Visions

I just saw the (leaked) new trailer for No Man's Sky and all I have to say is wow. They keep adding new stuff to existing stuff to flesh the world out some more. What especially grabs me is all the new ground level additions. Is only Elite would adapt this 'vision' (badum-tss) then the surface of planets that we got when Horizons came out would have something to do. And no, not the flora and fauna, but the crashed ships and everything. Flying at 3km to wait for a blue circle isn't the best mechanic to find things..

Sounds great, if only this was the NMS forum …...

This is not a 'NMS is so great' thread, at all. This is a 'look what can be done, learn from this' thread. Surface in Elite is empty and dull and this shows what could be done.

NMS is planet based mostly, ED is space based. Two different models. I grew tired of NMS very quickly. I get tired off ED usually near spring when my bikes start calling me. Come winter again, its back to ED. Ive never re-installed NMS but I always pop back to ED and even during bike season, i will pop into ED to keep in touch. I dont think NMS engenders the same kind of dedication. Plus, Im not overly keen on the game model.

I doubt it. FD has always had a priority list on what to work on next. They can't work on everything at once. Besides, ED's terrain proc gen is really decent and uses a complete 64 bit modeling. And we're getting the new lighting with 3.3 There's plenty of interesting canyons and deserts out there on various ED worlds. Frontier did a great job with the look of the terrain and vegetation of JWE and structures of PC. FD will probably get back to significantly updating the ED terrain when atmospherics comes, no rush, nothing to "learn" and no shame cuz of NMS.

That is because the planets we can land on in ED are non-atmospheric. There will be no complex life on them. I will wait and see what happens when ED does get planets with life and compare then.

I really hope that they sort out the space side of things in NMS as at the moment its as deep as a toddlers paddling pool.

I said "And no, not the flora and fauna, but the crashed ships and everything". I know there won't be life. But.. never mind. Nobody reads. I'm out.

You do get crashed ships, but as we don't have space legs, we cant actually explore inside them yet. Looking forward to when we can though.

They're working on improved surface detail which they showed a bit at Lavecon this year.

I also prefer planets with lush forests and creatures. That should come when we can land on atmospheric worlds.

Land insode one of the atmosphereic biodome things. Plenty of trees and green stuff. Bit tricky though xD

The early horizons bug (crashed station) looked pretty epic. Would be nice to come across a crashed megaship or old station every now and then.

The thing is, you always find the same stuff on pretty much all the planets in NMS and I grew bored of it rather quickly. Still, nearly a 100 hours played, so I certainly got my money's worth out of it.

I just watched the trailer and I am very happy for the NMS crowd. They surely get considerable content updates. However I agree with others that NMS is more planet-based and most of the content updates are around stuff on planets (ground vehicles, base building, biomes, etc), so it is a really different approach than ED, where planetary exploration is (as you pointed out) finding stuff inside blue circles.

I like how in NMS I actually get a feel of the planet's environment, while in ED, I need to check the system map to have an idea of what the planet's temperature is.

Honestly, don't expect much planet content in ED any time soon. We got some Guardian/Thargoid structures, but other than that it was all just space-only stuff (6 ships + 3 SLF, 0 SRV)

Ah, NMS... that place I go when I’m not here.
It was a great game when it launched, and it just keeps getting better.
I’d love HOTAS support and have recommend it. The flight model isn’t terrible, though certainly far simpler than Elite, and I’m fine with that. I don’t want to need to be a starship pilot to fly.
A bit more precision, sure, but it can stay fairly basic and be fine.

And I don’t disagree - there are a number of Elements Elite would benefit from having their own versions of. Planetary navigation anyone? Destinations over a day away?
