PvP Is nonconsensual PvP really that much of a problem?

People gripe a lot about PvP, and act like the game is full of griefers and bullies. But most people are just as worried about losing their ships and their work as the next guy, and don’t want to ruin other people’s fun. If I ever get interdicted by another commander, it’s because I throw caution to the wind and don’t take precautions to avoid being interdicted, or name my ship something really corny and silly to bait people. Normally I’ll just see who has an FSD Interdictor and see what they’re up to. And most the people who like PvP aren’t garbage, antisocial human beings. Is nonconsensual PvP that much of a problem, or is it overblown and people are overly cautious?

As a concept, no, not at all.

Some people really dislike it, but it's part of the games design.

Personally though, I would prefer if people attacking other people, had a reason beyond "I have guns and they explode"

You know, like an in game reason, one that makes sense within the game world, not motivated from outside of it.

There are a few players that are what most would consider to be overly aggressive, and there are a few that most would consider to be overly sensitive.

But it happens, and when it does one or the other gets frustrated and then many more feed on that frustration, which is probably the actual part that is bad.

I can only really speak for myself but freeform PvP has never been an issue in a bad way for me, I can only encourage people to try it for themselves & make up their own mind as I have.

I empathise with the frustrations of meeting players with more extreme views, and have proposed ways to help improve the QoL for the more aggressive (Clogging, meaningful PvP etc). I feel the game already offers solutions for the more sensitive (modes, blocklist etc).

This thread is just going to run and run isn't it? ;)

I don't like it myself, which is why I don't put myself in the position to be a part of it, but I don't think it's a 'problem'. If it is a problem, there's two solutions that have been available since release. I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of it in this thread though.

A problem? No not really, not in terms of unwanted encounters per hour. A preference? Yes very much. All mmo's I've played had optional PVP and if ED didn't have solo I'd have never bought the game. I'm also the type of person who plays Dark Souls offline, but then does crazy challenges like level 1 playthroughs and such. The point is, people enjoy different aspects about games. Whilst ED caters to both the PVE and PVP crowd (with the different game modes) I'd still like to one day play online with other commanders, just without PVP. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It is seriously overblown. Sometimes players attack you but its pretty easy to predict where is dangerous if you are at all perceptive. And even those that attack are usually normal decent guys. I like the point you made about provocative names. Iv attacked people because of their name before. It's funny to message them something really random. Often I will shoot them up but only disable their ship and leave while they reboot. It's a space ship game where you strap guns to your flying weapon and are then left to do whatever you feel like. Good fun for everyone with a positive attitude and loads of salt for people who think they are victims.

This is the bit that's actually bad imo. Just find people who want to play the same way as you do imo, we all like different things.
I get this point and as a rule, when I interdict someone I either make sure they are wanted OR see if they shoot at me. If they are clean and try only to escape, I let them. I make that choice because it could be some one trying open for the first time. But it's still a shooty shooty spaceship game where nearly every station sells guns, interdictors, point defenses, ships that are basically flying weapons platforms and so on. Is there balancing issues? Of course but that's another topic.

In the bubble I usually fly my Type-9. Big ship, rebuy costs me around 6mil, but against any determined player I have no chance(hell, even most NPC can be problematic). It's not build for combat and I'm also not good at it.
Sometimes I get interdicted by players who talk to me, roleplay pirates and this is fun. I don't mind being robbed - I have a lot of credits.
Other times I'm just blown up in seconds. Just because. Somehow it's not that fun.

Current CG for example. I was collecting pods for some time (an hour maybe?) in open and upon returning to station (the only place you can sell mission cargo) I got interdicted and shot to pieces in about 5 seconds.
At this point I didn't felt like doing it again. At least not in open.
Today I switched to unarmed Hauler and flew for a while in Open in the same system where CG is. Got interdicted by one pirate (ok guy, although little inexperienced - interdicted me on my way to salvage collecting point, when my cargo hold was empty) and shot down three times without a word, once just outside station. I was flying crappy ship, no weapons. I was just target practice for some kids somewhere.
I'm sure it's fun for them, but for me not that much. If not for Solo, I might have just stop playing this game if instead of having fun I'm going to be working as fun content for others.

I play Elite in open only simply because I can get attacked by players.. I LOVE that!

nothing wrong wit it at all... any other mode is just boaring without the extra risk!

Yeah, I have absolutely no problem with how you play (according to your description). What has become known as 'salt farming' is obnoxious and divisive though.

Something I've said in many threads like these, is that if your playstyle requires others to play the victim, try to be entertaining so they'll want to be your victim again. Otherwise the logical conclusion is you'll end up bored & alone.

I don't start fights with other players but I'll try to be an engaging 'victim' if I am attacked. I won't CLog, I won't be insulting, and I'll try to provide a challenge as you will hopefully provide a challenge for me.

Oboy carousel topic! weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Can't you just high-wake? I only got obliterated because I was running shieldless. Even the smallest, weakest shields on a T9 should buy you enough time to shimmy outta there.

High waking doesn't make much sense when you have to make it to a specific destination, your only chance is to hope the 'baddies' are busy with another player (this does work). For the individual that is attacked a few times I can see why solo is so tempting.

I'm either not that fast, or I'm not doing it right. Once I got blown to pieces when leaving station in the middle of warming up for a jump. Seriously, not 5 seconds between start of unannounnced attack and me personally going interstellar.
