I even had to lean back and check my bookcase to make sure mine were still in the correct order.

I've got the nice leatherbound, gold-leafed version. The fourth book is pure awesome. Changed Dire Straits for me forever.

Ah, I see it now. I ready the fourty two comment, then ignored the bottom bit because the large gap made me think it was just your signoff rather than part of the post.
 
The original planet descriptions also contained the word "hoopy" - a word taken from Hitchhikers, IIRC:

Galaxy 1, Anarlaqu:

"This world is mildly famous for its hoopy night life and its exotic night life. "
 
From what I can remember, Douglas Adams has met David Braben. And he told him he rather enjoyed Elite.
 
I remember in the late 70s listening to the series on radio.
Being a kid, I didn't know what to make of it.
Still don't.
