General / Off-Topic Best sweeties when you were a kid (or now what ever floats ya boat)

I've often wondered about that myself. I assumed that black jacks were an American sweet (candy).

Yes I was talking 240 pennies to the pound. Just didn't want to feel; that old.

Wrong attitude IMO. Being old(er) means that you/we have survived against terrible odds.

Here is another favourite from my childhood, Penny Dainties. Rectangles of hard toffee that only just fitted in your mouth. We used to hold one in the palm of your hand and smash it into the edge of a wall to break it in half.

And Coo Candy

Anything, anything at all, with sherbet. I was obsessed with sherbet. Don't give me any of your non-fizzy sweet nonsense, not in a world that has fizz.

(For Americans: just google it. No, it's not what you call sherbet.)

I vote for > Black Spangles.

edit Brown Spangles, forgot about 'em cola flavour jobbies.

ps when asked wifey said Opal Fruits or Fruitellas .

So Tj has started the never ending ‘is it a biscuit or cake’ Thread about Jaffa biscuits (guess my answer) which got me thinking of Viscount Mint biscuits (my all time fav) which got me thinking about my Nan, which got me thinking of calling round to see her as a kid and getting to visit the sweet drawer. My favourites were always

ORANGE CHEWITS.

second would be wham bars.
third would be a good olde sherbet dip.

Sweeties? We used to be given a piece of coal to suck on, and we thought we were lucky...

my infancy was a never ending orgy of sweetness. all sorts of cakes, bakery, chocolates, creams, sweets, commercial and homemade alike. summer and christmas specially were just nuts. tj has actually no blame in this, my granny and my aunt were the main instigators of this craze and they found enthusiastic support. it was mostly quality stuff, and we were fed healthy though in all other aspects. my 4 siblings still much enjoy sweet but i got saturated pretty soon. i still can appreciate the flavour, but i just don't want it any more, not taking in sweet for decades except for exceptional occasions twice a year where i might feel a sudden rush for something, that's it. i actually feel weird when i see other people eating sweet.

Activated charcoal tablets. Literally, coal.

Pacers, Spangles, treets were some that I remember from way back when crisp packets were the right colour.

Personally, I liked Black Jacks and Fruit salads, I could be wrong but im sure they were only half a pence each.

The other day my daughter let me try some of her Wham bar, I don't know what has happened there, but it's a shadow of what it used to be.

I really like these:

Those are thin strips of (caramelized?) fruit with sugar sprinkled. Pretty traditional here in Mexico.

Regarding more commercially available candies, I really like bubble gum and this:

Dip-Dab.... a little packet/envelope of sherbet powder that you dipped your wet sucked lollipop in for a renewable fizzy sugary coating.

Yum….. probably not.

It's only the dominance of Walkers that causs the crisp packet issue, pretty much every other company use the correct colours of green for cheese and onion and blue for salt and vinegar
