I hired my first Harmless-ranked pilot today.

D
Mr Lyle Cannon. He's a reasonable bloke. Former medical transport pilot.

Anyway guys, being serious now. Will Lyle only get combat XP while deployed in a fighter, or does he merely have to be active on my role panel?

He'll blow up a lot, but ranks very fast. Well fastish compared to a hummie. I never checked on progress when not deployed.

He must be active ON BOARD your vessel to steal your combat XP (or gain his own), he does NOT need to be actually out in the fighter shootin' stuff.

Good luck Unik0rn, harmless crew are less useful than rolling down the window and throwing your ship's coffee maker at the enemy.

When they reach Master, they start getting decent, but dangerous is where they'll be able to handle the occasoinal eagle or sidewinder completely on their own. I've never got one to elite yet, but I hear they are VERY effective.

You should hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth when I lose an elite pilot. At the moment I've got an elite pilot, but I'm also training up another pilot as well, so that if there's any unfortunate incidences it won't be such a loss.

It's true that the harmless pilots are a bit... harmless, but always bear in mind you can swap from fighter to carrier free and easily.

In this case, i may be wrong. I might have to look into that though because I've had an active crew member tied up somewhere in the cargo bay for over a year and shes only 1 level higher than harmless. Must be doing something wrong! I apologise Mr Un1k0rn if i provided incorrect information!!

-EDIT- Now i REALLY do wonder why people complain about losing crew when you've only gotta have them actively reading playboy in the back somewhere :D.

Harmless crew btw usually die before they have finished saying the words "Fighter deployed commander".

He has to be getting kills, but he can fly the mothership, if you want to fly the fighter, and will probably rank up faster that way.

Really?

I could have sworn they actually needed to get kills to rank up.

Nope, my lowest rank pilot was 'Expert' when hired, I use her for distracting NPC's, she hasn't killed anyone, still ranking up. She's got a right cushy job working for me.

That's what I believe, I'll try to find a source. I MIGHT be wrong. I might even test it myself actually, I've been doing enough CZs lately. The method I shall use is this...

Each time I score a kill, I'll check my combat rank (I'm 40% dangerous, by the way). As soon as it goes to 41%, I'll assume I'm at at the base of 41%, even if it might be +something very small. Then I'll do enough kills (noting number and rank) without even having a fighter bay, to get me to 42%. Then I'll repeat with fighter and crew on board but not flying and see what happens.

Well, I guess their effectiveness depends on what you're doing.

When mining for Selene Jean in a T10, I was Mostly Harmless with a Harmless copilot. At first I broke off mining whenever I was attacked, and kept moving too far away from the asteroid, so eventually I leaned to just sit there and let my turrets and SLF deal with them while I carried on collecting. Quite often a pirate would zoom past me, eat some turret fire, zoom off into the distance, and get chased down and blown up by the SLF.

Perhaps if the mothership is just sitting there, the attacker's movements are more predictable, making it easier for the SLF? Or maybe the SLF just made a bigger contribution because I was making a lesser one.

I got up to Novice, she passed me and is halfway through Expert now.

Now all they need to do is reduce the payout for inactive crew to 0-1%, allow us to only pay active crew at most +1% per rank of our total income, and stop the crew from reducing our combat rank gain by more than half!

Also, give us +2 Inactive slots, and allow for a max number of Active NPC pilots as you have crew slots on your ship. Maybe even give them some upgraded AI so they can actually do other multicrew functions (like use turrets/scanners, etc)

Just shows how Ludicrous Cmdr payouts are. Also why I fail to see how anyone except newbies struggle to make money in this game.

Agreed, i don't get the complaints about money. I couldn't believe how quick i could hop in an Annie or a Cutter. Even without roads to riches, board flipping or bugs. Casually pull 15-20 mil in from my Cutter just doing some deliveries from a max rep system without even trying :/.

Well im glad this is turning into a debate rather than me just being the only uninformed one :D.

Yes, I apologise for implying that you were outright wrong, I'm no longer 100% sure of that. I was, before someone who I consider to know more than I, questioned it, and now I'm questioning everything I've ever believed! Is Brexit actually the right thing to do after all?
