Poor man's VR. Anyone else out there?

VR is the only reason I still play this game.

I think there are those who don't know how to improve their image quality or have hardware that is too weak to have acceptable image quality.

With my 1080ti things looked great and ran great at 1.3 super sampling. Now with a 2080 ti thinks are even better at 1.7 ss everything maxed.

I disagree. A well configured head tracking device coupled with an imaginative mind leads to what I consider "immersion". The controlling aspect isn't much more than a convenient icing on the cake to me. VR is more like a crook for all those who lack this sort of imagination.

lol, why stop there? yeah, the game and all the hardware you run it on are just a crook for your lacking imagination if you can't immerse yourself in a vivid galaxy in the future by simply reading a book.

actually, with imagination you shouldn't even need the book. it's all already in your mind.

I've tried Vive and Oculus Rift CV1 (and still have a DK2) but find that VR just isn't quite there yet.

So now I just rock a curved ultrawide with X52 HOTAS and a Trackhat Clip Plus. Only just started using headtracking and it's just amazing. VR is good and all but the resolution of 3440x1440 is so much nicer to look at especially for reading text.

I'll reconsider VR when it's better but until then, I'm happy with my setup.

I use Track IR and it's excellent, couldn't go back to flying without it. Just takes some calibration to get the response to your liking. Looking forward to having a VR rig someday but Track IR is definitely good enough for me until then!

Has anyone tried using "basically completely free" headtracking? https://github.com/opentrack/opentrack/wiki/Smartphone-Headtracking - this looks quite accessible, I have an old phone and plenty of girls' headbands to attach it...

I did. It does what it is supposed to do. I can not get used to stretching my neck and wearing things on my head.
And it is too sensitive, You will not believe how much head moves even if You hold it still on the chair.

Facetrack Noir works very good, there good profiles somewhere in the forum (dig for Elite Dangerous software version).

Now, I am trying Camera Mouse 2018 (free software). It uses head tracking but with a single point of reference so very small movements of the head
will result in precise movement of the pointer. I am surprised with the precision and improvement since the last version (sensitivity settings - medium, medium, very low). Other free software that I could find are not so good.

I have half-finished DIY track-IR (2 Euro parts cost), very good but still head to one side and eyes to the screen is not for me).

One more note: I am a modest man, Elite in Anaglyph 3D mode is epic!
But I have have sub-optimal notebook to handle it normally, otherwise there would be no second thought how to play.

As someone who wasn't that impressed with the original vive and rift I recommend that folk check out the windows mixed reality headsets. The resolution jump to 1440 per eye was the game changer for me. Text and graphics are clear and it looks good (imo) on medium graphics cards, I started with a 970 and the Lenovo explorer.

It's particularly good just now when with black Friday deals the Explorer, and other WMR headsets, can be had for £150, or (or less $).
If you have the money they're well worth a look.

Otherwise I can highly recommend. ED Tracker, inside out tracking is great and much cheaper than trackir etc.

@Exoforce, you know your stuff, some good options there o7

I've just ordered the ED Tracker Pro (not the wireless one) on the strength of this thread so if it turns out to be a pile of pants then I HATE YOU ALL!

Otherwis, Merry Christmas Everyone!

Update to my post from yesterday. I setup opentrack on my linux box using an old galaxy nexus strapped to my headset. After a bit of fiddling, wine passed the fake joystick through to ED fine, and I now have head tracking working! It's surprisingly awesome :D

If you have a spare (old?) smart phone and a few minutes, it's well worth the time to setup and at least sample the awesomeness of head tracking... (https://github.com/opentrack/opentrack/wiki/Smartphone-Headtracking)

Head trackers are not "poor mans VR" - they are not even VR or even close to being VR. I'm not sure what this thread is doing in the VR sub forum to be honest, other than the threads (incorrect) title it has nothing to do with VR.

I believe it was moved here by one of the mods. Because it has people discussing ... VR. In addition to headtracking.

Make the VR Sub-Forum Great Again! Can you actually fit MVRSFGA on a ball cap?

Head tracking and support for 3D displays (on PS4!!) would be awesome. VR sounds cool but is a bit too full-on for day-2-day gaming for me.

For the most part it has people discussing head tracking on 2D display technology. It has some people discussing VR only because of the thread title, which really has nothing to do with VR based on the fact that head tracking alone does not equate to a VR experience or anything which is remotely comparable.

Is there a head-tracking with a sprinkle of VR forum? I'm sure the mods could move it there.

I'm going to buy an EDtracker pro in a few days, hopefully.

I'm right in thinking I have to Velcro the unit to my headset or hat?

Yes, the pro has one of those little sticky pads included in the package so you can attach it to the top or side of your headphones or hat. You can orient it any way you need to, and then in the calibration you tell the software how the unit is oriented upside down/left/right etc so it calibrates correctly. I used a big plastic clip from a DIY store myself rather than sticking it on semi-permanently.

The headphones I use have quite a narrow headband which isn't totally flat so get time the Velcro worked loose. A hair bobble thing works much better and really completes the look.

Would that mean I could mount it on the sticky-out bit on my baseball cap then?
