General / Off-Topic Do electronic screens affect your sleep?

I'm not sure about the LCD screens keeping me awake (probably though).

What annoys me mostly is the current fashion to have glaring bright LED's on pretty much everything, where something simple as a wifi-extender can light up a room at night like a disco.

But I definitely notice a discomfort around intense LED lighting. I suspect it's the very narrow bandwidth that the LED's operate on.
Some festivals I go to have so switched to LED lighting that I have to wear sunglasses at night :)

I have found out that for me it's not the type of light, but amount of light in a room that makes a difference. If I have my flat lit like a christmas tree, I tend to stay up late. If however I use dim lighting, natural "sleepines" sets on earlier. Especially when playing in a dark, autumn afternoon slowly transforming to night and the only light source being the OLED TV and the damn wifi router which could be used as emergency flashlight ;-)))

Seriously, what perverted engineer put anti-fog leds in a wifi router... :D

I think this is probably the worse thing. Having screens around before you go to sleep is maybe one thing. Blinky blue lights while you sleep, I think another and probably makes sleep much lighter. (Blue especially, being shorter wavelength than red which is a lower and therefore even possibly soothing energy).

What I do know is, given the devastating effect it has on my FM radio, I refuse to sleep with mobile phone, anywhere near my bonce.

I have used that rule with my latest phone and it has lasted much longer :)

I've disabled that silly 'warm' setting at night on every device that's tried to use it. I reallllly dislike having the colors change. Probably the artist part of me (I like to draw/paint on my iPad).

Anyway, yeah, whatever sleep issues I have don't seem to be related to what screens I look at, or how blue they are.

I hadn't thought about it being blue light. There's a blue LED night light in the hall outside our bedroom. Another blue one in the game room down the hall. Even though they don't seem to affect my sleep, I wonder if I should replace them with another color?

It takes me a long time to fall asleep, I've always struggled with it. But I make sure I stop playing computer/using a computer monitor around 2 hours before I go to sleep, and then I go out for a walk for at least half hour, to rest my eyes.

I must admit that since that I have my glasses anti blue light, I have the eyes which are not irritated the evenig, and I'm less tired in front of the screen.

I think that it's also good for the balance of the sleep.

Nope.
Half the time I'm nodding off in front of the TV.
:p

I don't think it's screens keeping people awake, but the content. If something is particularly interesting, scary or exciting, etc, I think most people keep thinking about it, which keeps them awake.

Once I go to bed I don't touch my phone until morning. This is a fairly recent thing for me and it's definitely helped with getting to sleep.

Yep, I think that this is absolutely the case. With me, at least. I need to calm down my thought processes, not add more fuel to those fires!

Beer goggles.

Its a misleading study in that it is not about number of hours watching a screen, but when you do so. This study does not shed any light on it.

Glasses with progressive lenses with anti-blue light treatment.

Very current now.

Of course you see the blue color as usual. :)

These corrective lenses are very relaxing in front of the screens.
