Frontier, can we PLEASE have a new Exploration ship now?

Hmmm I wonder why all the [Insert pew pew ship name] EXPLORER ships either don't have enough internals to truly explore or why they don't have the range of a Anaconda

Clearly we must have a Guardian hybrid explorer to scout out viable second bubbles when our current one is annihilated next "winter".

It must have sparky glowy bits, exposed wires, and a coffee maker.

Anything else is unacceptable.

^ this!

Kinda scary to think there will be all out war .. but you know it's going to happen eventually. The story arc is clearly headed towards that direction. And all the rats are going to be fleeing from the sinking ship of the current bubble and who the hell wants to make the trip to Colonia in a low jump range ship!

Also, we need a cat who has evolved into a humanoid but still thinks they're a cat.. and a dead guy who's been repurposed as the ships hologram.

I'm seeing a film script in the works.

J.J. Abrams would be willing to direct such a film... complete with lens flare. Hell, Michael Bay might do it if you add in some explosions every time the thrusters fire.

Every single ship can be used for exploration. Even the Vulture.

And what even is a dedicated exploration ship?
Long jump range?
No weps?
Paper armor?
You can do that with every single ship in the game.

What a weak argument.

Every ship has hardpoints, so every ship can shoot things, so why do we need more combat ships then? The game already has 35 combat ships in it!

I seriously don't see FD making a explorer only ship. To keep with the annies jump range they would have to break another ship like the annie is broken.
Besides there are several great explorers. even if they are called multirole. Jump distance isn't the top priority for an explorer anyway.
I'll keep my Clipper. CYAS in the void. :)

People can keep claiming jump range doesn't matter, but statistics say otherwise, time and time again:

What a weak argument.

indeed combat is all dominant, and i totally get that a new cool looking explo ship would be nice, e.g.:

but with guardian fsd boosters and engineering it's jump range which is becoming increasingly a weak argument. you can bring almost any ship over 50ly, several well over that ... how much is enough? what is it what you want in an exploration ship that rules all others out?

i'm also all for ship variety and compromise, but keep in mind powercreep has already busted all that, and the upside is that ships are more versatile. plus having hardpoints doesn't make a ship a combat ship. (i wish exploration mechanic would have made use of hardpoints for the new gadgets instead of that dreadful analysis mode).

Are people really disputing the idea that certain traits, such as long jump-range, are desirable for exploration?

Blimey, some people must be desperate for an argument.

Said it before but the best way to create a dedicated exploration ship that can't be subverted for anything else would be to give it a lousy PP and PDist and then only give it a couple of decent-sized internal slots and make the rest C1/C2 slots.

Also, FDev should print out pictures of the Type 7 and Clipper, pin them to the office wall and then, if they ever realise that a new ship bears any resemblance to either of those ships, delete the file and start again. :p

Those aren't pretty or clear-shape designs. It doesn't fit in Elite imo.

what do you mean? imo the cutter and the clipper aren't pretty and don't fit in elite either, so could be scrapped. oh, and throw all those alliance bathtubs with feet away too. [haha]

i see nothing wrong with an explorer ship actually looking like a science vessel, but anyway the point remains 'what do you guys want exactly?' when you ask for an explorer ship?

We got the Krait! It's about what I wanted from a medium exploration ship. Now I just need limpets as ammo and I can stay out in the dark forever AND carry a fighter [smile]

That and canopy view and SC agility.

Very underated in the conversations, always seems to be about jump range (zzzz)

With 3.3 SC maneuverability is going to matter a lot less than before. No need to have an agile ship in SC if all you do is sitting there drifting at 30 m/s and clicking at "blue blobs"™ and then fly in a straight line to objects to drift there to fire probes at balls.

:/

I can also go from Detroit to New York in a Plane, Car or bicycle. Which will get me there faster so I can start doing what i need in comfort and a respectable amount of time?
