I think I miss the old "2.1" days...

My peak ED playing time was around 2.1 to 2.3.
I've been playing since the beta days, but that was when my interest level was highest.

I'm trying to think what changed, but the answer is interesting (to me lol).

The first thing was money lol. Those were the gold rush days, and even though a lot of it was way over the top, there was an excitement about waiting to see what the next money craze was and trying it out. I remember being in two minds about them all at the time, but...MONEY :) lots and lots of money. Love it or hate it, it opened up so much more of the game to me, I could try lots of ships and weird loadouts.

The second thing is thargoids, but not actual thargoids, just the anticipation of them. The heady science days, probes, artefacts, formidine rift, then finding crashed thargoid ships. It was really interesting, it felt like something huge was waiting to happen, something that would need lots of clever puzzling, exploration, science and ingenuity to figure out. The actual introduction of the thargoids was less than I'd hoped for, still a neat thing and a lot of people enjoy it, but I was hoping for more science and less shooty, but each to their own.

Third thing was what was going to happen next. As mentioned in point two there was the early hints of thargoids and Guardians. People still spoke of space legs and atmospheric landing, we were getting big updates in the game, even surpises (holo me for example, just turned up and looked great). It felt like I had to keep playing as something was around the corner that I'd need all my resources to deal with, or new stuff to learn.

This isn't a negative post, but I miss those days, even though there was a lot wrong as such, elite felt really alive back then. There was mystery and a lot of unknown.

I feel like I want that back. I mean I love all the new stuff, I really do, and things work better now, and we have a lot more in the game, but it's like, a lot of the science and mystery has gone, or seemed to dry up. Money is way more balanced but sometimes balance is boring :) the odd crazy gold rush wouldn't go amiss now and again ;).
This is sort of my hope for what happens after 3.3, I don't mean game breaking cash grabs lol, but bring back the fun, the crazy stuff, the feeling that there's something going on we need to investigate. I'd even do without any major updates if all we got was loads of story and intrigue and things to do and find out :)

Anyway, just my opinion, a plea for more of that stuff, please :) add loads of reasons for us to use those new exploration mechanics, not just things to see, but things to interact with and new stories to unfold, do that and I don't care about space legs or anything else :)

I only started with 2.4 but I miss my Rhea billions...
And I really miss hearing about a new gold rush and racing to get some hundred millions out of it.
Really, that was fun, hearing rumors, going there, exploring the possibilities... That was fun I agree [up]
I know many people hate gold rushs but for me, I only started to appreciate the game when I was billionaire and had the choice to fly every ship I want.

I miss the Thargoids being heard of, but rarely seen.
And I actually liked it when they showed up in force, but we're still invincible.

IMHO, the AX weapons came too soon, too powerful, and basically ruined the "return".

Normal weapons should have been ever so slightly effective, like they had a 95% resistance to our standard attacks.
Shields should have been utterly useless, and armour not much better.

They also shouldn't be optional content where they are operating. If you're in a system with a Thargoid presence, you should be well aware of this, not only from them pulling you out of supercruise (in an all new and exciting/terrifying way) and hyperspace, but NPCs should be screaming "run for your lives!", and every port, station and outpost should be under evacuation, and heavily damaged.

All neighbouring systems should be offering missions to extract VIP passengers and data, as well as directly research the Thargoids themselves.

Then after several weeks of research, running evacuation gauntlets and various CGs, should we start getting slightly improved weapons and defences to defend ourselves.

But right now, they just feel like homeless people. Not particularly dangerous, unless provoked, and just make a mess. But you can safely walk past them. :p

a lot of the science and mystery has gone, or seemed to dry up.

Yeah, that was a kind of gameplay that pretty much no other game was offering.

Annoyingly, quite a few players vocally whined that they thought it was impenetrable and elitist while simultaneously refusing to even try to learn anything about anything to participate, but I guess there's always players complaining about anything and everything, so maybe that wasn't the reason, though I kind of suspect it didn't help.

Personally, I'm waiting for the Codex to drop - that "rumor" feature to let us know about things that haven't been found yet - maybe it will reveal that some mysteries still need cracking, or maybe most of what it out there will be undiscovered sights and anomalies where the difficulty is mostly finding the needle in the haystack? I doubt they would drop this feature without adding a few things to make use of it, so fingers crossed!

Same for me as well, though funny enough for different reasons. The future potential of the game seemed limitless and its "arcade" and meta gameplay tendencies hadn't really set in yet. The Engineers progression hugely unbalanced the game and made the game less about playing "your way" and more about playing the meta. It took a while for this to sink in and really affect the game in general.

Making credits was never an issue for me and has become much less of one over the years. Once I got my rum-runner Cobra Mk III kitted out in early 3301 (2015) I was pretty well set, both in survivability and financial security. Only the most competent of player pirates had a chance of ever catching me while trading rares.

During and then after mid-3301 I got more into exploration, which mercifully let me avoid much of the meta and contextually nonsensical – for my Commander – gameplay progression.

People were literally finding things by turning their graphics cards down and looking for texture blips. Call me a whiner if you like but I for one do not consider that "high science". I think OA did avideo where he tried to solve some Thargoid clues himself and mostly failed.

Also regarding the Codex, some of us whiners were also whining about the impenetrable nature of the Threadnaughts which locked all the clues up in forums. Make sure you remember that was our fault too.

I wasn't aware of that puzzle. I saw a lot of people trying silly things out of desperation or clutching at straws, but that's to be expected. Some puzzles were annoying bad, but some were good and were unlike anything else out there. Meanwhile ant little whiners were complaining that it was UNFAIR that it was IMPOSSIBLE for them to participate because (for example, I am not making this up) they absolutely believed "you have to have a Computer Science degree" to understand what was actually basic binary that schools have been teaching the 9-year-old children since the 1970's. Several times I gently nudged towards refresher material, but I didn't see any of the vocal ones show any interest in discovering that they could indeed tackle the clues if they genuinely wanted to. The closest I saw was the goalposts moving to "everything should be able to be done in the game", but of course if you're piloting a ship, then your cockpit is part of the game, and part of your cockpit is your real physical flight controls layout which can easily include a notepad and pen next to the Thrustmaster flightstick and throttle.

Elite was making global headlines from that gameplay, bringing new players into the fold. I hope the indignant rage didn't undermine that. Hopefully FD is going a "third way" where important and interesting puzzles will continue to happen, but maybe not feel like the whole galaxy is riding on them, so that players who don't want puzzles don't feel like IT'S THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS and I'M MISSING OUT!!!

And that's probably another feature of the Codex: discoveries that can be found without puzzle solving. Something for everyone. Hopefully.

1.4 & 2.0 was probably the golden age for me, 2.1 was a mess. On the bright side I went exploring and learned an awful lot about the Galaxy with the game locations inspiring me to find out about the real places its simulation was based on.

The gold rush thing was pretty exciting, Being able to make a nice amount of money without spending a mind numbing amount of time sat infront of your monitor was so nice.

2.1 was about when I started so I naturally have fond memories of it. But no, I think the game is much better now. Basically, we have all the gameplay we had then, and more, and even more coming soon.

I think 2.3 was when the game stopped feeling like everything was just adequate for release, and instead started feeling like a polished game.

In terms of gameplay, the search for Jaques' Station was a good one for me. At the time, while I was following up leads, searching etc, I was also halfway convinced the station had been removed from the game and likely might not even be put back until the story was ready for it to reappear, so I was often salty in expectation of disappointment even though excited, but no; it turned out the station had definitely been waiting for us the entire time, and that gave me a lot more faith and interest in those kinds of challenges going forward.

I can't think why some people found much of the "Science" community unapproachable.

I wasn't part of any "science" community (if there even was one), I was just another player playing the game and loving it. Like I said - I gently and politely tried to help various people that mistakenly thought these puzzles weren't approachable by them. My conclusion in hindsight is that they didn't want to be helped, they wanted the puzzles removed from the game.

You suggesting I was being unapproachable is misreading the sequence of events, I was encouraging and tried to help. My feeling that you take issue with was formed after those experiences, because of them.
