Hardware & Technical How much is a PC that will play this?

Ive always been a console gamer. Had I known how much I would love Elite, I would have asked this question a long time ago. I currently play on PS4
Im interested in a setup that I will play on my 1080P plasma. I dont need the latest and greatest, but I would like to have the potential to upgrade parts as I go.
How much do I really need to spend to have a comparable experience to my PS4?

These days, you can probably get a full ryzen apu setup for < 500 easy.

Even the ryzen embedded single board computer ought to be able to play it fine. Just add ram + the 300 dollar board+case+psu.

You can go yesteryear tech and do it for far less. I always suggest amd, but since you're caring about upgradability, i dont think there's any other real viable option. Intel changes their sockets out all the time.

Anything made in the last 3 years should be more than enough.

Yeah you don't need much. The game isn't very demanding. Like he said, anything in the last couple years. And a $300 video card and you can probably play on the highest settings.

Agreed, there's little need to overdo things on the GPU front unless you're also planning to play more demanding titles. My 3GB 780Ti (2013 vintage) finally threw its feet in the air earlier in the week and I've replaced it with an 8GB 1080. Not the cutting edge but a few generations ahead of what I had. In practical terms it's made very little difference to my ED experience (2560 x 1080).

If I analyse the frame rates they've gone up by between 10% and 30% depending on location, but if I turn all the metrics off it plays subjectively pretty much as it did before. The biggest difference is that the PC doesn't run out of resources as quickly when running multiple third-party apps, but that's more of a side benefit. ED itself is amazingly GPU efficient. The biggest performance drags tend to be the various antialiasing options. The Cobra engine doesn't seem to play well with any of them.

Obviously if you're looking at eventual 4K, VR, triple-monitor or beyond, or playing more demanding games alongside ED, then you need a more future-proof GPU and it all starts to get pricier. But for a dedicated 1080p ED rig you're better off spending any extra cash you might have on a faster CPU or more RAM, which will give immediate benefits to the whole system and a bit more future-proofing. GPU-wise, ED is surprisingly light and you should be able to pick up a suitable card for relatively little outlay.

You should be able to pick one up easily for under $700 US. Get at least 8 gig of ram, a GTX 1050ti and a 4 core processor running around 3.5 Ghz and you will be able to run pretty much on ultra settings.

Minimum:
OS: Windows 7/8/10 64-bit
Processor: Quad Core CPU (4 x 2GHz)
Memory: 6 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GTX 470 or AMD R7 240 (Direct X 11 functionality required)
Network: Broadband Internet Connection
Hard Drive: 8 GB available space

Recommended:
OS: Windows 7/8/10 64-bit
Processor: Intel Core i7-3770K Quad Core CPU or AMD FX 4350 Quad Core CPU
Memory: 8 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GTX 770 / AMD Radeon R9 280X or better
Network: Broadband Internet Connection
Hard Drive: 25 GB available space

I have an older secondary PC with a Pentium 4560 + GTX 960 2GB and 8Gb DDR 4 runs the game at 1080P @ 60Hz on lower settings, looks fine plays well, a 1050 Ti with a quad core and 8 Gb of decent ram would run ED as it's a well optimised piece of software.

A friend runs ED on an i3 3240 (3.4GHz 2 core plus hyperthreading) and 8gb RAM, they have an Nvidia GTX950 & it's quite an even match. It'll stay over 30fps on a planet or in a station, over 60fps in space, probably about £300 worth of PC all in.

It's worth bearing in mind that in the same way a console can also be useful as a media player, a PC can be useful for more than just games.

My system is an older i7, 4790, with a more recent video card. It runs ED w/o any issues on ultra settings.

You don't need the latest CPU but I wouldn't scrimp on the video card.

I've played ED on:

an i5, 1080 (my main machine)
a Macbook Air 2011 (Intel 4000) - ok for hauling, not so much for combat
a GPD Win (Intel 4000) - not bad with everything at low
a GPD Pocket (Intel 4050) - better than the Win, a bit
a M$ Surface Go 615 - not too shabby surprisingly at low settings

So your mileage will vary.

You can play on a really cheap machine if you're ok turning the quality down. Anything with a GFX card release in the last 3 years will run it with 'acceptable' performance - depending on your definition of acceptable.

But for 1080p anything above or at a 1050 would do easily. Get a decent PSU though, as that limits the upgrade path more than anything else (especially if you go for a branded PC with custom parts).

Bare in mind that if you use windows 10 instead of, say, windows 7, then you will need an extra 4 GB RAM and a faster HD (or a SSD) because windows 10 has so many....ahrm....features.

Ran it on 4th gen i5 with a GTX 960 and 8GB RAM on highm 40-60FPS. (probably around 300 bucks, today)
Ran it on 400 bucks laptop with 5th gen i3 and GT940M and 4GB RAM on medium, 40-60FPS
Now I have a 600 bucks PC with Ryzen 5, 16GB RAM, RX580 and run it on Ultra, stable 60FPS and on medium settings in VR without a hiccup.

It really runs well on anything that isn't a Rapsberry Pi.

The base game would run on my phone.

Horizons is obviously more demanding, but yeah. I play at 1080p 120fps locked with almost no drops on a GTX 1070 with a few settings turned down a bit. In comparison, I play on an i5-7300HQ with a vanilla GTX1050 at 60fps on medium settings. An equivalent desktop would cost you about £350. Spend a bit more and you should be able to run the game at ultra/1080p/60fps with no issues at all.

Price of PC if you want to play Elite Dangerous well is under $500. Price of PC which could play Star Citizen well (as if it was worth paying) $5000. :D

i7 4750 4 core GF 840 2 GB 16 GB ram FPS landing on the system was 25 to 35 FPS Astroids was around 25 to 35 FPS Regular Flying around 55 FPS
Note I had a 1tb Hybrid Hard drive.

No best idea for Star Citizen is to wait until it out of Alpha/Beta Then buy a system. You save $4500.

Elite Dangerous + Horizons runs perfectly fine on my top-of-the-range computer... from 2011.

I run a i7-2600K processor with a GTX-580. No issues whatsoever unless I'm also running a lot of stuff in the background.

When you are running the game Click Ctrl F and let see the FPS.

Not much!

If you look around for good second hand parts at CEX (webuy.com), you can grab some tech with a 2 year warranty, usually cheap if you go for older models. I got a GTX 770 GPU for about £75.

Plays ED perfectly. Except for V-Sync. It hated that. Lol

Do not forget that if Frontier develops planets with atmosphere, fauna, flora and cities, it will need a few more resources to play on the highest settings.

Ye I ran the 580 on 3440 x 1440 with zero frame rate isuues pretty well maxed out. I5 4570 cpu I think it was but I agree not particularly demanding
