There's a flipside to that coin.... When people bought into Horizons they didn't actually know what they were getting. All that was shown was a roadmap filled with nice words like crafting and crew features. No one knew they will turn out to be RNGineers and multipew. Or we could go even further back to the Beta stage, where no one knew what will actually be in the game at launch.
Does anyone even remember the discussions we were having on this forum about how E: D 1.0 will contain all of the features from the DDF, and that FDEV are just keeping them "a secret" for the "surprise"? And FDEV keeping silent the whole time?
So yeah, when people paid for Horizons or the whole LEP or whatever, they had no idea what they were getting. True and true. But bottom line is that they paid for it. E: D is not free to play, end of story.
Aye same, one that really struck a nerve for me was Braben doing an interview proudly talking about ED's success being because of Frontier's loyal following and because updates have been free with a revenue through microtransactions model.
It was a bit galling to hear, you're like, yeah your most loyal followers paid up front for those free expansions.
When I read that it was obvious that Frontier/Braben give the LEP no thought whatsoever, that it just doesn't factor into any equation for Frontier.
And I think it coincided with people starting asking questions so I don't think it was just me.
It’s good value per hour for sure. Shame about all the misleading pie in the sky videos from frontier back in the early days by Lord Braben. The games not even close to what he was selling it as back then even now, so people having unrealistic expectations is down to them. Not it’s customers.
Except you didnt pay for it. When you paid for it you had no idea you would get this too, and a lot of it doesnt even require Horizons.
Yes we did, where else did FD get their funds?
How do you know if someone is an LEP owner?
They'll tell you.

I honestly cannot understand why some people mention beyond as free content, meaning that Frontier is such a nice company that gives away free stuff to them, because they have nice hearts.
Its like somebody buys a brand new car, pays the full price up front, goes away with the car only to discover that the back seats are missing. After one year the company makes an announcement that "whoever bought that specific model, gets a pair of back seats for free", and the customer takes the seats and also is thanking the company in every chance for the "free" seats. I mean... Jesus Christ.
Let me tell you this. The company is not a bunch of guys that run a charity program, quite the opposite. If they could, they WOULD CHARGE BEYOND FULL PRICE. We get to receive it for "free" because it is a bunch of fixes to repair that first year version of horizons. And it is still a minimum of repairs if we take a look in the wreck that is called multi-crew and we are now stuck with.
So if Beyond is indeed free, then it should also be given free to base game owners. What did you say? That cant happen because beyond is based on horizons? Well how about that now? Does is ring a bell?
Beyond probably was funded with Jurassic World and Planet Coaster and DBOBE selling part of his shares. Anyway, that's not how it works. If you don't know about something you can't pay for it.
Unless FD have a track of each and every dollar that has been earned, it's daft to conclude so, besides, those two got funding from ED.
On the subject of knowing, when you buy ED you buy all of it's updates unless they are DLCs, what might be contained in those updates is as relevant as the non-spoiled ending of any game.
You didn't pay for it, Frontier paid for it.
What you paid for is Horizons if you have that.
Which makes all updates free. QED.
haha][haha][haha] Go tell that to somebody that doesn't own ED.
Actually large parts of Beyond are given for free to base game owners, you don't have a point.
Maybe give LEP owners free keys to JWE, since that's where the money probably went at the time.
I am pretty sure that I didn't say that ED is free.
How do you know if someone is an LEP owner?
They'll tell you.
Oh again you said "for free"? Meaning that there was an option to charge the base game owners for fixes and they decided to not to? I must be a really bad guy then.
From what i wrote, you only saw the last paragraph?
Which makes the updates free.Once more, when you buy ED you also buy its updates
Beyond conists of more than bug fixes.
