∞ probes?

And FD ignored it. They seem to have shifted from 'arguably tedious but 'realistic' to gameplay-focussed'. The new explo system is a great example. If you want to fully map a system it is now both much faster, and much more engaging. I've mapped tons of systems but eventually couldn't do it anymore. A system with 50 bodies would consist of about 30 seconds of steering in total, and 30 minutes of waiting. Now it'll be five minutes of gameplay.

Five minutes of gameplay but if you are a completionist and want to map the individual planets then it'll take quite a while to explore systems.

Nothing wrong with that at all mind but its not my idea of engaging gameplay.

Hearing them say they made the probe count infinite for the sake of having fun put a huge smile on my face, not just because I love the idea of infinite anything in a game, but because it will get under the skin of the sorts of forumites I like to see displeased.

Then you can skip it: mapping is a new layer. So you can do the old stuff faster in a better way, plus you can go the extra mile with more new gameplay if you want. And 'probing 50 bodies' versus 'eyeballing 50 bodies' for stuff on them is a difference of, I dont know, months.

At first it felt weird to have infinite probes. But the initial proposal was 200 probes, which would be far too short as if you're going on mapping planets you'll be constantly out of probes, ending up spending more time scavenging to make probes than actually using them. This would mean that, to avoid this, the probe ammo would have to be very high anyway, so they ended up making it infinite.

The only "issue" I see with having infinite probes is that it makes skill useless, as I won't feel the need or care about "getting good" at shooting probes, as I can simply lob more probes until it's done (and after engineering I'll be able to carpet-bomb probes), regardless if I'm being a probe sharpshooter, or blindly throwing probes.

No biggie for me anyway. It's certainly better to have infinite probes, than the initially proposed 200 probes. And the fact eyeballing planets will be finally gone makes it all worthwhile.

Bryan. I like you.

So did they say there was a money bonus for using the most efficient number of probes? So that we don't just shoot a bunch of random ones and get the 100% anyway?

There actually seems to be a reward if you are "efficient" with your probing. But i'm not sure to have grasped what it actually is. Probably more credits

Yeah... they said that there is an efficiency bonus related to planetary mappings, as in how many probes you use. I guess that would be money when turning in the data.

Considering space is infinite, then if you want to probe space you need an infinite supply.

That will be my contribution to the lore on space probes.

I think it’s excellent, soon we will all be talking about systems using golf terms. “Grrr EAFOTs YA3B7a was a par 5 HMC and I double bogied it and fluffed my mapping bonus”

I am intrigued if Multicrew can all do the discovery stuff at the same tine, or if new role of scannerwill come into affect?

I am fine with unlimited probes.

However, I still want some reason to stop every now and the and replenish material stocks by mining asteroids or driving the SRV.
OK, the later might be necessary for jumponium.
But asteroid mining does only yield low grade mats. I would love to have an incentive for this, too.
It's really just about meaningful interruptions of the otherwise (albeit now more interesting) routine - and the beautiful new visuals in those rings are well worth the effort!

(I know, I know. I can always enter those rings just for the visuals. And I will do so. But a game-play reason for doing so would be nice - in my(!) opinion at least. One has to be careful here; I really don't want to force my opinion/play-style on all the other explorers!)
