I know FDev keeps saying "Chapter 4 is For Free" but

Can't make an update that fundamentally changes the core game as a paid update, no matter how the LEP people would wish to think otherwise...

Next years update however will be adding completely new 'things' to the game, and thus rightly justifies a price tag - and LEP buyers can whoop with glee.

Source? 4.0 is already going to be free, which would make charging for 4.x a bit odd. At present rate 4.x is going to take us well into 2020.

It's common knowledge there is a paid expansion next year. No one know what it IS yet, but it was announced in a very long .. well, announcement just recently.

I tend to disregard any announcements (from anyone, not just fdev) that are over six moths old. I've just gotten stung too many times. If there is something from early to mid 2018 I'll believe it, otherwise whoever said it is probably hoping we'll just forget it was ever mentioned.

It's free for a number of reasons. First, there are lots of changes to the base game, and it needs to change for everyone obviously, no matter if they pay or not. Second, this year it's all been free updates because they realised they needed to fix the game and remove a bunch of "placeholders" (as some people call them), instead of just adding new stuff like atmospheric landings, which are easier to charge for. Third, had they not done this after the community got burned with the (2 year long!) Horizons season, I reckon the game wouldn't be where it is today.

Eh? They've never said any of that.

We do know there's a paid 'major milestone' expansion in the works, and it won't be seasonal, but that's about it.

We don't really know if some freebie updates will fill in the gap or when the DLC will actually drop yet.

(It might be cool if they concentrate primarily on big core freebies like 3.3 inbetween 'milestone' paid DLC, now they've dumped seasons. Could be more coherent. Guess we'll see :))

The next expansion, once Beyond is over, will be a paid expansion, as others have said.

We do have one exciting piece of news to share that to date, we have not shared with our community. A while ago, our development went from pre-production into full production on our next major milestone of Elite development.

What that means in the simplest terms is that the team are actively working on the next major landmark which takes us into our next era for Elite. We aren’t going to be ready to talk about or announce any details for quite a while yet, it is early in the development and there is still a long way to go, but I can say that this is something that will be scheduled to release a considerable time after the final update in the Beyond series. We will have more details on exactly what this means and how the era will roll out after the release of Beyond – Chapter Four, but this does mark some exciting next steps and a continued commitment to the long term vision for the game and our community.

Naturally, there will be community questions that might come up from this information. We aren’t going to be ready to talk about what method or model the content will be. What we can say is that it’s expected to be a major milestone in the history of Elite and will be paid content. Lifetime Expansion owners will obviously receive the content as part of their pass.

Disregarding statements you've never read isn't really a good idea now is it...

I know FDev keeps saying "Chapter 4 is For Free" but, from what I've seen so far ( Exploration & BGS), I would be prepared to pay for this upgrade.

Can't wait to see what they've done to Mining, and then there's Squadrons.

This is a fabulous update!

Free implies choice - they could have charged for it but magnanimously chose not to; we could have opted not to have it but because it's free it's a no-brainer. There is no adoption choice here, if we want to continue to play we must upgrade.

But you could buy stuff in the shop if you want to pay extra :)

the changes that come and is for everyone, I believe that have to do they have updated their Cobra engine, to make the changes possible,
I also think when Powerplay came they wanted to do squadrons but delayed because of their Cobra engine was not good enough for it

A Frontier thread on the Cobra engine, would be very interesting.

I wish Q4 update being free and addressing core issues in ED see people’s faith in FDev and ED’s future restored and saltiness decreased. Beyond will end on a positive note I think.

From FDev’s part, it kinda makes sense in my opinion. It will now be easier to pay for future DLC, as there’s less reason to claim it should be free and included in the core game from now on. Asking to pay upfront for Horizons was a slight mistake I think, as player’s expectations were difficult if not impossible to meet. With Beyond, I think FDev will have remedied that.

its not for free, we are getting content for money they used for other games from elite purchases
Exactly, and that £35m+ profit from Jurassic World Evolution's sales will come in very handy for Q4 and Elite's next era's already active production. Continuous development supported by a financially-sound business - noice!
