After having my share of problems with the DK2 (bad hdmi cable, no tracking, not knowing about the wscript thing), I was able to get everything working in ED. Despite the less than stellar resolution, it was like having some kind of religious experience. I swear I heard angels singing when I left the dock and made my way towards the slot. Absolutely incredible experience. The scale of every thing is so much bigger, but also a bit darker with less definition. Sitting in the cockpit of a Cobra, I actually felt that those skinny little arms and legs were my own.

After taking a tour around LP98-132's sun, I did a bit of pirate bashing. The enemy contrails are much harder to see, but over all sense of awareness is much greater. I only had about an hour to enjoy it before heading back to the Coriolis station, but by that time I was already feeling some eye strain. I don't think that I could play for more than 2 hours without getting a serious migraine.

So to sum it up, ED+VR= crack.

Dogfighting has never been so much fun. Its a thrill to look up and sideways to see your enemy flying about. And its so exhilarating whenever they zoom by and you see their smoke trails.

But then again. 4K at 90 or 120hz will require some hardware! :)

Here's a simulating of how 4K display will look like in ED:

And here's the 1080p (to compare)
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/27709072/oculus/pentile_sim_1080.png

And 1440p
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/27709072/oculus/pentile_sim_1440.png

Might want to open up all in 3 tabs so you can switch between them quickly so you see the difference.. again its only a test. and not by me.. :)

That looks quite believable. certainly the 1080p one looks close to the mark.

whilst it is true 4k @ 90hz will require hardware which simply does not exist yet, there would be nothing to stop you running ED at 1440P or even 1080p on a 4k screen and still getting the advantage of the higher res panel.

that being said, I will be stunned if CV1 is 4k (though would welcome it so long as it was not too expensive and didn't delay the launch)

1440P seems like a nice compromise for CV1 imo, and then maybe 12-18months down the line re-evaluate for CV2.

it is clear to me that the 1080p pentile display is not quite there for consumer release...... but its not a million miles away imo.

The 1080p doesn't actually look that bad in the screenshot, I wonder if having played games when the average resolution was 200"p" or 480"p" makes one more tolerant to the 'low' DK2 resolution.

If Oculus stay true to form, then the CV1 will be 1440p. DK2 uses a Galaxy note 3 screen and the note 4 has been announced to have a 1440p screen and will be released in a few months. They will already have contacts in place in Samsung so i think it is a very high probability of them using the Note 4 screen for CV1.

Oculus DK2 led me the way to Elite

To be honest, i had not heard of Elite dangerous until some weeks before my DK2 arrived (August 4th). In the anticipation of the Oculus i watched alot of Streams and Videos about the DK2 and ED turned up in every second video (Cymatic Bruce i.e.).

So i bought the game some days before the DK2 arrived. And i am not sure if i am more happy about the DK2 or about finding to elite. This game has given me the best gaming-experience in many years.

Frontiers opportunity
I hope Frontier is aware of the fact that many players come to Elite because it is one of the current "Oculus reference experiences" and that they will use the opportunity to exploit this advantage.
The fact that support and setup of the rift with ED is cumbersome at the moment will certainly keep some people off.
I hope they have some manpower working on improving the DK2 support.

Short verdict on the DK2:
Experience is awesome, but the resolution disappoints. Still, this will be fixed with CV1 and it is definetly the (only) way i want to play games in the future.

DK2 with Elite:
I use it all the time, except for the occasion where i tried Slopeys trading tool. It is a definite advantage and i feel handicapped without it.
Yes, it is hard to read text and ships and stations look very grainy but it is worth it. Downsampling has not helped on this matter.

I've added a poll for you guys to register your ownership etc.

Let me know if it needs editing etc. :D

I replied (DK2) although I'm still waiting for it - but it's paid up for and judging by /r/oculus I should be getting it within a week or so.

Edit: Never owned or used a DK1 so this will be my first modern VR experience - straight in to E D.

Once you have it all up and running. Check the ED/OR thread for tips etc.

ED will be the 1st game to try out. :D

When you want to try a frew other things out, head over tho this thread Oculus Rift Games to try out

Love my DK2.

Proud Dk2 user here.

The only problems I have with ED and the DK2 is trying to use the Galactic map to find a location that isn't listed by your nav console (jumping from LP 98-132 to LP 64-194 for example) but, it does encourage you to find alternative routes, and I've been to a few more places than I would have if I had flown the more direct path.

Apart from that the level of immersion you receive is incredible and docking with a big ship is so much easier when you can actually gauge your distance to something more accurately than you can on a flat screen.

Simply put, I'm loving it.

VR all the way. Have the DK1 and a DK2 on pre order for the September batch. After 40-years of video gaming on monitors, I wouldn't be bothering any more without VR.

My baby is on it's way soon! :D

DK2 here as well. Has Frontier said anything about including enhanced DK2 support in the next update? I keep looking for word in all of the different forums on the DK2 and Elite but haven't seen anything. e.g. SDK .4 support, and some concession for the fonts to be more readable.

I'm still very much a beginner in the game (haven't played for long trading stints or anything) but sometimes I go for a fly in it just for a "joyride" in the closest thing I'll ever come to flying a spaceship...

DK1 currently. DK2 SooN!

Just in reply to some of the earlier comments, i can't seem to play anything on a monitor anymore.. 2D has been spoilt now...

I'm disabled and spend a lot of time in bed. I'm hoping I can use the DK2 while on my back to get some much needed time in the game. Ordered first week of June, check my email a few dozen times a day ;)

Pro tip. GET A DECENT JOYSTICK

It makes a huge difference when your inside the headset. You can't see you controls so a keyboard is almost impossible to use properly.

If you an afford it get a HOTAS (Hands on throttle and stick) set up. I use the X-52 pro and it has more than enough buttons so I never have to take my hands of the controls to bumble around for a key.

Also best part is the X-52 looks identical to the one in the game so if you set it up in the same place it will look/feel perfect and move with you. It's amazing! Everyone loves that feature! :D It just feels right

Worth EVERY penny

DK1 user here. I only spent about 10 minutes playing without a Rift. DK1 setup was a breeze as long as you remember to plug in the Rift first and start the game second. I would much rather be in a pixelated but completely immersive and comfortable VR environment than a high-res "normal screen." Or triple screen (or more), though I have only tried those in arcades.

I see enjoyable gaming experiences for both VR and multi-screen. But I am in the VR camp. Maybe we should start a VR team in game. I don't know what the retail price for the CV Rift will be, but I suspect it will be less than 3x high def monitors, and in my opinion a better experience. But I have not tried this build in a multi-screen setup and they both have merits and should be treated with equal respect, and this is just one person's experience.

I was a bit skeptical and concerned about the low resolution of DK1 and not being able to read text, but am actually very impressed. I can read most text, almost everything now that I am used to it, but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

Maybe simply give an option to increase the font size in-game? That solved lots of problems for me in other Rift DK1 games, like Minecraft. For ED, I am using an Xbox360 controller, and the biggest issue for me is switching between gamepad (I will soon order a proper joystick) for normal flight operations and keyboard for communication/menu.

Absolutely zero nausea for me. Flight control/stabilization is a big part of this. I like how games like Lunar Flight and Vendetta Online have options to turn off flight assist permanently (not just a temporary toggle as long as you hold the button down). It really adds to the immersion in game, but also can add to nausea and loss of control. Maybe give the option for either flight assist on or off as default, and a temporary toggle for turning it off (or on in my prefered setup).

If devs read this I have a couple more constructive criticisms. Bear in mind I have only played for less than two weeks, so I am probably missing some options. and have no idea what I'm ranting about.

1) I really like how the game Lunar Flight uses head orientation combined with gamepad up/down/left/right/A/B/X/Y/etc to navigate menus, and maybe I am wrong, but I think you can do this in flight without totally messing up your ship controls. It is very intuitive. Elite Dangerous beta nails the virtual screen pop-ups (similar to Lunar Flight), but navigating them (for me) requires taking your hands off the gamepad and then finding the keyboard, which is frustrating and often imprecise when you are essentially blind to the real world using a Rift. For games using just WSAD for controls and no gamepad/joystick it is less of an issue because you have a point of reference (WSAD) without looking at your hands. But if you go from gamepad or joystick to mouse and keyboard without taking off the Rift, it leads to a lot of missed keystrokes. In Lunar Flight, there are fewer commands, but I think the same button on an Xbox controller can have different functions whether you are manning the vessel or navigating menus. For example, in Elite, I have D-pad down set for landing gear (probably not optimal but that is how it is) but when I am docked (or still in space) I want to use the D-pad for navigating the menus I am looking at.

I could ramble on for hours about this, but in short it would be nice if there was an option for contextual control schemes (maybe there is... again I am new here). I mean when you are looking at a window like local travel destinations, it would be nice to use up-down-left-right on the left analog stick or D-pad of an Xbox controller, even though it is already programmed for pitch and roll, landing gear, target select, hyperdrive or other flight commands.

2) The starmap is very difficult to navigate in the Rift (at least for me). Also due to having to switch to keyboard

3) Communication with other players is difficult in the Rift. I ignore both hostile and friendly messages in multiplayer online because I am too focused on getting from point A to B, and it is too hard to switch from the Rift to finding your keyboard position... I see the VR keyboard to the left. It would be nice if you could hook that up with real keystrokes and maybe even hand/finger tracking if you wear something like a power glove, or even something like a Razer Hydra... Maybe I should get a microphone setup, but I'm not that serious about my gaming (yet).

4) Maybe us Rifters should start up an alliance. It would be interesting to see if using VR actually gives an advantage in PVP/overall gameplay. It has certainly raised the bar in gaming for me.

5) This is an Xbox control issue not a Rift issue, but it seems many of the throttle controls (left analog, LT, RT, etc) are either all on or all off? Maybe it is just how I've set things up.

6) Last point, what is the status of bringing back the old Elite games in VR? I never played them, though I did play vector arcade games as a kid which had a similar visual depth as the Rift experience, but without head tracking or a million buttons and keyboard and multiplayer.

First /post off. Hope it is constructive. TONS of potential here. The game is brilliant and I'm sure it will be fantastic when final release comes!

I have a DK1, but I will be buying the CV1 when it finally happens. At the moment, the sense of immersion is good with the DK1, but I can't read a thing , so I went back to playing on my monitor.
