Anyone having problems with X52 Pro on Win 8.1 and Elite Dangerous?

Hi guys,

I have been getting some very odd problems when playing Elite Dangerous using my new X52 Pro, on Win 8.1

The SST profile software is all setup (latest version from Saitek website for Win 8.1 x64) and generally speaking the game runs fine... for a while, then occasionally (and by that I mean maybe once or twice a week, given I play pretty much every night), the game will start behaving very stangely and my X52 will seeminlgy start to malfunction.

Symtoms include:

  • the mfd screen on the throttle stick will start to flicker rapidly
  • keys will seemingly get stuck in a "down" state, meaning that I can no longer control the game properly, and even if I manage to quit out out to windows desktop, I can no longer left click or right click with the mouse
  • computer will hang if I try to reboot it/turn it off

When it gets into this state, nothing but a system reboot seems to fix it. Unplugging the X52 from the USB port and replugging does not help. Neither does force killing and restarting the SST software.

Basically I am trying to figure out if this is a problem being caused with the game, with the SST profile software, or some combination of both. Or even, is it an intermittent hardware failure?

Has anyone else experienced this or similar issues with their X52 Pro on Win 8/8.1?

Thanks guys. Slowly driving me insane!

Hi mate

I'm using the X52 Pro in Win 8.1 also. However, I'm not using the profile software to manage my controls. I do have it running (for both the hotas and the pedals), but I'm not actively using a profile (I've mapped my controls in game).

Whilst playing ED I haven't experienced the issues you describe. However, I have experienced precisely those symptoms in other games, such as Cliffs of Dover. This would suggest a problem external to ED, though it could just be coincidence.

Sorry I can't be more help.

I have the X-55 and their drivers fail miserably under win 8.1.
I just upgraded to a new more powerful machine and put 8.1 on there.
Some might say why? well generally I like windows 8.1 after a few tweaks I use it at work and on another PC at home.

Anyway the saitek drivers are useless for this thing. Brand New Windows 8 install. Install the drivers for the joystick. Everything seems to be working correctly. I then restart Windows and all hell breaks loose on the throttle. Flashing lights, throttle not responding, their programming software not seeing throttle sticks, etc.

I have a friend that had problems with the X52 Pro and he uninstalled there drivers and just let windows use the default. It means you cant use profiles but he can go into game and assign stick controls as required.

One thing that helped my issues is to make sure you go into your power management profile in the control panel and find the options under advanced where it refers to putting the USB ports into power saving mode and set it to never. As a matter of fact on my gaming PC I basically set all power saving to NEVER.

Sometimes the MFD and throttle LED's won't come on. Sometimes The joystick won't remember it's LED colour settings in 8.1 Update 1.

It's not a huge deal - just reset in the control panel.

8.1 is personally a huge headache for me, but for a couple of reasons I am forced to use it. It's even worse that it has to run natively, or I'd have just kept it in an VM :(

Roll on 9!

I do not use the Saitek software at all - my X52 Pro works fine - however after a couple of dozen hours use I did have to set a small deadzone on the throttle.

I would be tempted to completely uninstall the SST profile software, except without it you can't tweak the functionality of certain buttons.

Eg. I have tweaked it so that I can bind the pinkie trigger, and the mouse wheel scroll and click. I don't think you can do this normally... can you (ie when you try to bind them in game options screen, it just does not recognise them)?

You can do most of this in No Profile :)

The pinky trigger needs a profile to be bound, unfortunately. I just use it as-is for the menu switching.

The only thing I absolutely had to make a profile to get to work was the thumb mouse - and that had poor results anyway.

A SOLUTION.
I may have a solution for you, a friend of mine had issues with the x52 pro and the MFD screen would not light up, after looking at various solutions it turned out to be a issue with the onboard intel USB ports,

his symptoms were machine hanging on shut down and MFD issues.

to over come this the purchase of a USB PCI card was needed. these cost about £20 or less. this solved all issues. it turns out the some motherboards run a crap USB service namely Intel.

though the X52 pro is a great joystick it doesn't like intel.

My motherboard is an ASUS P8P67 Pro rev 3.0b

Any ideas if this might have usb issues with the x52 pro?

I would put money on the below issues being related to the onboard USB ports.

hanging on shutdown.
Throttle MFD misbehaving.
joystick lights not working.
driver install issues.

if you are having the above issues I would strongly suggest forking out for a decent PCI USB card.

Mine is flawless, I love it.

However I think Mobius is correct. I had similar issue to the OP until I hot-glued the cords on the Joysticks securely in place. Nary an issue since.

You mean the PS2 cable the connects the throttle and stick? You glued them together?

I have an X52 Pro and am running windows 7.

My problems seem to be with the clutch (should be disengaged?) - button 31 on the throttle.

If I press that button then it and the thumb hat on the joystick start flashing (and don't stop).

Then I get the 'hanging during windows shutdown' problem.

As yet I have not discovered how to alter the clutch setting in the Saitek program. The guide I have found is for a non-pro stick and shows that the saitek program has a picture of the joystick, showing all the buttons .....but mine doesn't have the picture.

So I just don't use that button, and if I do happen to press it, I swear profusely !

Hi Ian,

Have you tried to go into the settings software of the X52 Pro? You can start it from the system Tray (bottom Right, small arrow up, Saitek icon, options) like I explained during our visit to FantastiCcon?

You should get into the settings screen for the MFD that way. It looks like this if you go to the MFD Tab:

and make sure that the ENABLE CLUTCH MODE is turned OFF.
Also LATCHED should be turned OFF, just as shown in this picture.

Cheers mate!

I have similar problems when I plug my X52 into a USB 3.0 port. Googling seems to show that these joysticks have issues with USB 3.0 ports in general. If you have a USB 2.0 or below port available on your machine, use that instead. Solved all of my issues.

I am definitely NOT using any of the USB3.0 ports on my motherboard to connect my X52 Pro (verified by unplugging ALL devices, then just plugging in the X52, and checking which USB root hub it showed up under), was definitely connected to a USB2.0 root hub. So that rules that out I guess.

I suppose that either leaves the PS2 port cable that connects the throttle and stick, if it is slightly lose maybe it is causing windows to throw a hissy fit mid game when the joystick disconnects or something... not sure how to really test this and/or fix it however.

Last possibility could be just not to use ANY of the usb ports on my motherboard, and buy a PCI USB card like you guys suggested, but this seems a tad extreme... I mean, I dont have any other USB issues at all with my system (and never have).

If all that fails, time to RMA my stick I guess, have only had if from new for 2 months, so should be under warranty.
