Phanton internals

Looking to find less travelled routes, I've been studying the live travel maps made by those elite maps people's, so contemplating North (humph, I Know) and 25 degrees East or West...

Well let me know mate, am definitely up for travelling somewhere, and I plan to be a hermit this winter (live north of England now). Last big trip was back in 2.1

I'm working away at the moment so cannot have a look at fitting a Phantom out just yet. But by the sounds of things, this might be my exploration ship/taxi in place of my long serving Asp Explorer.

Of the top of my head, my Asp sported 2 lightweight medium beams, 4D Enhanced low power shields, 6A Low emissions power plant, a couple of shield boosters, a wake scanner, 2 Tonnes of anti corrosion cargo racks, a Class 5 GFSD booster and all the usual exploration gear. This gave it a max jump range of about 65Ly and a regular range of 62.

It appears, from what people have said, that the Phantom will sport a better load out and still have a longer jump range. Does that sound about right?

Also does the Phantom have the same class FSD as the AspX?

Yes on both of those final questions, as well as being faster and more enjoyable to fly. :)

If you judge by the most common metric, jump range, and the factor in all the 'nice to haves', it definitely gets the best overall score. However, if jump range isn't critical (and it won't be unless you're planning on going to the outer edge of the galaxy), then sure, there are subjectively better ships, the Orca for example, in my opinion. It has adequate jump range and plenty of space now, plus it's faaaast and beautiful, and flies nicely.

Yes, the Orca is still my preferred choice. I'm not fussed about the loss of around 2-3 lys though I am just about to give the Krait Phantom the chance it deserves once I get into beat by just swapping out all the modules from my Orca.

Does it run a little cooler? Was surprised that my MKII runs so hot, although I guess most ships are cooking when they have a C5 GFSD booster

Haven't tried the phantom yet, nor guardian boosters. Maybe I'll go up a class of PP in my phantom builds, thanks for the heads up.

Thank you. Hmmm I don't normally keep old ships. I'm not sure if I want to make an exception for the Heaven's Reach, my Asp.

(Also cleaned up my post, now that I have finally got spell checking working on Firefox on my Surface Go!)

Good point about the fuel tank, can anyone confirm if it retains the 32 tonne tank from the MKII?

Edit - Cheers Aashenfox. Not too sure about it being the definitive explorer, but each to their own!

Yes, it still has 32t tank.

I moved my g5 dirty tuned engines from the mkII to the phantom, and found it ran about 10-15% cooler while fuel scooping. (Than the mk2)

Just managed to grab 5 mins onboard the Phantom in VR. All I can say is wow, didn't expect such a difference on the Bridge to the Krait. Definitely a keeper, the Mamba is amazing two, amazing work by the devs. The level of detail just keeps getting better.

Optional internals are:
Phantom: 6, 3x5; 3x3; 2
MkII: 2x6; 2x5; 4; 2x3; 2

Not entirely sure. I hoped for a smuggling/blockade runner capable of doing the 180t missions. But the cargo capacity of the Phantom is too low.

I'll try out how cold I can get the Phantom. Maybe it is a good smuggler without doing missions. It is fast and fun to fly.
I thought the beta Coriolis configuration was confirmed now? If so, it can carry exactly 180t with a size 3 shield fitted, and 188t shieldless (Although, if these are the final stats, it is a lot slower than I thought it would be initially, which makes running with such low defensive capability a lot less attractive).

188 tonnes is correct, way too low in my opinion, you basically have to sacrifice everything (and I don't care about shields etc on my mission runners) Definitely using the MKII for the serious M pad work, Phantom will be a nice ship for tootling around in, like a big Cobra.

My smuggling/ multi purpose Krait hauls 194 tonnes + has a C4, 2x C3 and a C2 slot to spare. Phantom, 188 tonnes, every slot in use.

I feel the Mamba will be the ship for that, even in combat fit it'll do 600, the nose should follow the front pretty well if it's based ont he FDL

My combat fit in beta is doing 569 boost, without hull reinforcements and with lightweight alloys. It appears Coriolis is a bit incorrect about characteristics.

This is what chaps my hide so much about the Mamba. I have three ships now that will boost well over that...and they have all been in game now for several years.

If this is a racing ship....shouldn't it, I don't know, go fast?

I get it...it's not a drag racing ship...and racing isn't all about speed; agility matters....but good grief, I have a Cobra MkIII that is faster than the Mamba. And a Viper MkIII. And an Eagle. And an Imperial Courier. And a.....

Mamba is pretty fast, but it's doesn't fly like an FDL.

Anyway, almost anything can canyon race, as long as you aren't trying to pull hairpin turns.

My fully armed and armored hybrid Mamba does 608 boost.

I have no idea how that is. Share the fit? I mean, I put the build in Coriolis and it does that, but in game it doesn't.

Nevermind, I figured out why. :)

Losing one hardpoint still gives it more dps capability than an FAS, which is one of the best medium combat ships in the game. It also has the same size fuel tank as the mk2. It's a great explorer, it's arguably the definitive explorer now, since the annie is a pig to fly in explorer fit.

Thanks @Aashenfox. A few have said that the fuel tank is smaller than the Mk II. From what you are saying it seems it is the same size as the MK II. Can you confirm this?

Would make a great explorer if it is
