Hardware & Technical Ultra wide or super ultra wide

Thought it's about time to give myself a little Christmas present, so planning ahead a little.
Looking at a new monitor, wider than wide is really nice to have since I intend to play ED a lot.
Also have some racing games I still play regularly which should be able to support wider formats.

Thing is, I can't choose.

Ultra wide with 1440p or even 1600p.
Or 'super ultra wide' which are always 1080p as far as I can find.

Anyone of you know if the extreme ratio (32:9) of these supers is going to be a problem with ED?
Or any other reason, not just ED related, to better go for a more common 21:9?

A 32:9 should work fine with ED, but you should be aware of a couple of things 1) this "bug" that has existed since the games release and 2) the 'barrel' effect i.e. planets near the edge of the screen will appear 'warped'. How much these things bother you only you can decide. They don't bother me too much on my 21:9 screen but I think I would feel differently on 32:9.

Personally I think 1080 is not enough vertical resolution, especially when you are paying that much money. The only super ultra wide available now (or soon) is the Dell: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/blog/de...trawide-ips-panel-and-5120-x-1440-resolution/ but this is marketed as a business monitor not gaming. You could wait until AOC or LG bring out their 5120x1440 gaming panels but from memory they are not scheduled until Q2, and probably won't be cheap.

I haven't seen ED on a super wide but I can imagine it almost being too wide, whereas I would imagine it would be much better for racing games (which I used to play but don't have time since ED can along :)) being a possible replacement for triple-head.

There is also 37.5" 3840 x 1600 which is a very nice size/resolution, but I can't remember if any screens have been released yet (I think not). You should also factor in refresh rates and Gsync/Freesync into your decision making.

The LG 38WK95C-W has been out a year and I believe there are a few other manufacturers using the same panel. It's a bit pricey for a 75Hz display though.

Yeah I know. Would also like to see a bit more than 1080.
Not many options and the really good ones are both very expensive and not really for gaming (ips, 5+ms).

Read about that distortion effect. Don't think it would really bother me but indeed something to check before buying.

There is a solution.
Bottles.

But yeah those are getting rare these days, if I must have a beer while playing I occasionally succumb and use a straw.
But most of the time I just leave the beer for later.

I quite often drink and fly in VR at weekends. I use a straw but it used to float a lot out due to the bubbles. I’ve now enhanced the humble straw by attaching a clothing peg to weight it down and switched to paper straws to be all environmentally conscious!

Don’t normally drink beer though... whiskey and coke through a paper straw with a peg attached in VR is right classy :D

Beer is a thirst quencher, not to be getting drunk on.
Although, once upon a time there was a time when I was singing in the streets after just a couple of pints.
That feels like a long time ago...

That's what I do :p
And you can simply push the straw up against the side and it will be perfectly fixed in position.

As for the whisky I just drink that after playing, or before.
And sometimes during.
Directly from the bottle.

Damn I feel slightly out done with my cunning straw enhancement! Might have you try one of those ready made JD and cokes in a can :D

As for whiskey from a bottle... that’s pretty hardcore haha :D

Mostly I like to make my whisky a bit of an event.

Nice glass, comfy seat etc and I like to nurse it.
I normally don't have more than one or two in an evening cause it takes me a couple of hours to finish it sometimes.

I know it makes me sound a bit like a tool but I don't really like blended whisky, I'm a single malt kind of guy and my personal choices are either an Ardbeg or Lagavulin.
Lagavulin could honestly be described as a bonfire sifted through an ashtray but I love it.
Ardbeg is kind of the opposite as far as whisky's go.
Smooth, earthy, bit of fire but no ashtray.
So I prefer those out of a tumbler.

I just can't make myself drink a $70 bottle of whisky from the bottle, by it can last me a month or two.

I'm far more likely to reach for the rum while playing.
