Phantom Vs DBX (taxi) - no contest!

The Phantom beats the DBX hands down as a uber all purpose bubble taxi ship.

The Phantom stripped down jump range for me is 68ly, one less than my old faithful DBX.

For this I gain...

32 tons cargo,
Faster top and boost speed,
All the utility scanners,
Collector limpets,
The list goes on...

Anyone see any down sides?

Also how does this ship manage to out boost a DBX with equivalent 4D thrusters?

They are recycled GE J79's stripped from *real* Phantoms... :)

Since when was it implied that an exploration ship is a space-uber?

Not to give the wrong impression, but no duh the DBX is worse at being a taxi than a ship significantly larger and much more capable of fulfilling more roles than just a focus on one alone

Well it's a pretty cool ship no matter. If I could get one I'd probably spend a fair amount of time in it too.

Yes, for me it's become my number one, all purpose non combat getting about ship, 68ly with all that functionality, it's kind of made the update for me.

Does price matter in a game where a newb can earn a billion credits in a day simply by making a few friends?

Not even one tiny itty bitty bit.

I will buy a phantom and use it but the DBX and DBS are fine ships will keep using for general run about things and planet landing. I dont find mooar slots to be compelling enough to retire 2 of my favorite ships

It's the ship I spend most of my time in, I was hoping that wasn't going to be a Hauler!

I have a Hauler but it's not a bubble taxi. I set it up to be my dedicated surface prospector ship. Seems just about perfect for that role. Hopefully they will get ya some really nice paint jobs for that Phantom soon. I'm not much of a fan of the default colors of ships so I change that as soon as I can.

Probably not if you play to get credits. Not really what I do so I have to budget and plan for everything. I've been working for weeks to make enough to upgrade my T6 and I'm slowly getting there. I role play in my little cluster of stars to keep my home system supplied with the goods they need. It's nothing for me to haul badly needed clothing or medicine to a station in my system and make maybe 2000 or so credits. So, a ship the cost of a Phantom is wayyyy out of my budget. My way of playing ED ins't for everyone I'm sure but it keeps me interested and involved in my home system and the survival of it's citizens.

Lol, price, ofc. And DBX jumps 60+ly which is quite sufficient for most tasks, even without Guardian stuff.

The reason why I chose DBX over AspX and other ships a long time ago was simply cost. Krait Phantom will never even come close to that.

Yep. I remember a time when smoking was still ok, and the Phantom was good at it. In fact, it was her trademark sig ;)

Plus, I remember a training furball fight directly over our (camouflaged) SAM site between a German F-4 and a Dutch F-16, and that will ever be among my service memories. It was impressive to watch, blue skies on a summer morning in '88. Ofc the Falcon won (for it is much more capable) but the Phantom pilot did really well, too. It was so close over ground and directly above me so that you could see the decals and pilots and all. We didn't fire a missile, though.

My first bird was an F-4D, then I transitioned to the F-16A.

In a close-in knife fight, the Viper has the advantage. BVR, the F-4D has a chance, if it can avoid the F-Pole, and S-Pole problems. Plus, another set of eyeballs. And *two* engines....

Being trapped in a washing machine for many, many jumps....

Purely for use as a taxi, spending Cr100m on a ship that replaces a Cr10m DBX or a Cr500k Hauler seems a bit excessive.
Hopping around the bubble, you're probably going to save yourself a single jump, at best.

Sure, you can build the Phantom into a nice multirole but then you're eating into it's jump-range and it's not actually a "taxi" any more.

Also, I dunno if you could park a Phantom here.
