∞ probes?

TBH I don't care about the lore explanation, I care more about the gameplay and having unlimited probes removes the challenge from the mapping mini-game. Everyone will literally start bombing planets with probes.
That's why they have the efficiency bonus.
It's just a credit bonus feature. And Exploration is not about Credits!
"I want a challenge"
"There's an efficiency challenge that gives you a credit bonus"
"I don't want that challenge"

That's fine. Just get rid of the ∞ symbol, it's a bit pointless.
Kinda like having ∞ next to our lasers so we know that laser "ammo" is infinite.

Agreed. There was a vertical bar above that symbol - was that meant to visually represent the number of probes left, like a fuel gauge? If so, make it go away as well.

I could see that potentially still having a use as a "charge bar" that limits how many you can launch at once.
Honestly not sure if there was an in-flight limit. time to go rewatch the stream... :)

I'm telling ya, they are balls of modulated energy (affected by magnetic fields, thus the ability to curve to the back side) that 'light up' a section of the planet for our ship's sensors, just like active sonar on a submarine. And thus they are infinite, as long as our ship has power.

While some of the nuances of the science are above my pay grade, it makes way more sense than an infinite number of physical FSD-equipped "probes" - rockets, darts, whatever they supposedly are.

My mind is made up - this is the way it is! :p

Honestly if infinite is set in stone then I like this idea
I wish FD cared as much about versimilitude as you do I think I shall steal it ;)

Come on Kofeyh, it's the best bit! It's why I arrive coffee in one hand and tub of popcorn in the other.

+1

I said it was the forums. I didn't say anything about the entertainment value. ;)

You must really hate pulse lasers. ;)

People trying to cling on to the scientific plausibility of a game where teleportation, black hole surfing and space windshields exist is getting kind of tiring tbh.

It's a videogame, half the mechanics in Elite don't make the slightest sense, deal with the fact that our ships will haul infinite probes.

For what is worth I'd also love to see infinite (or reusable) limpets and a universal controller on every ship too. :)

You can't speak for me and you do not represent me.
Efficiency bonus is not a challenge for me because I've got nothing to lose with that (ref. exploration is not about money).
I'm still coeherent.

Say your opinion about the topic instead.

You're pretty happy to speak for all of the 1.x players? I dunno. Maybe we see what Beta actually delivers? It's a crazy idea. Might work tho.

I think people find this an arbitrary challenge that feels as something to justify the changes.

With limited ammo each shot has value, and that skill that gave you that shot has value.

Having an 'efficiency bonus' when there is no real purpose for that bonus to begin with makes it feel artificial. Maybe its this factor that sits awkwardly.

Of course you could get rid of the infinite symbol, and remove the challenge levels, but then you are left with probes for the sake of it- maybe thats the ideal situation- these probes are used for planets, scanning rings, deep space etc just make them like an unglamorous tool that fades into the background.

I don't think it's a metter of realism... I said many times in the past that Elite is sometimes victim of FD sake for realism. It's a sci-fi game, let's enjoy the fiction.
I'm perfectly fine with players that want unlimited probes. That's why I suggested a compromise that would make everyone happy and covers also non horizon players:

If they're infinite... Why is there a reward for using a couple less?

Because Frontier is trying to not have it become a soulless pointless exercise backed by probe starvation and the need to collect endless tokens (materials) to enable it all?

You're right, why wouldn't anyone want more of the same thing people have endlessly lamented.

They are just trying to keep it from getting boring and just an utter grind fest. Good on them. The point is to improve the experience. Not make it another ladder to climb.

Ok: I'm glad that for each planet FDev have provided a "minimum probes par" challenge that I can aim to achieve, thereby giving me an incentive to use skill in probing instead of carpet bombing :)
