The Star Citizen Thread v9

Even if they could build a whole Star System per month (regardless of how many planets actually in them), it still would take them 100 month, that's 8 years and 4 month, to do so.

IF their procgen tech worked, they could build the entire gameplay area in seconds.

What should be taking time is the time needed to handcraft and customise each system. Not creating the underlying game infrastructure.

CIG probably won't be able to create the expected density of content within any...well, most...systems. That should speed up system generation quite nicely.

ONCE they get their procgen systems running

They are using procedural generation for the terrain, normal maps, texture blending etc on the moons. Handcrafted areas and POIs are then placed.

The forest they showed at the Citcon demo was also procedural.

Here is a $40 Unity asset which uses the same planetary terrain generation, from surface to space:
https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/tools/terrain/planetary-terrain-101118

This is also using a floating origin which I am told is the same system that CIG are using.

CIG's difficulties are with building their networking, physics, collision detection, AI and moving player characters between co ordinate systems inside a gameworld built with this tech - and doing it optimally and seamlessly at runtime.

That's where experience, clear design and strict scoping are vital, or else you end up with a janky mess and fragile code - which is where CIG have been for years now.

This is why it has been impossible for them to set schedules for basic feature development. They are building on shifting sands. The engine development was never designed correctly and the project has never been managed properly.

The scope kept changing because Chris's marketing had to compete with actual released games - the real hard work of redesigning and rescoping the engine - serious back to the drawing board stuff - was never done.

This. Because way he set up everything, including money flows, meant there won't be ever enough money, and that he would continuously ask money around, and for that he needed to market game to different type of gamers.

It is insane, but that's how really works.

Simply from taking a look at what Star Citizen is right now this post makes a whole lot of sense....

Guy forgot to say he's been a backer since 2012, spent $8000, named his child in honour to the game and is only upset because he cares too much.

It's a shame their mods are so anti-criticism, why not just ask them to tone it down a bit instead of outright deleting?

It's still in the general section of Spectrum, but for some reason the link doesn't work.

Strange...I can still visit the page on the spectrum but when I post the link its not working....discussion is "fun" as always......

Profanity filter.

FD have filtered out the last two letters of the URL. Just add the letter b and the letter s to the end.

I dont believe there are any official moderator employees left. The only supervisors with the title probably have other duties and simply double for the sake of appearance. Actual moderating tasks are left to the most faithful who work for free and carry the majority of all issues hence the utter cancer reaction when certain individuals are named and the biased moderating. Moderating team probably was one of the first to to be culled when money got tight.

Just read the Q&A on the Valkyrie

If the Valkyrie can´t hold cargo, how are the players supposed to transport small supplies (ammo, food…) and weapons (like mortars or anti-tank weapons, railguns or RPGs etc…) to the front lines?

The Valkyrie’s purpose is to carry troops and a vehicle down to a location, drop them off, and provide close support via its weaponry. It is very much a dropship/gunship rather than a resupply ship. While some dropships may simply drop off the team and jet, the Valkyrie is equipped to provide continued support for drop off and extraction. The troops onboard have a gunrack per seat alongside storage lockers for additional items if the crew are not using them. The combination of troops, FPS weapon racks, vehicle deployment, and the ability to provide close support, all makes the Valkyrie a strong candidate for when you need to get in and out planetside.

Much like with that Hercules thing after the tank was announced, Im calling it.

The next pledge ship is going to be a combat resupply ship.

With every step they take towards nailing down things (real features, not concepts or art), the more people will complain. This isn't just SC/CIG, its every game out there where people get to see the game before release.

The big difference here is CIG have been telling people since kickstarter that the game will be everything they want, that it will be designed with their input, that it will be the game for them.... and they believed it!

Yep the dreams keeps popping. For the longest time people were sleepwalking in the "its everything" limbo but its time to wake up now. If they dont want to face reality and actual technical limitations then CiG trying to "put down" a release version will cause a lot of disappointment when people suddenly become aware that the things they were dreaming about either arent in the game anymore or are not considered for the forseeable future. This is just one of the hard decisions CiG was pushing ahead of itself for as long as possible. I m sure that if it would be Cash Roberts decision they would remain the eternal-concept stage of development but alas this is one thing he cannot control as he does his company. In the end people become either bored or frustrated with the long wait. Promises and announcement only work for so long. Its especially bad when you have competing titles catching up or even passing this behemoth of a crowdfunding project.

Sooner or later people expect results. And thats when we finally are going to take a look under CiGs hood. An "open development" project that kept a tight lid on everything from the beginning, instead bombarding its backers with propaganda and hype material never allowing for actual insights into whats cooking at the moment. So after years of waiting suddenly there is this large gap between whats there and what should be there according to CiG themselves. Backpadling and excuses have already started a long time ago but there seem to be a large percentage of backers who never really followed development that closely (read....didnt get brainwashed) and now after a felt eternity take a look and are shocked at what they find. But of course people asking questions and wondering about SCs current state are attacked as haters, trolls or whatnot.

I dont think there will be a middle ground for CiG. A kind of acceptance from fans and backers to take whats there and be satisfied. Too many people paid or "donated" too much actual RL cash for that to happen.

"Oh yeah I pledged 3000 bucks and I m getting an unfinished and buggy mini-game. Guess I ll just take the bullet and swallow that bitter pill....."

Well that money is lost either way thats one harsh truth that many have yet to realize. And if some poor suckers really think that what they get is worth multiple thousand dollars then I ve got good news for them. There are a lot more scams out there waiting for the poor deluded fool who has more money then braincells :)

The ongoing propaganda already tries to counter all the fantasizing and dreamcrafting by preparing the flock for yet longer waiting times and downsizing expectations little by little.

Its a good thing that you dont have to chose and stay loyal to one single game nowadays. Many chose the dream and played a reliable and existing game in the meantime. Its just sad to see that so many who got r0xx0red by the dream vent their frustration on the games that actually served them during the times of hardship instead of giving Cash Roberts and CiG a taste of their vitriol and disappointment.
