When I was a very tender age, I tried a star trek game on a PET called Wartrek, which had a difficulty level named 'BACKS TO THE WALLS LADS'. Had to ask my Dad to explain that one.
I don't worry too much about whiny minorities who want to change the game to suit their own agendas.
Even though they do seem to be the most vocal, and do a lot of shouting about how they want the game changed to suit themselves. Either for open only, or PvE only yada yada....

They close ranks and mob you pretty quickly if you mention any preference for Open or a tolerance for PvP - some even hound you through PMs - but there's no need to feel intimidated by them.
While I've been known to pop into open now and then just to check out players ships, I don't do it very often. And while I have no interest in PvP, I have no issue with others engaging in it. Why should I?
As for those more vocal types demanding only one mode for all players, well, I tried engaging with some a ways back but learned that they really aren't interested in listening to anyone's ideas other than their own. So I figured that I should return the favor and not pay too much attention to their ideas.
Perhaps it could be renamed Annoyance mode
While some folks do enjoy a good debate just for debate's sake, I find that very frustrating. I'm more interested in conversing in search of solutions. And as I and others here are not in charge of making changes to the game, nothing we suggest makes a bit of difference.
Therefor, non-engagement is my only self-defense mechanism. After having spent 9 years in the Corps I can be very proficient at throwing insults around. But those few who I might engage are not worth getting throw off the forums for.
As I put in the original post at the start of this thread I play in Solo or PG, that is my preference. I do not care about what happens in Open, but I am still allowed to make comments or give my opinion on any thread posted on the forum, just like you. It seems like you have taken this thread more seriously than i intended.
So if I have caused any form of upset I will apologise to all.
After reading yet another thread about another player totally un-prepared and disappointed at his short lived experience in an Explorer ship getting pulled out of supercruise by a Combat ship and getting a rebuy screen for the trouble.........

I have to admit I am curious as to who you are referring to. And no one should hound anyone through PMs, that is wrong on so many levels.
Exactly my experience as well. In 6 months I've been ganked once, and it was during my first CG in a brand new Python with no clue of what I was walking into.
