Why can't I find any cobra MKIV ships- I have Horizons

I just hope that sometime in future releases they'll give us a ship of similar construction or modify an existing one to be close.
There are already close alternatives to the Cobra Mk IV, and even better ships available.

When the Cobra MkIV was originally released it was panned quite vocally by some that had access to it. That situation is far from unusual for new ships in ED though given the track record of the past couple of years since Horizon's release.

Mining would be the reason to get one for me as I only fly small and medium size ships with the T6 being the only medium size one I have. I could probably convince myself to get a Keelback if the T6 just becomes too clumsy for the mining role.

May I ask if you use it at all now, after all the changes since then?
.
With the upcoming changes to mining, i for the first time since a loooong time might find limited use for the Cobra MK IV. Mine is still in the configuration i gave it ages ago: carrying several dumbfire missile launchers for ground attack. But the method it was set up for was nerfed into oblivion well over a year ago. I just was unable to find any new purpose for that ship since then. Now with the mining changes, there is at least some chance that the Cobra MI IV might be of limited use again.
.
So all in all, for the collector who wants to own all ships, the Cobra MK IV is a sore spot. For everybody else, there's alternatives available, even at similar price range. You just might have to use a medium landing pad instead of a small one. But as "small pad" is not an inherent advantage in the game, it doesn't really matter. (Agility matters, but the Cobra MK IV is slower and less agile than a number of medium size ships. )
.

You should consider yourself lucky OP. I have to remember from time to time, when i m at a station, that this pathetic excuse of a ship exists.
I think it might be even worse than the asp scout lol.

Obviously there was, or it wouldn't have been so fashionable.

More to OP's point, they can have as many of one type of ship as they can buy, for whatever the hell purpose they want. IDT there's a max fleet limit, just a limit per station for parking them, for which I don't recall the max number.

correction, someone said 35, when I thought 30

I'd give my eye teeth for a Cobra Mk IV but since I didn't know ED even existed back when you could be an early adopter then I'm sure it will never happen... unless they relax that restriction sometime in the future. Again, probably will never happen. I just hope that sometime in future releases they'll give us a ship of similar construction or modify an existing one to be close. That Cobra Mk IV would make a dandy mining ship. I'm building a T6 to use as a mining ship but the two small hardpoints are gonna be the bottleneck I'm sure. Bumping those small ones up to a medium size would make me a very happy camper. Or, add engineering to mining lasers to give them a little extra oompf so the small ones can be more useful.

The Cobra 4 is a dandy little miner. It's the poor version of the Python. Now, with all the need for utilities, it's going to lose that.

I have access to the Cobra MKIV but I've never bought it or flown it, because I can see from the stats that it is junk, just like the Viper MKIV. From what I remember these versions trade off agility for better tank, but that doesn't really work well for these small ships since it is better to avoid damage than to try and tank it. Medium and large ships are are going to eat that tiny bit of tank alive, and you'd wish you had the better mobility of the MKIIIs. Both MKIV ships are a disappointment.

Never underestimate the benefits achieved by engineering ;)

Op- at the risk of opening old wounds, there are excellent reasons why the Cobra IV hasn't been given a general release. I'm genuinely sorry that you don't have access to it, but there's a bit of history to the wee red beastie. See below.

IIRC the MkIV was a perk of being a kickstarter backer. The irony is everyone (well most) think/thought it was a hunk of junk. I believe beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I bought Horizons and I still want one. Not gunna happen. Went through the five stages of grief a few times.

Again, although you have my sympathy, FD have rock solid reasons for restricting the availability of the model.

Unfortunately, if you did not purchase Horizons before:

- 5th February 2016 on PC
- 30th July 2016 on XBox

You won’t be able to purchase a Cobra MK IV.

If you are a PS4 Commander, then is no way to buy the ship.

We (PS4 community) keep chasing sporadically on this (currently 28 page) thread : https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/314330-Will-PS4-get-the-Cobra-Mk-IV
And have been given various assurances such as:

And latterly

...but it hasn’t arrived yet.

I understand why the PS4 community feel aggrieved, but I also understand why FD have made the decision they did.

There's a great amount of player entitlement on both sides of the debate over whether the C IV should be given a general release. Frontier could have avoided much of the subsequent drama when they first designed the model, but they're learning about the customer base, just as we're learning about the company. They haven't repeated their error since, so clearly they've taken something from the debacle.

History lesson: at a time when the company was buoyant financially, but looking to maintain their momentum, they prepared to release a game expansion. It had many features, the one we're discussing was a loyalty reward. A thing of value was offered to generous customers who had backed the game thus far, if they were willing to make an additional purchase. That thing of value was an exclusive, only available for a limited period.
The thing they chose was an unlock to an entirely unique ship, a one time, never to be repeated event rewarding previous loyalty, current purchase and hopefully, via the goodwill nurtured, future custom.
Such events aren't unusual in the gaming world- I have virtual garages chockablock with unique vehicles and kit that will never be sold again in various other titles. FD weren't doing anything new or novel.

The kick back against the reward was unexpected. Instead of seeing the owner of the C IV as part of the reason new players even have a game to purchase, there was considerable resentment voiced against the owners. That was reciprocated, as owners had their gift from FD tarnished and their character questioned on game boards. The reason they had a C IV to fly was ignored, while anything less than full support for a general release inevitably led to personal slurs and imputations made against their supposed morality and comportment.

FD haven't offered anything similar since. It makes for a quieter life.

If you are a new player to ED, or you only purchased the game when it became available on PS 4, you have my sympathy. It's irksome to have a thing that holds considerable value withheld from you. But as FD are unlikely to change their stance, it's going to have to be up to you how you deal with the situation.
Personally, I'd try and cultivate some gratitude toward the early adopters who allowed the game to be developed in the first place. If they hadn't done the things that earned that ship, FD might have pulled the plug on the whole project. There were numerous potential failure points on the development journey, all traversed with customer funding. Instead of lusting after a thing you can't have, try to appreciate all the things you do have and the people who made that possible. That includes the budget needed to port the game to Playstation!

I thought the same as well, but as a core miner, it shines like no other small ship.

Yep, as has been pointed out, the cobra 4 was something of an exclusive, but not just limited to kickstarters, backers, LEPers, or other self-important groups.
It was time-limited, and you had to purchase Horizons on the PC before February 5, 2016, or on the XBox before July 30, 2016.
PS4 players, you were just plain screwed from the word go.

I missed the deadline myself, but from what I've learned, you're really not missing much. It's something of a polished turd anyways.

Ok FDev, how much cash money will it take for me to get a Cobra MkIV? I'll even sign a non-disclosure statement promising I'll never tell anyone that I have one and if I do you can take it away, plus I'll pay the credits required for ship purchase and buy a new paint job for it. Take my money please.... Think this will work?

You can own as many ships as you can afford; for example at one time it was highly fashionable to use Sidewinders as map bookmarks.

I still have some sidewinders from the bookmark days. I should just sell them I guess; most of them are long-obsolete moneymaking metas that don't work anymore.

I just read red beastie and remember that somewhere in the beginning it usually was displayed in this color. Since I never used it in all the years but recently bought one to try some core mining, I can say mine is just grey and there's no red skin available. And I'm sure back in the days it was deep plain red, not just some reddish skin what I could have now. Does anyone know the history for it or why mine is just grey now?

No clue why it's grey now, it was blood red on issue. :S

:D You've won me over!
Sadly FD don't see it that way.
It's an issue of trust and integrity to them now. They have to show the plebiscite that their word can be trusted- if they say something definitive, they have to be seen to act on that commitment. If they do so, then their future intentions will be trusted. ED won't ever be seen as a new game again. Much of their business has to be conducted with existing customers. So far, in my opinion, they've been entirely straightforward and honest in their dealings with the player base. We/I might not like their decisions, but they're up front about them and compared to many in the industry they're an absolute pillar of respectability.

@ OP, I don't think you're missing out on anything anyway.

I'm not sure if that helps, mate. The OP might just think you're covering up just how good the C IV is! Trying to stave off the nerf bat that always hits anything gamers perceive as ptw takes a lot of work and constant vigilance... ;)

I have one OP, it’s not a good ship at all though to be honest, with the outside exception of niche mining and maybe novelty small ship hull tanking. (as mentioned before though it’s still better than the Asp Scout!)

IMO it should definitely become accessible to all soon, more ships being available is always a good thing, exclusive cosmetics is one thing but a whole ship is rather petty to want to keep exclusive. (Maybe even give an exclusive cobra IV skin to those who had access to the Cobra IV before it goes public?)

An interesting thought, but I'd prefer a skin for a useful ship. No amount of paint and polish can make a Cobra IV as good as the Cobra III.
