Viperism

2 x C4 Railguns
2 x C2 Missile Launchers
2 x Heatsick Launchers

Sneak up behind someone, unload everything -> target destroyed. Reload costs are steep though.

The Viper is a great ship and as Dead Fred pointed out, I think it is nicely balanced, giving it more range/cargo would potentially encroach on the roles of other ships - granted it would be nice to have more range and cargo but its all about the balance...

That said I do need to pry my ass out of the Vipers cockpit chair and move on to something else....

Im using a Viper with a 4 canon set up 2 C2 and 2 C4's its epic and demolishing things in short order. However its short range and low cargo means its not going to my craft of choice for the long haul Im waiting to see how the ASP is when its ready or it will be make some money on the cargo haulers and jump into a Cobra and into the black wild yonder.

Please make the Asp a good one FD, just for me :)

If the weapons and handling are good and the jump range/ cargo space is rubbish, then I think that is a fair compromise...

This made me smile because I remember the numpty who recently claimed that the Vipers range was a "serious/fatal design flaw" in the game. It's obviously designed as a relatively local craft, and has been pointed out you can get better range by not loading it down with heavy systems.

I like the C4 cannons and C2 beam lasers. I know beams aren't popular but I seem to do well with them compared to pulse. They are hot if you're not careful but the cannons are quite cool for a C4 weapon.

And you can always fit it with 4xc2 and only reinforced armor.
This is still a very nice ship with less "caged in" feeling and (depending on weapons) less weapon heat generation.
I flew it this way for quite some time...it works :)

Well I went to I Bootis and purchased a Viper which took an absolute age, about 3-4 minutes loading to change ship!

But boy was it worth it. I decided to go with 4xC2 weapons and chose 2x Pulse and 2x burst lasers (pulse to tickle the shields at distance and burst to bring the pain when I'm sure my shot will hit) 2x HS launchers and no armour.

Went to Eranin combat zone to test 'er out and WOW, My shots were on target more often, stuff was dying plenty quick enough (didn't come up against anything BIG but Cobras were dispatched with remarkable efficiency) sidewinders barely got a chance to realise they were under attack! Turns out the heatsink launchers were unnecessary.

I've got a jump radius of just over 7ly which is just about manageable but the speed and agility are addictive!

Well my experience so far is that a Cobra beats out a Viper in a 1 on 1 but both are moreorless equally good at toasting Eagles or Sideys. However the Vipers is much better vs an Anaconda than a Cobra is.

Ultimately it comes down to pilot skill but i find dogfighting in the Viper a heck of a lot more fun than the Cobra.

I currently have 2 class 1 gimbaled burst lasers and 2 class 4 cannons.

Cant put much else on it or it quickly becomes useless due to the current extreme jump range to weight falloff.

Wow, must have been a bad viper pilot (npcs and high lag doesn't count). Theoretically the viper has just the right balance of speed and agility to tail a cobra indefinitely. I know I've never had a hard time against a single cobra except that one guy who rammed me.

If it could only be more use in terms of coverage. Choosing a Viper essentially cuts you off from a large portion of the night sky unless you constantly want to unload weapons or swap ships.

If an option comes that allows multiple ship ownership, I'd be all over the Viper. Until then, back to the Ana for me..

If you only use C2 weapons, maybe 4 C2 cannons, you can jump damn near anywhere. You may have to burn off a bit of fuel for the longest jumps, but there shouldn't be anything in the current sphere that you can't reach.

Currently the viper is the best combat ship, but who knows what future updates will bring. The cobra may end up being quite a beast depending on how ship modifications and upgrades pan out. It has the tonnage to hold more or heavier accessories than the viper.

I only use the standard light weight hull. I have never seen a reason to upgrade it. If my shields get low, I just boost away to recover.
