Modes Is attacking clean players (not npcs) in Open harassment?

What's your opinion on this question today:

Is attacking other players (not npcs) in Open "harassment," if those players are clean, law abiding, and not attacking you?

Note: While similar questions have been posted in the forums previously, I was wondering what everyone thought about this now that we've had some time to experience the results of FDev's C&P changes.

Obviously irl if you hurt someone minding their own business obeying the law, it definitely IS harassment.

But is it harassment to do the same in a game?

Also, if Elite is meant to be a fun game, should players in Open have the option to opt into (or out of) PvP?

Or, if Elite is meant to be realistic, shouldn't murder in game result in life imprisonment?

What's your thoughts?

For me, attacking clean players in Open who are obviously not engaging in combat is like a interrupting a public chess game by knocking the table over.

While not prevented by design, it is harassing / greifing / annoyingly bad behavior which I believe leads most players to play in Solo or PG, but that's just one player's opinion!

/sigh....

No.

Even your example isn't harassment.

/bigger sigh....

Now if you'd kindly do some research on the game, the option of being a "criminal" (including "Murderer") was always part of the plan.
Plenty of times Frontier have said that is a valid career choice in game.

So if you don't want to be content for someone else, feel free to join a Private Group or play Solo - it's kind of why they are there.

There are many legit reasons to attack a non-wanted player. Power play. BGS play. Piracy. It would be great if you could actually extort credits from other players. PKing just to PK - doesn't really make sense to me from the sim perspective.

Buuuut FDEV doesn't really have the tools to make distinctions between the different kinds of PKing, and the current C&P is just silly. I'm going to put a boot on your car for your traffic tickets bub. I'm going to put a boot on your car for murder bub. Try a 48 hour logout timer for pking a single clean non-hostile player in a non anarchy system. You might see a change in behavior.

Murderer as a career choice doesn't pay the bills...

This thread is harassment!

I mean c'mon, one thread about this topic is fine, but after the second, third, fourth....

So?
Not everyone chooses a career that pays well, some folks choose careers for the fun value.

Assassin - that pays well.

Murder for murder's sake does not pay at all. I could see it as having a sim value if you got the mats that spilled out of the ship like with npcs, but mats don't pop out of player ships.

Other than the troll value (which isn't sim consistent), pking clean players without a PP, BGS, faction, piracy reason - doesn't seem to make much sense in the career context.

I can absolutely understand why people enjoy it, have no moral objection to it at all. It just isn't valid to say it's a career. It doesn't really matter though of course. FDEV doesn't give a rodent's backside as to what makes sense in a career context.

Not harassment.

Game worlds have rules opens rules clearly allow what op is objecting to.

Drawing parallels with rl is silly.

No PvP opt in in open thanks, you need a pg cmdr.

There are no rules of engagement so literally anything goes, for reference i've never attacked anyone in open in 4 years and don't really see that changing.

You completely ignored that people can choose a "career" for fun value.
Whether you like it being called a "career" or not is irrelevant, it's lack of credits is also irrelevant.
As long as the person enjoys it and keeps doing it - it is their chosen "career".

Now what should be the topic of discussion is, how can players be a career Bounty Hunter (of player criminals), when the criminals can jump to Solo to hide after their crime sprees.

No, its not harrassment.

No offence when I say this. But grow a pair.

It's a game with GUNS in it. You can't complain that someone shot at you and expect people to take it seriously.

No

Yes

/ thread.
Looks like stalemate :D

To elaborate my short answer a bit :
It can't be harassment if it's allowed by FD, and at the end of the day it's "just" a part of the game.
By clicking open one consents basically to being shot at.

I am no fan of mindless ganking myself, but as long as it's not repeated and/or combined with insulting or other things like that,
it's not harassment. And repeated in this context is not "more than once attacked at a CG", because one CAN oppose a CG or AX or stuff for reasons.
If you don't like that, switch to another mode, that's what they are for, that's what I do, that's what everyone on my friendlist does if he's not in the mood
(hint: there are PvPers on my friendlist, too)

I used to play Open. The prospect of getting pirated was a thrill I was actually looking forward to, but that's not what happened. So now I play Solo or PG. The point of my first post was to illustrate that we all have different opinions and all are equally as valid.
