Who would sell their soul to actually live in the Elite Dangerous Universe (IRL)

I'll have to say no thank you - I live a comfortable life in a nanny state where the biggest threat to my life is (eventually) heart disease and old age and where I know whatever happens, there's a social safety net to catch me on the way down and let me recover.
Elite's dystopian universe, as much as it makes for good entertainment, is the complete opposite of that.

Couldn't convince my wife... yet! Wait, your wife/girlfriend has her own set of VR gear?

But... she would still just be a hologram with her real body being trapped in her own Sidewinder forever if that world was real.

Reality is just an illusion.. Ok, been watching way too many videos on Quantum field theory :-/

edit - I have a dual VR setup, CV1, DK2

nope sounds boring. in the elite universe the gods really do ignore you, and make stupid decisions and dont have the ballz to admit such, or even fix em.

I've been playing since the first day ED was available to the PS4. And though I've managed to switch ships a few times. I've been strapped into a seat, haven't moved anything buy my wrist, eaten, drank, change clothes, showered or gone potty since. Unless there is a video game available on my cockpits dash board. In which to escape the reality of never getting out of my seat, eating, drinking, going potty as I can do presently. I'd recon I'd have some serious health issues and wouldn't have to worry about being griefed.

Only if I'm immortal, and can change my appearance at will, and the broken economy didn't spiral out of control. :p

Although I would love the solitude of it all!

Of course, we're all immortal in the ED universe. And we can change our appearances at will. We can be male, female or something ambiguous. We're rich and have access to as many credits as we desire.

We just can't walk or go to planets with atmospheres.

This question must assume we are not invalids, clamped to our pilot seats. Even then.. this world is like being trapped in "Escape from New York" on a galactic scale. So, the easy respawn is a must before I would even consider living out my life in ED for realz.

Interesting.....

Im not talking about all the restrictions of the game like not being able to get out of the chair, eat, drink, s**t and do all the other stuff. Im on about being in real life but in the ED universe. Read some of the books like the one Kate Russell wrote on the lore and put yourself into that universe.

Imagine putting yourself into cryo sleep and waking up in 2000 years time into a universe where you can buy a small ship and make your fortune out there.

Hey cool. I have a DK2 and my wife has a CV1.

But I cannot get her to play ED. The only way to fly, she says, is in an atmosphere. Not gonna happen, I told her. Not anytime soon.

Regarding actually living in ED? I don't think so. Life is already screwed up enough.

Fly/land safe.

Imagine putting yourself into cryo sleep and waking up in 2000 years time into a universe...

Filled with hunger, slavery and destruction and nobody that cares for you..
I dont see any comments on the slavery subject because you all think you'll be pilots and more, but what if you wake up and you are a slave [woah] now what???

Free healthcare?

Would not sell my soul, but it would be interesting to live in the far future (3304). Life expectancy is much higher with better (bio)technology. Life would be pretty good in the Federation as long as you have money. I don't want to live in the Empire due to slavery, no democracy and the relative difficulty to move between the layers of society. With enough money I could buy a ship and travel to nearly anywhere across the galaxy.

Sure, but I don't want to be glued to my chair forever.

This is why we need Space Legs, Frontier.

If only it was so easy in real life to earn millions and billions.

But I would not want to live in the ED universe.
I have been dead several times already and ED does not have a narrative explaining the used resurrection mechanism.
So in the real ED universe I would have died and stayed dead in the first week I entered it, as there is no actual mechanism in place to revive me, or save me.

I have proposed a good resurrection mechanism several times, based on cloning, like in the Takeshi Kovacs novels. The mechanism used in those books would fit ED like a glove.

Why would I? It's full of murder, crime and slavery. The bodycount is in the millions daily. Property destruction and death can't be sustainable like that. The ED societies are about to collapse. The whole bubble is filled with failed states.

The bubble has conflicts and crime, but the majority of inhabited planets, moons and the established superpowers are stable. Controlling factions change, but there's no sign that the bubble is collapsing other than the Thargoid threat.

I would definetly consider if the option was available. Sure, it's not going to be easy living. but there are many more options in the future as to what one can do. And as others have mentioned, the availability of high-tech medical treatment etc. can make life relatively safe and comfortable for those not out in a ship.
