Wolfpack Scenario Sucks

Yep, I said it. This scenario is, well, stupid.

It's setup so that you get attacked by multiple missiles IMMEDIATELY and have no instructions.

I'm assuming when the full game arrives, there will be some actual "scenario" included with this, but for now it just drops you into the middle of an asteroid field with a NPC who flies in circles and gives you absolutely no instructions, etc.

After possibly boosting far enough away to not get insta-killed, you get attacked by 3 or 4 ships, your NPC buddy does nothing and you have no Point Defense or Chaffes to cover your butt, so unless you're very crafty with the power pips and run like hell, you're going to be dead in under 30 secs.

I made it maybe a minute or two about 5 times in a row and just went back to playing Solo again.

Needs serious work.

**EDIT** Also, a Wolfpack isn't two dudes. Just sayin'.

what's your point exactly? you want it to be easier or what? :)

and chaff launcher doesn't affect missiles at all :)

I had the hardest time with this when I first played the game that I left it. After about a week or so playing the actual game I came back and found myself beating it. All I can say is that you really need to shorten up the gap between you and the Cobra RIGHT AWAY or he will launch missiles. If you're close then he can only fire one missile or two and by that point you may even be able to shoot it down if not you'll lose some shields not get blasted to bits. At that point it's all about staying with it until he goes boom. Occasionally your wingman will fire a missile or two that's when you really should move in so time your shots correctly and make sure you're reloaded.

Good Luck Commander.

He's talking about the single Cobra mission where you only have multi cannons and your wingman has a missile launcher.

Let's address the weapons, too. Next scenario (I beat this one by boosting so far away I could dodge the missiles) is Predator and Prey.

The scenario asks you to use "low temperature weaponry" but gives you a Beam Laser and Multi Cannon, nothing else.

It tells you to "avoid detection" (not sure how you kill stuff and have it not notice) and to "run cold" but doesn't specify exactly how that's done.

I used Silent Running, which was pointless because it basically just killed my shields and made me move slowly, but I still killed the merc before he could detect me.... then I went back and read the scenario description: "avoid the merc and take out the federal fighters".

I killed them all, merc first, but killed the merc while apparently "running cold".

I said screw this and turned off silent running, not wanting to face fed fighters with no shields and just took them out the old fashioned, in-your-face kind of way.

The scenario said I passed.

Might be broken, just a guess.

This is logical, sound advice, except that I don't understand how you would make those tactical decisions when you get killed so quickly.

"Run" and "turn around and shoot then run again" was about the only tactic I could use without being insta-killed.

Those combat scenarios were simply just a way to test the combat model in Alpha 1.0.

They are deliberately unfair at times.

I personally don't expect that they will be in the final release. Although the single player scenario mechanism might get re-purposed for a tutorial perhaps? Who knows.

Certainly one shouldn't judge those scenarios as if they are part of a final released product.

I'm assuming they would be used as a noob training ground. Most modern games have an in-game instruction period as part of the intro or first level. Combat scenarios would be a perfect way to learn the ins and outs of ED.

I was really just trying to get to the Factions scenario because I'm curious what it's all about.

Similar to EVE, combat scenarios would allow a new player to learn the ropes, but maybe also earn a few cred to start out with.

Back in Alpha 1.0 they did work as a kind of tutorial. Quite well infact.

Since then the difficulty has been increased more than once, if I recall correctly, and they are no longer such a friendly intro to the game that they once were.

If anyone says, "Ah they are easy", they might be remembering earlier incarnations.

I think it'd be great to see the functionality behind them re purposed with some new scripts to provide a more friendly tutorial. I expect that will be one to the last things to be worked on though.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Even in Alpha 1 I think I died quite a few times with some of the tutorials. ;)

Because there is a gap in the network with the mission start. You start half to a full second befeore your wingman appears and well before the Cobra comes around and starts firing. I cheated the system by boosting right away toward where the Cobra would show up. By the time he engaged I was right on top of him and in good position to tail him and start firing away.

I pulled a Kirk I suppose but that was the only real way to win without being some dogfighting hero. The experience I learned playing the game though is what kept me on the tail of the Cobra.. at first I wasn't even good enough to do that. One final bit that helped a lot was to map your thrusters becuase if you can strafe off center of the Cobra you get hit less but have to compensate in turning... more finesse you gain after spending some time at the controls.

I beat him by unloading everything I had at him then boosting away while I reloaded. The wingman would take over and I'd scoot back and shoot him in the rear when he wasn't looking. Rinse, repeat.

This scenario i found tedious after getting to beta and focusing on missions first so i could get some skills before going open play. I tried it several times and failed to complete it. Just went online. Then after about a week i decided to try it again. I found it at least easy then. Just go between asteroids, kill scout ship and just after You destroyed it switch to 2nd fire group and use heat sink. Proceed to another scout ship. Easymode ;) Seems its better to go online to get skills needed to beat scenarios :)

The mission starts with you basically under missile lock in about 10 seconds. Let me know how that hiding works out for you.

I played it last in pre-beta and just tried it again right now. I can confirm that it definitely has become more difficult, because they have implemented the "missile-salvo" thing for the AI.

However, it was no problem to find an asteroid and hide behind it until the enemy is close and you can set yourself on his six. One salvo got me a bit later, anyways, which I partially dodged or shot down and brought me down to 54%.

It is doable, but quite difficult. Good for a challenge and surely something for newer players to but his head onto. Think of the old arcade games, except you do not have three lifes. :)
