Like the X games, when a character gets you on Comms you can see them, I think it would be absolutely hilarious to have a player pop up on a cam panel in comms whilst demanding cargo etc.
I personally would keep a Darth Vader mask @ the ready for such occasions.

So who would like a low res cam support for comms and if so why and if not why not ?

What I'd really like to see is a little window depicting the head of the enemy player's character, not so much the actual player, during voice chat, but actual video comms with camera support in-game would be a cool feature that I wouldn't use. So long as there isn't some networking problem that would render that a no-go, I see no problems with including it.

Sorry big no. Two reasons : it would be completely immersion breaking to see some dude with a tee shirt (if you're lucky) playing in his bedroom/man-cave when you're trying to imagine you're a space pilot in his ship. And two : unnecessary waste of bandwidth for FD.

When they come up with a character creation tool for the out of ship parts of the game I think having it used as a pop up avatar in coms would be cool. Even if it wasn't lip synced etc.

Realtime lipsync is possible with some libraries, but you do need a dedicated camera still. I'd like to at least have the avatar image for recognition pop up anyway :)

It would be cool if the game could turn a screencap of your character's head (Taken at the end of character creation) into one of those old-fashioned character portraits that you would see in things like the codec system of Metal Gear Solid and it's predecessors Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, just without the mouth flapping.

I've no interest in seeing what a player looks like, but the avatar - maybe. Anything that gives a bit of bling to the comms would be good. I did always like the X series popup comms viewer, it added context and interest to a solo game.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.

I believe that's the plan for Star Citizen anyway - have a in-game avatar that lip syncs to you as you speak. Pretty neat stuff if it works. :)

I'd like to see something like that in Elite, too, actually. It would keep 'video' comms entirely in-universe anyway.

As with all of this kind of stuff, it would be an option of course. You wouldn't have to use it if you don't want to.

you could have the ability to reject or accept visual communication :)
I did wonder about bandwidth issues.

When and if 3D avatars are implemented, possibly for the walking outside the ship expansions, a chat windows with the 3D avatar will be a very nice addition. But webcam implementation, no way.

don't want.

1) i don't even want voice chat
2) even more bandwidth on P2P connection
3) we don't even have a working text chat yet...
