Combat Krait: MKII vs Phantom

So ... just finished converting my explorer Krait MkII for (PvE) combat: 3 beam lasers, 2 MultiCannon, 6C BiWeaves and the usual engineering stuff ... plus a bunch of Guardian Shield Reinforcements. Looks a lot like this:

Thinking was to pick up a Krait Phantom for exploring instead once the Q4 update drops. But I’ve now figured out I could kit out a Phantom with 2 large beams and a pair of medium Rails whilst still hitting the same sort of shield levels but it’s about 20m/s faster ... which is kinda tempting ...

I have pretty much all the modules ... would need to buy / engineer a 7A PP and an extra C3 beam laser but nothing that would take long.

So - folks with the Beta - which would you go for? Does the Phantom handle better/worse than the Krait for combat?

Both?
I haven't flown it but it's faster and more nimble by all reports.

For that MkII, you should add super conduits to your PD and corrosive to one of your MCs.
Cluster capacitors is a waste of your charge enhanced mod; it's directly counter productive.

Don't use SLFs?
Have you tried frags?

That's a very thermal biased loadout for the Phantom.

For the Krait and keeping with your theme, I would suggest putting long range thermal vent beams in the mediums, and something kinetic in the larges, probably OC frags.
Or perhaps PAs if you're comfortable with them

In the Phantom whatever you choose make sure you leverage those large hardpoints.
Efficient beams are not the best use of them imo.
PAs and frags come to mind again, and if you want beams put medium LR/thermal vent on there also.
You might even be able to downsize your PP if you're running large kinetics.

Lastly, you are giving up about 2000MJ in integrity, by using shield reinforcement instead of hull.
Seems like a poor trade-off to me.

Have to admit, I hadn’t factored in that the Rails are all thermal damage ... for some reason I was thinking they were a mix, like PAs? Except not Absolute damage. I do like PAs ... could be worth a go on the Phantom with the beams on the mediums instead. Or on the MkII instead of the MCs for that matter. In fact I think I’d prefer that - Large + 2 Medium lasers would strip shields a lot quicker and also still provide enough DPS for taking small ships out completely if I fail to land shots with the (fixed) PAs.

Take your point on Hull vs Shields but Hull doesn’t “grow back” whilst you pootle around scooping up whatever mats the NPC you just smoked dropped. TBH - at that level of shielding I’m not expecting anything in PvE land to get through ‘em unless I seriously mess up!! I do need to try engineering some resists into HRPs at some point, though.

I use PAs on mine and really enjoy it.
PAs just smash shields ftr.
Large frags work very well too since the DPS is so high it pretty much overpowers the resistances.
The total damage capacity is much better than most people realize too.

Rails I use mainly for the special effects; feedback cascade and super pen.
If you encounter a lot of Cutters or SCB heavy Condas/Vettes at least one feedback rail is very nice.
I also tend to use those as a long range weapon, but ymmv.
The "micro-gimbal" effect is more pronounced at range w/LR mod and it eliminates the damage falloff.

See above for the thermal/kinetic split.

Fair points and agreed.
Just "spitballing" some ideas at you.
Getting some reactive bulkheads would add a lot of integrity without sacrificing any slots.
You can use thermal/deep plating to keep with that theme, or use HD/deep on the reactives and add a small thermal/deep HRP, if you can give up an optional slot.

I'm just giddy about both of these ships!
lol

Coriolis shows slightly higher pitch and roll and that's the first time I've seen anyone claim that.
Everyone else seems to say it's more nimble.
Got screenshots or something?
The setups were not identical, but extremely similar. The exact weapon and optional internals were different, but mostly as expected with the MK2 having a fighter bay and the third large slot filled.

I haven't flown the Phantom in combat, but I've fought several of them at this point, and so far Mk II is a more formidable ship in a direct confrontation, mostly because of the SLF, but the extra hardpoint and toughness advantage cannot be ignored either.

Thanks!

That's pretty surprising with that mass/speed difference.
I was surprised too because according to third party sites it should have been different, but it wasn't.

Just by reducing the mass I expected to see some increase in agility, even a .01. But I couldn't get it.

Rotationals and translationals can be adjusted separately. Both ships at minimum thruster mass for drive with the same multiplier evidently have exactly the same rotationals, Frontier just gave the phantom a ~4% bump in translational velocity.

Both setups are already below minimum thruster mass. No speed or manuverability figures can get any better with that thruster module.
