Ships Challenger Owners Club

I reckon it's the most balanced of the Alliance C class ships as makes a decent Thargoid scout hunter (good hull and shields with plenty of weapon options), the other two are fine as well it's just that being "new" ships getting an optimised loadout/weapon array takes a bit more effort.

TBH I prefer the C class ships to the Krait for scout hunting as their weapon location has better convergence that you need to hit the elusive little bu**ers! ;)

TBF for tharg scouts I use my KB full laser setup... I can hunt and kill them all day long in that boat...

Having said that I can see it being a murder spree against scouts given the weapon loadout it can have. Still have to see if it's a better dropship though...

For lazy scout killing a FAS with 4 x AX MC turrets is rather good (apart from topping up the ammo), agreed the Keelie is another fine Scout killer likewise the much maligned Cobra 4 can tank up nicely with Guardian/AX weapons.

Those 7 hardpoints just are a statement,
it can either add up firepower, although the chieftain might be a bit
better at that, or be one flexible box of tools.
I love that.

It has ample internal slots for all sorts of tools,
is speedy while running cold and has a beautiful look.
It just is a ship i didn't count on, but fell in love with.

I went out goid hunting with some friends last night as was nicely surprised how the ship handles compared to the dropship which is what I'm contemplating replacing with it.

I have noticed though that with pure AX weapons (I don't have guardian one unlocked yet) the FDS is a bit better equipped.
e.g. FDS can have 3 AX mc's, 1 AX missile launcher and 1 remote flack for the swarms. But the Challenger has to forego the flack launcher if I want the same AX damage dealing as the FDS. It has 2 smalls which aren't as much use without guardian unlocks. Once I unlock the small gauss I'm sure it will be much more effective.

Remember that you can only fit 4 AX/Guardian weapons so although the small Gauss are less likely to toast your ship the DPS is limited, the few successful Cyclops kills I've had were using Guardian Shard cannons as multiple (3 - 4) class 2 Gauss caused nearly as much damage as the Goid! ;)

Damn I forgot about guardian weapons counting towards the 4 x limit.... .... Maybe the FDS is still better at dedicated cyclops hunting.... But man does the challenger dance!!

Anyone got a build set up with frags?
I've got the engineered hull parked at Ray Gateway, no weapons yet.
Any suggestions/builds regarding weapons?

Looks good but change out the resistance booster for another heavy duty as resistances mean squat against the goids.

I know most of my boosters are resistance based, however this FAS was thrown together with a sundry collection of engineered bits and bobs ;) it just happens to work really well against scouts, if you get lucky you can ram the little blighters too!

I've given the Challenger a go on Xbox.

Totally agree. Great vessel.

I'll be taking a Krait though because we all know I'm a trader at heart.*

*By trader I mean smuggler.

I am using mine por PVP in PC, with Thermal Biwave, quick charge shields, 2 resistence augmented shield boosters and 2 chaff launchers.

Military heavy duty armor, 2 size 3 module reinforcements, one size 2A interdictor and the modules left are all hull reinforment with heavy duty.
It gets about 4.064 hull with 40-45 % resistances more or less.

Regarding weapons, all size 2 and 3 weapons efficient plasmas with different effects (TL breacker and dispersal field), and in size one I have 2 long range rail guns (one feedback cascade and the other one superpenetrator) and one non guided missile launcher, augmented ammo capacity, MDD interrupt.

Believe me, this thing is very strong, handles very well, it reaches about 490 speed and it´s a nightmare to big ships specially if are fitted with assisted weapons.

Regards

finally I've been looking for a thread like this. I use mine for outright hunting pirates and in conflict zones though. I think it's great and underrated.

Does anyone else find it to be a good combatzone/pirate hunter or am i the only one?

Nope, you're surely not the only one!

Came from the Crusader, which I really wanted to love as a "free" Gunship alternative, but boy, only a C3 Fuel Scoop totally ruined that ship for me when I wanted to travel a mere 150ly, and jumped over to the Challenger. I like its bigger internals compared to the Chieftain for a tad more flexibility.

This is what I'm currently sporting (bar the Guardian FSD Booster, still gotta unlock that) and it's a lovely combat machine!

nice man. I bet that probably does good damage I just went with reinforced shields, heavy duty hull a a class 6 scb four efficient burst lasers and 3 small oc multicannons with grade 5. The military slots have just have unmodified module reinforcements and all the mods are grade 5, for the utility mounts I have three grade a shield boosters and one heatsink. Still need those dirty drives though. it's cool to find other people who actually like the ship and your build is creative. It sucks that the challenger seems like the black sheep of medium combat ships.

I just fiddled around a bit on Coriolis with the Chieftain and made a comparative build to my Challenger one:

Challenger:

Chieftain:
https://s.orbis.zone/-1-

And tbh, at least in my case the Chieftain seems superior, so I can partially understand the trash-talking about the Challenger now...

- Same damage against shields
- Superior damage against hull (against medium and large ships)
- Pretty much identical shields and hull
- Faster & better maneuverability
- Cheaper
- Higher Jumprange

Little faster, no more maneuverability, dramatically squishier, slightly better DPS with far worse hardpoint and internal flexibility. Gosh, it's almost like the ships are actually balanced or something.

That said, since this is FDev, what they should do to the Challenger is give it a second C3 hardpoint and bump the distributor up to C7 while leaving the rest of the stats alone, or improving the underlying stats to compensate for the extra weight so as the weight of the heavier equipment doesn't impact jump and handling performance from where it's at.

You are correct the chieftain has superior maneuverability as well as better jumprange but at the same time it's important to keep in mind that the two medium hardpoints due deal out slightly more dps than just one large which means you could do more hull damage only slightly but still it's still better and imo the maneuverability of the challenger is less but it's not so bad that I'm unable to maneuver around large ships and not just this but the extra class 6 slot being able to house an scb that can fully recover my shields is worth it to me. And as far armor is concerned the two class 3 internals on the challenger will offer more armor than the one class 4 chieftain provided they are both equipped with hull reinforcements. So to sum it up the challenger does have some edge over the chieftain at the sacrifice of maneuverability. Maybe it would be a good idea to upgrade both your chieftain and challenger with class a thrusters, then maybe you will find that although the challenger has less maneuverability it is still very workable.
