, and beyond.

Furthermore, I happen to have the fortune of being friends with a family who are obsessed with tattoos, and through them I've met some of the UK's most famous body-modders. These guys are extremely well-qualified to help me out with this endeavour, and have already directed me to the tattoo shop they use, which is high-quality work.

I of course am turning to my friends as my primary information source, as I have good reason to trust them. These are IRL friends who I meet frequently in person.

Still, purely on the topic of "how bad does a tattoo hurt", which is the only question I ask of you guys today, that question is perfectly harmless (irony) to post here.

I've been discussing my commitment with my friends for years. That's why I'm sure about this. It isn't about being trendy, it isn't fashion. It's a mark of what I am, and visual symbolism is extremely important to me.
