is cross-platform going to hinder.....

Let me make another observation about "cross platform" play and Consoles vs Computers:

Ive played World of Tanks both on PC (up to Tier 10) and on Xbox 360 edition (up to about tier 6).
The way that people pay is vastly different. Stupid stuff that people do on PC's at Tier 1, and learn "what not to do" by tier 4, they are still doing at Tier 6 on the Xbox. (e.g. drive across an open field with no cover, stand out in the open wondering why they are getting shot-up, etc).
I don't know if its just that game, but It is like the worst possible players are doing the same stupid moves on Xbox even at the higher levels. not that stupid moves don't occur on the PC game also, but the play style just seems more "goof off" on the Xbox server.

Probably younger player base. You also get your fair share of numptys on PC games too. Look at this game. Its not a numpty free environment.

Consoles cant really cheat either so at least theres they would reduce the cheater ratio if a few million joined up.

ED was talking about cross platform gaming, now i know not all companies hinder the pc game solely for consoles, *cough* watchdogs *cough*. but how will cross platform affect the pc version of the game...
or it won't?

Companies cut all kind of corners doing bad ports. It is problem not with technology, but with attitude.

FD has experience and well game designers on board to counter that.

And I wouldn't expect ED to come out to last-gen consoles. Thus it is kinda moot to worry about that.

This, exactly. I've see great ports done on consoles with weaker hardware, and bad ports done for consoles with better hardware.

Their work on the Rollercoaster games for Xbox gives a good indication they know what they are doing. I don't think "technical" reasons are a huge hindrance, its all the other issues surrounding making a game for a console.

Its obviously going to be better to focus on one system than having to consider multiplat and spread the focus and workload. Most of the best games on consoles are exclusives. Same with PC.

But thats usually when they are going for simultaneous release which its effected hasnt happened here.

They are going to have to make it a level playing field gameplay wise though. They cant have console owners making 10 times more cash than PC owners cos console owners generally have less patience, and then chuck them in an arena together. Cant give them better homing lasers cos they complain its too hard to hit something either.

It would have to be the same game on console as PC and would that work with a console audience. Theres a lot of PC owners moaning about how hardcore they find it all, how will the console crowd react :)

cross platform doesn't necessarily means pc vs console.

in this case I think it means more like mac pc and linux machines.
and maybe Xbox one because if I'm correct that one has keyboard possibilities.

I guess it'll be down to how it's handled. It is one of gamings great quandaries to me that cross-play hasn't become the "next great thing" in the way it should really have done by now. I think this is mainly down to the fact that the games that have tried it more than most have also places a premium on twitch controls, and that always favours one platform over another. ED could buck that trend because it already supports a very wide range of control methods and is also not just about PvP combat. It is however built around a huge galaxy and having people playing on many different devices could greatly add to the games scope, not to mention 'lived in' feel. So, bring it on I say!

The problem with multi-platform play is something to do with Microsoft, not keyboard and mouse vs controller. I was really hoping next gen consoles would come without the stupid isolationist attitude. We could start a campaign against Microsoft to force them to allow it though.

You should see how Eve (PC) and Dust (PS3) worked. And there are just a small number of people being really vocal on their opinion of fun like they are experts in fun.

I don't want this new Elite to be solely the domain of us 30+ yr old guys on high end PCs :)

Elite fired up our imaginations when we were 5-10yrs old. I want that to happen to a new generation.

And the're much more likely to be on consoles. I want them playing Elite.

Speaking of consoles, it would be really cool if Sony's Playstation 4 VR headset technology (Project Morpheus) takes-off.
And perhaps, just perhaps, the way E:D looks to be a "showcase game" for the Occulus Rift on PC's, some version of ED could be a showcase for Sony's console VR.

I like the idea of VR headsets being "the next big thing" but it won't be _mainstream_ until a console, like maybe PS4+Morpheus, makes it easy and (somewhat) affordable.

that's not entirely true there are plenty of people spending money on computers now and many more looking into it simply for gaming. and O-rift is going to cost 350$....

With a universe as big as that of ED, the more people you can get in to it from any platform the better.

I don't think there is any technical reason why the current gen consoles could not run the game - in fact with built in voice control, tracking, comms, friend systems etc, Consoles may well provide a nice experience.

There may however be political/commercial reasons....

MS have traditionally been very concerned about getting money from multiplayer games and thus kept their Live service closed down - but the xbone is in trouble since its sold about half as well as PS4 to date, so I think now would be the time they would be prepared to open up their service. Whether Elite is a big enough name for them to do that I don't know, but they obviously already have some experience with FD.

Sony seem to be easier to deal with for commercial stuff, however, they already have No Man's Sky exclusive to their console so they might feel Elite is unnecessary for PS4 (and conversely this might make MS more interested in order to give them something on Xbone that counters NMS).

From FD's perspective consoles are a big potential revenue stream if they can crack the market and the current gen consoles are technically closer to PCs than they have been for a long time. Porting to consoles should be low risk technically and there is potentially a huge revenue stream for FD if Elite is popular with console players.

Toad.

Hopefully the game will not be altered for the consoles. When it does come out for consoles I will be repurchasing it since most of my friends that love elite do not want to spend money on a new PC just for one game.
This makes me wonder when the game comes out on consoles, me having bought it for PC, would I have the option to change to console with a small fee and keeping my carreer intact?
Keeping fingers crossed for such an option :)

i just hope it will be able to handle the future cities that ED will be putting in. and i hope my experience as a pc player isnt hindered for them
and if if does for some reason i vote to sacrifice the peasant.
MS i love them. but the fact they charge monthly for you to use your own internet is really....ugly...to say it best.
but we do have to thank the peasents since they will be the ones supporting elite for us.

i doubt it:/, but if anything you might to still be able to play with them on cross platform multiplayer.
but if not.....well it would save us from those kids cussing at us calling us cigar buds when we defeat them

As far as I know both Sony and MS has been more liberal regarding what they allow for networking for next gen platforms. Crossplatform playing is real posibility.

I think it would be great to be able to play alongside console players, many people are playing on pc with xbox controllers so I don't see that there's a competitive advantage to PC against console users (especially when they also have the option of joysticks/mice if they choose to buy them, just like we do). The only sticking point might be the FPS expansion which will likely give the advantage to PC players (since we all have mice, but console gamers do not.) so some clever balancing may be used.

Battlefield 4 uses servers outside of sony/MS for multiplayer so that is certainly ont out of scope and Call of Duty has always used P2P for lobbies so the networking side should not be a limiting factor at all.

(I guess there's no reason the Mac and PC players couldn't be instanced together, if they can get along ;) )
That reminds me, as there is an obvious pecking order, NPC, Windows player, Mac elite, I only want to fight and kill and massacre and slaughter .... ahem, sorry ..... Mac users otherwise my game, and by extension my life, will be ruined.

I trust the Mac elite will be easily spotted on the scanner with a prominent apple icon to allow me to play the game MY WAY!!!!!!!!

;)

many people are playing on pc with xbox controllers.

With Xbox controllers alone or together with a keyboard?

Because that's pretty much the issue here. It's not so much that consoles themselves are bad (although their hardware is subpar), the issue is that when people start developing stuff for consoles they don't want to require a keyboard and instead try to shove everything onto the controller.
But since it's impossible to make all the commands of a PC-complex game fit on a controller, the "solution" most studios find in the end is to dumb everything down and reduce the number of commands.

ED can only come to consoles if a keyboard becomes mandatory to play it, and I don't really see that happening.

personally i dont see cross platform as being a problem, i play on the PC using an xbox 360 controller and the only problem i have is that the 360 chat pad isn't properly supported by windows.

a console port wouldn't have that issue.

also Fdev have the cobra engine that is capable of cross platform anyway and as other users have stated they have plenty of experience of cross platform releases.

With xbox controllers alone, all you need is something to type (xbox chatpad) for use with a console and consoles all support VOIP.

There's plenty of buttons on an xbox 360 controller (18 bindable buttons + 2x analogue sticks) to control the game.
