Don't think this old commander will make Elite again.

You can have mine if you like, I'm doing nothing with it.

Retired at 50, all the time in the world (maybe), I never know what day of the week it is, or what time it is. I don't have any pressing engagements apart from taking my dogs out twice a day.

There are however some down sides...

That's where I'm at, single, retired at 55 from building 747's, with a grumpy old cat and all the time in the world to play. I sleep when I'm tired and get up when I want...what day is it?:D

With three youngsters under 7 the only chance I get to fire up elite is generally when everyone's in bed.
Saying that with this only being beta I'm only dipping in and out as I don't want to get too comfy before release, that and really wanting to experience elite with a CV1... :D

I think I am the Oldest E:D fan here 1972 actually
You think? If 1972 is the year you were born - try 1953, the year I and my husband (Wrongway) were born. You are still a youngster. :p

We're also retired but finding there are never enough hours in a day to do all that we want to! How did we find the time to work? :)

you need one of these :)

Early retirement is the best decision I ever made in recent years, am looking forward to dark dismal winter days to stay indoors and play ED

1956 vintage, made highly dangerous once, but severely restricted access as playing on the TV in the living room  , need to get my man cave sorted

Yes there is something to be said about being retired, as I sit here typing before turning my attention to real life and firing up my ship ready for another days work :D

1960 for me.
I started school with Lsd and a slide rule (thats old money, pounds, shillings and pence, for you youngsters. Look it up and then try to convert some of todays prices!)...(and I still have my old slide rule! although I hardly use it anymore:p)

I've seen England win the world cup and man walking on the moon. I'll never get to the ISS but here I am exploring the galaxy looking for more incredible sights.

Thank you developers of all of the Elite incarnations. :D

1970 here - that was pre-decimalisation too (but the only old money I handled was in xmas puds)

I catch an hour or two max per night and am also in front on a screen all day too :(

To quote Good Omens;
“NOTE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AND AMERICANS: One shilling = Five Pee. It helps to understand the antique finances of the Witchfinder Army if you know the original British monetary system:

Two Farthings = One Ha’penny. Two ha’pennies = One Penny. Three Pennies = A Thrupenny Bit. Two Thrupences = A Sixpence. Two Sixpences = One Shilling, or Bob. Two Bob = A Florin. One Florin and One Sixpence = Half a Crown. Four Half Crowns = Ten Bob Note. Two Ten Bob Notes = One Pound (or 240 pennies). One Pound and One Shilling = One Guinea.

The British resisted decimalised currency for a long time because they thought it was too complicated.”

:D

Bahaha..

I have to take a break after an hour or two. I think it's the orange. It's driving me insane!!! arghhhh!!!

I dont last more than two hours before I hang up the headphones and pack the other gear away.

My main struggle is actually the ship engine noise - which to start with is great but for me is a little too much to bear for extended periods.

Maybe another minor add on at some point in the game would be to have cheap ships with noisy engines that are loud and overbearing and the more expensive small ships to have some decent sound dampening built in so you can still hear the engine but not be overwhelmed by the noise of it.

Larger ships may have most of engine sound drowned out.

That leaves the possibility of flying through space in a degree of quiet with the occasional ship instrument noise to keep you company and of course the music! :)

That's my idea of deeper immersion...subtle noises are better than in your face noises. There's a time and place for loud noises but, imho, it shouldn't be the norm.

Thoughts?

Only get 1-2 hours a few nights a week.

But will be playing this game for at LEAST the next 5+ years ...so will definitely make Elite.
I mean at a minimum, we are all going to be playing till they've released the planets and EVA content and until we are sick of that as well right?
....don't think Elite rankings will be a problem :)

Nice to meet you dd_crash, nice to know I am not the oldest guy back in the saddle. I'm a Jan 54 model. Of course being such an old git, I remember dipping my head into a bowl of water to try and pick farthings up with my teeth on Duck Apple night as we used to call it. I know its also a celebration that is held in the USA but I cannot remember what name they call it.

But seriously Elite fires my imagination every bit as much as it did when I took out my Cobra Mk III for my first flight 30 years ago. Kinda wish I had been 15 at the time and not 30, then I might have still been here if they do Elite Mk 3 30 years in the future. People will probably have an ultra lightweight dome on their head, a bit like a diving helmet, where the most amazing wrap all the way around graphics will make your brain feel like it really is living that life.

Ahhhh, dream on DarkMere, I was born 300 years too soon :D

1970 here, and I know that's not even close. There's a guy on the EightyFours thread who's 71. I hope when I hit my 7th decade I'm still capable of working a stick. (Hey, none of that! You know what I mean.)

In the mean time, I just had to get my first set of reading glasses, I'm already having to ask people to repeat themselves, and I can't remember why I walked into the room sometimes.

But I have Elite! So I got that goin' for me, which is nice. :D

Did you try the eagle (~16000cr)? It has the smoother sounding engine (also a bit faster to the expense of a slightly shorter jump range).

I'm 58 btw. and it's great being an old fart but feeling like a youngster under so many even older farts!

p.s.: We urgently need some geriatric space ships! :D

That's why I love the Type-9...it doesn't do anything in a hurry, it doesn't worry about squashing the occasional NPC who just HAS to exit before you do, and it has a really nice diesel-electric locomotive rumble...plus it will make you really filthy rich:D
