The dedicated Star Citizen thread is forever getting spammed with Derek Smart discussion, invariably which moderators then remove. So please put your Derek Smart Star Citizen related chat here... ;)

Better it does not go well here than spamming up the SC thread IMHO ;)

Makes no difference, Dr Smart's been set up as the official antichris so that's just how it is. Trying to separate them now is like trying to unscramble an egg.

I only came here as I noticed a thread about SC and one Mr Smart. I had to google who the hell is Derek Smart and why should I care. Oh thats Mr Smart and no I shouldnt care.

This "why should I care" is something that comes often about him. And the answer is basically, well, you shouldn't particularly care. He's just one person like another giving his thoughts about the game, with a clear negative slant. He's just part of the real-life-social-media-mmo that SC is first and foremost at this point in time. Yes, his name or his posts might come up often. That's because he seems to have some issues with his games not being as successful as he'd like, and therefore tends to enjoy slamming the "competition" if he spots an opportunity to do so (and well, let's be honest, SC makes it easy). He's making some interesting points (whether you deem him successful or not, he developed and published games and makes a living out of it so he does have some expert insight in the domain that shouldn't be dismissed), he's making some bad ones, he's making a lot of hit and miss predictions, and like any other online source, you might or might not enjoy his stuff.

But that, in itself, wouldn't have been enough to make him the online equivalent of a B-grade celebrity. Somehow, the good folks behind SC didn't know the Streisand effect was a thing and revoked his pledge to get rid of him on their forums. The result is what you see now, he's even more vocal, and due to the amount of regular content he publishes about the topic, has gained some sort of fame in the social circles around the game. I mean, there was a time on the SC subreddit where they talked about him like Voldemort with "you know who" and "he who shall not be named". You can't make up that stuff. Even the folks who think he's meaningless treat him like some sort of mystic foe whose name itself can spell doom.

That's all there is to it really. He's just one person like all of us, making some good and bad points. He's just more zealous about it, to the point where if one is reading about SC, it's likely you'll end up seeing some of his posts linked or referenced. Ideally, his posts should be discussed, as opposed to his supposed secret agenda or personality, but well, he's been turned into a scarecrow so...

If you take a lot of money from some very gullible people and then don't deliver, pointing them at somebody else works. They key here is gullibility.

Nothing that's gone wrong with SC is actually his idea, fault or doing. He can't even influence it he's just watching like the rest of us.

Yet he's the universal lightning rod for all of the blame. That's why random internet people saying controversial things like "have they made the thing I bought for money and they said would be out in 2014" get called Derek Smart.

Its funny but its completely bonkers, luckily he seems to really enjoy it.

I guess he is not making much from games these days - you gotta do what you gotta do for a living. :)

Citation for this claim? ie: What's DS' income from his games?

And at least DS isn't selling JPGs of space ships for thousands of dollars. Let's repeat that! Thousands of dollars for a JPG of a spaceship in a game!

At the very very best, should SC get developed to such a degree that people can fly these ships in game, it's akin to someone having paid thousands of dollars to fly a Cutter in ED... Does that sound like a fair and reasoned model?

Now add to that, if SC doesn't get completed to such a degree that these ships costing thousands of dollars have any significant gameplay in the game?

Now add to that, if SC doesn't get completed to such a degree that these ships costing thousands of dollars are not even in the game?

Now add to that, if it turns out SC basically fails due to poor management, and indeed CR knew for quite a while (years) it was unlikely for SC to make to completion as pitched? Yet he continued on selling JPGs for thousands of dollars?

Now that's a lot of ifs, buts and maybes. But I'd suggest DS at least is holding SC accountable at a sensible level given they are selling JPGS for thousands of dollars, for a game which after all this time is looking less and less likely to reach what was pitched by CR.

In before lock.
Correction - You're actually in after the lock, and then the unlock :)

Anway, this thread is an attemp to get the Derek Smart spam out of the Star Citizen thread. A moderator suggested a dedicated thread so here it is.

If it means the Star Citizen thread gets less Derek Smart spam, great!

Now I'm confused - this post is mainly about SC, but it's in the DS thread?

Anyone knows what is the stateoif his latest project "Line if Defense"?

It's "Line of Defense" and last time I saw it, it was a hot mess. Notably, many of the things we take for granted like weapon sway, reload animations, etc. were not present in the fps portion of the game. Buildings basically just consisted of large indoor areas connected via hallways. It reminded me a lot of "Battlecruiser Millenium" and related products which were grandiose in scope, but each individual part (space flight, atmosphere flight, fps combat) was very basic and sometimes barely functional. Space combat was among the most functional parts, which is good, but yeah... it wasn't great. So I would not get my hopes up regarding his latest game.

However, that doesn't mean anyone should automatically dismiss his opinions. Quite often he overshoots, but he knows a thing or two about programming. And about doing projects with way too big of a scope.

Unfortunately after some consideration I'm going to close this thread.

Reason why there's the potential for Doxxing an individual which as everyone knows is against the forum rules.

Sorry but there it is.
