VR Question.

Hmm this is a bit of a bummer. I'd been thinking about getting a VR headset this christmas, but given the amount of time one spends in the galmap (and with the coming changes, in the local map as well), I'm wondering if it's going to be worth the 400+ USD if I need to take it off half the time.

BUY IT! The amazingnessness makes up for a little clunky galmap, and you can change settings to make it fine. The game is stunning in VR

Thanks for all the tips guys. I'm trying a combination of hat on the stick and arrow keys on the keyboard since I can find them easily. Not enough buttons on the touch controllers for me.

Also thanks for the heads-up on the VR section of the forum.

As noted above by Abumonkey, please don't let this prevent you from going VR. The game is truly amazing in 3D, easily overcoming the effort of refining galaxy map controls.

Spoils yer immershun but the simple answer? Take your headset off! (In my case I have lenses in my rift so I also put on my glasses). Use Dr Kais' EDProfiler to set up your 2D and VR screen settings or just look into the headset while you type ;-)
(Works for me.. YMMV)

Star Selection? Apply a little pitch and there you go. VR galaxy map is easy once you found out how to use it.

And lo!: finally, the Law has come to Helgoland (in Open, btw), but no likedeelers there to defend it. Poor Likedeelers :D

That is your first mistake - better to use HOTAS for ED than the monstrosity of gaming controllers that most VR solution OEM's provide. Those kinds of controllers are ok for somethings, just not for ED.

Wait for the VR people to give the new FSS interface a good try (I'll be streaming it sometime this week). I'm -very- concerned about it but we'll see how it shakes out in the beta.

FDev have certainly got some parts of the UI working really well with VR, and others not at all. It really smacks of different groups/people working on different things with no unified UI design lead. Which is a huge shame as the core game is **brliliant** in VR, just let down by some of the interfaces.

Every new UI really should go through VR, Console, and PC (with different aspect-ratio monitors) design reviews before being approved for final implementation.

It's absolutely fine to navigate the galaxy map in VR _if_ you set up your controls for it and get used to it. Lots of good tips here in this thread. Its gonna feel clunky at first, but once you get used to it its really fast and easy.

I never need to take my rift of while playing, i have my keyboard placed right behind behind my hotas, and i'm very thankful i learned to touch type back in the day, the few times i need to enter any text. :)

Lastly, if your controller has too few buttons, you can set up a "shift button" to alter what the other keys do. (You basically leave that button it self unbound, and bind functions by pressing that key together with a the button you want)

I've never really had an issue with the Galmap in VR, it seems to work fine if configured correctly. Only downside I see if the lack of a 'In HMD' keyboard to type in the searches on. That said I have created a 'virtual' keyboard which can be pinned in game via Oculus Dash or OVRDrop which can be used in one of 2 ways:

- Virtually pressing the keys (using Touch) or pointing at them / clicking using a Vive Wand
- Using a HAT and button mapped from your HOTAS to navigate around the keyboard and press the keys you want to type.

The Keyboard sends the keys presses directly to Elite (and only Elite) providing you have a cursor in the search box. I'm happy to release it if it would help people.

That's exactly what's needed and I'd love to have such a utility installed, though I think many people (including myself) would be wary of installing unsigned software these days (although I guess the EDEngineer folks are getting installations, even with that handicap/security problem). You don't have it open sourced on GitHub or anything, do you?

Nope it's not open source, nothing to install though it's just and exe and folder structure you unpack to your drive, a simple virus scan of the .zip archive should be sufficient if you are worried. Up to you if you trust me or not though, I understand, but I do release quite a few of my projects. One of the more popular being 'The Joy of Perspective mod' for the original Skyrim game, it quite literally had over 1 million downloads. Another (early WIP) had an article written about it on UploadVR https://uploadvr.com/skyrim-vr-mod-replaces-touch-controllers-virtual-hands/

Here is a video of one of my other projects, the keyboard was adapted from it:

That's pretty ' cool. :) Personally, I'd be happy just mapping a hat and button, allowing HOTAS text entry, although the ability to copy/paste text strings (for those far-off, un-marked, non-human-pronounceable system names I often want to route to) would be a huge bonus. Repped!

It's worth it, and it's far less than half the time.

I only take it off if I need to get up and go somewhere, otherwise all fine. Only loss is access to overlays and third party plug-ins like EDR. Also no discording and Netflix, but in exchange, I am inside the cockpit of my ship and that’s just g awesome!

I prefer the map in VR to the normal one, feels more natural to navigate. I use hotas and kind of fly around in it ... Joystick rotates and coolie hat moves laterally. Works great for me.

For me I find the galactic map is better and the system map worse. As for the orrery map, I'll tell you in 20 minutes' time... one hour's time <arrgh>
