Any news on merging limpet controllers?

Maybe multiple related controllers could be merged into one with a mode switch function without too many balance issues. Though I think one universal controller for all limpet functions would be too much, right? Prospecting/collection could become one thing for miners, repair/fuel transfer could be combined pretty well for rescue operations. I think hatch breakers should remain their own thing though.

Had you not posted this, I would have. I don't believe there should be a need for 20 different limpet controllers when one with a "mode switch" will do.

Ain't NO ONE got enough slots for that.

This is very high on my Christmas wish list: ;)

A size 3 Universal Limpet controller, containing the hardware to control one limpet, the software to control all types and 4T of storage for synthesized (or bought) limpets.
Any active limpets would be destroyed when the mode is changed.

I always feel bad for those poor npc pilots who ran out of fuel at the edge of the bubble. I'm never able to help them because there is no objective reason to carry a fuel limpet controller unless you're a fuel rat. And that's a big shame.

Have you ever taken a close look at the limpets? They are almost as big as a person.

I'm not saying they aren't. I'm saying they shouldn't be that big. That a collector limpet is as big as the objects it collects is just ridiculous. It's like a tugboat being as big as the ship it moves around.

Steve Kirby said they were looking into it here
"
Design Limpet Controller Bay Module to prevent player having to use up too many slots in ship holding limpet controllers."

I also remember Sandro mentioning in in a live chat, which I think was after this, saying that it would be similar to hanger bay slots.

Sure hope it's in this release!

Yeah, that's my impression of it all too.

Seems like everybody's in favour of tidying up the issues related to limpets in various ways so it's kind of surprising that there's been no firm information about it been released.

Will there be a livestream on mining?

Seems like the perfect place to announce this sort of thing.

In saying that I'd also not be surprised if it didn't make this update, despite it being a perfect change to add along with the new mining gameplay.

This made me think about a different concept of multi-purpose controllers (and I already put it on the suggestion-board): Two (or more) multipurpose controllers to pair functionality - one controller primarily programs collectors (and repair limpets as secondary function), the other prospectors (and fuel transfer limpets) for example.
As the interface is right now (but that might change in the near future), there is no easy way to switch functions for limpets. Probably the simplest solution might be to disable and restart a controller and it boots with a new control mode. That would be rather inconvenient if you disable the prospector to switch to the collector limpet, the prospector-benefit would be disabled as well if I am not mistaken.

Tugboats don't move ships at high speeds, nor do they have to move in a vacuum in 3 dimensions. If anything, I'd say that being able to nimbly move 1-tonne canisters in space automatically on a 1-tonne disposable platform that can be assembled with some iron filings and nickel powder, no special equipment and very little training is a pretty mean feat.

We'd need a solution that's compatible with existing ship layouts, including ships that might be out in deep space. But that should be straightforward.

Perhaps limpet controllers could have a number of "controller cards" based on size (1 for size 1, 2 for size 3, 3 for size 5, 4 for size 7), which can be installed or swapped during outfitting (just as you can change the SLF's that a hangar will produce). Existing controllers simply have multiples of the same card. And if each controller also has limpet storage space equal to half an equivalent cargo rack, ships already carrying limpets as cargo will get some of them shunted into limpet storage, gaining some unused cargo space.

I get the impression from the trailer that prospectors are going to be disappearing, with the FSS taking over their duties. If they are still required to be used to get extra drop rate, despite not being required to see rock content, that will be disappointing.
