How do you find material traders with specific, rare materials?

I'm not in front of the game, but from what I gather, not every trader has everything: not every Encoded Material Trader has every data-material, and what a material trader has in stock is based on the star system's economy (military, high tech, etc)

How do you find specific materials? I couldn't find any material-trader filters in the galaxy map.

You know how a lot of games provide you with the means to find what you need and where to get it within the game?

Well Elite isn't one of those :p

Ain't that the truth. Even when you have the galmap filter on, it ONLY shows you traders in systems you have previously visited. It does not tell you that on the filter, it's another random arbitrary design decision that does not make sense. Plus it adds to confusion.

And its even worse. The Galmap shows you only 'services' within 50ly even if you have been there before. So there might be the trader you are looking for two jumps away, but the game wont tell you because off... immersion? realism? the idea thats its fun gameplay to blindly hop around the bubble in hope that the next jump will show you what you are locking for?

So yeah, Inara-> Systems and Stations->Nearest

Edit: If you are running edmc, Inara knows your location. Then its really just two clicks and you have a list of whatever you are locking for, sorted by distance.

Do they all have infinite stocks of everything, though?

If, say, I have all my G5 mat's maxed-out, do traders always have enough G1, G2 & G3 mat's to allow me to trade G5 mat's to fill my stocks of lower-tier mat's?

Just wondering really.
Whenever I trade-down I just trade to get whatever I need right now.

Don't know - but yesterday I maxed the G1 stuff for heatsink synth (as I'd headed out exploring without doing that) with no issues.

Don't tell the 'infinite probes crew' or they'll start a campaign to make mat traders finite :(

That's why I pick up everything. Most of it I don't care about, but it's very useful for maxing similar or lower grade materials so I don't have to waste time collecting them. It's nice having a large controller on an Anaconda . [big grin]

It's scary how quickly, and comprehensively, you can run out of mat's when you're trying to engineer, say, 150-odd shield boosters at the same time.

There's also a bug where if you are miles away from a trader and put the filter on and then navigate to where they are in the galaxy map then they do not show up.

150?! You building a space house on a planet?!

150  Getting them ready for your squad carrier ;)

Nah,

A while back I decided it'd be a good idea to strip all the SBs off all my ships, transfer them to Didi Vatermann's and G5 them all.

That turned out to be a really, really bad idea and 6 months later most of my ships have their SBs re-fitted and I never want to visit Leesti again. :(

<<cough>> remote engineering <<cough>>

I'll get my coat :)
