Insomnia Gameplay Demo with David Braben

Interesting video. Nice sneak peek of the next build.

@Celeste I just changed the topic title to something that gives people more of an idea of what is in the post :)

now that may be why the peek of the week went on a day early, it often happens when there's something scheduled on thursday. then friday comes the newsletter.

Ok couple of things....

Now why was he saying that there weren't enough people playing the game..? Was he talking about Frontier employees or has this been partially released that we don't know about?

Other couple of observations. Planetary rings seemed to look much more seamless now the closer you got not the band and stripe and load effect we got going on..

Another... the hud is starting to resemble more and more the cap ship trailer... hmm interesting.

The video obviously is edited to speed up the discussion to interesting bits.. anyone that was there was something missed during those edits?

Other than that things are moving along!

I heard him say there were about 75,000 people playing the game now.

Edit at 5:11 in the vid

I'm thinking he's referring to the number of people who got the Beta not that particular build and instance... if not then that means that whatever version was being played is backwards compatible with our Beta.

Yes, number of people playing in the Beta. The one in the video would be the next build that hasn't been added to the online game yet.

I like the new interface.
Hm.. a bobblehead in _all_ ships now?

Also, is it a bug that his "Supercruise speed & distance" indicator (on left side) keeps displaying even after he has dropped out of supercruise?

I see gimbaled weapons are still "wobbling" around their target. Even with today's technology, there is no excuse for this, so in the future they should track exactly... looks like someone needs a basic lesson in control systems.

Wonder why the ship menus have been changed, but the outfitting screens seem the same as the present build. Are they going to change to the new look as well?

Nope, it looks like someone needs a basic lesson in game balancing. Gimbals will NEVER track 100%.

I like the new compass much better, but I don't like the little fire icon at the top of the heat scale.

With you on that. It works in principle, in that it gets the message across about it being the heat gauge.

It looks a little cheesy though to me, like it's been quickly grabbed from some bootstrap like icon font or something.

It color, design and apparent angle make it look like it's not part of the holographic HUD.

I'm betting it'll get another pass before we see it. I hope so anyway.

Doesn't look like there's any sign of in-system maps then :(

Yeah, it looks completely out of place (and unnecessary).:(

I'd prefer if instead there were the word "HEAT" (HUD is in all caps, isn't it?) or, for example, just the letter 'H' instead of an icon.

I would like to point out that I think this is not Beta 2 - as they play on live server, it mostly have cherry picked changes regarding cockpit, graphical improvements, etc. but overall core is the same.

Also this version was prepared some time ago, most likely a month.

Looks like a dev build to me (it has a Dev version label in the corner). Beta 2 will have other branches integrated into it depending on what they can finish before the deadline. I wouldn't take this as a Beta 2 feature demonstration by any means. The presentation was actually a few days ago too.

I love hearing David talk about ED. He gets so excited by it all, it's infectious. This build looked "cleaner", the graphics look a little smoother. I would guess this was a build specifically for the show rather than full on Beta 2. Could be wrong though, I frequently am.

Heh. We, the PC Elite, used to blame huge fonts and ugly GUIs on the console crowd (look at all the font/gui mods for Oblivion and Skyrim to cram more info onto the screen). Now we're doing it to ourselves in the name of Virtual Reality. :)

I like the look of the new UI myself, much cleaner and more minimal (I'd like them to clear it up even more personally). I hope we won't see the text/icons getting any bigger in the name of VR. I game at 2560x1600 on a 30 inch screen right now and ideally would like to be at 4K on a 55 inch display next year. That being the case I'd like to see much smaller UI elements, rather than the other way round.

Would be great to have some customisation options here in future to keep us all happy, more time and work unfortunately though... The important thing at the very least is to make sure all the UI elements are included at a high resolution. Aside from the giant/oversized console HUDs/UIs we've had to put up with the other issue is that they were mastered for a max screen res of 1080p to be viewed from across the living room (and thus are not only huge but horrifically blurry to boot!).

(...and yes I've modded my Skyrim and Fallout installs for tiny UIs which remain totally hidden for 90% of the time. The Skyrim UI mods and customisation options provided by them are quite astounding actually :p)

From what I've seen in the video I don't like the new panel designs, but I reserve my final judgment until I've tried them myself.
